Who replaces Bud Selig
So this shouldn't be bugging me so much since we all know that Bud is part cybernetic organism, and will live until 2351 (long enough for the frozen head of Richard Nixon to resume the office of the presidency), but assuming a tragedy occurs or medical science has it in for former used car salesmen, who takes the reigns after Senor Selig? I'd always hoped that Bob Costas or Peter Gammons would take the job, but as Bud gets older (he's 75 right now), I don't see either of them reaching for the job. If Jorge Bush hadn't completed turked the country like a syphilitic bear he might have been an option, so after those 3, the choices aren't jumping off the page. So who do you think? Cal Ripken? Would he want it? Tony Gwynn's fat and not pasty white so he'd probably not be a top choice by the owners. Nolan Ryan seems happy to run the Rangers. I can't see an agent or a GM sliding into the spot, and what owner would want the job?

I would support this fully
but there’s no way he’s going to transition to that job at his age. Bud was 55 when he got the job, and he’s not leaving it anytime soon. Miller is 58 right now and I would guess that he won’t want to leave broadcasting anytime soon.

If he wasn’t so old I would say Frank Robinson.
It really should not be a current or former owner IMO. So that leaves out George Bush. I actually think he might have done well in that role. He always sounds at his highest level of intelligence when talking about baseball.
I’m not really aware of anyone out there who has a keen business sense and who also has a passion for the game of baseball though. Kinda sucks it can’t be someone like Mark Cuban, things would at least be interesting.

I’m honestly offended you would even suggest Bob Costas. Bob Costas is the biggest douchebag piece of shit on the face of this earth (well, maybe not, but he’s at least up there). What would ever make you consider that dickhead?
If you’re trying to seriously discuss the issue, I think we all need to realize what a commissioner does and what qualities you’re looking for in the new one. The commissioner is basically the CEO of a large corportation – it’s very much a business job. It has nothing to do with evaluating baseball talent. It has nothing to do with being media friendly. It has everything to do with large scale labor negotiations, contract negotiations with all of MLB’s partners, dealing with all the issues the players and, more importantly, owners have, and running a large business day to day.
Also keep in mind the commissioner works for the owners. They select him, and their goal is to maximize collective revenues/profits. Bud Selig is a slimebag piece of shit, will screw the fan and the player as fast as he can if it means another dime of profits for the rich ass owners…but that’s his job, and he’s actually tremendous at it. I hate what he does to baseball, but he doesn’t care because improving the game or improving the fan experience, again, isn’t his job (well, it is as far as maximizing both short and long term profits, but that’s the only reason they matter to him)….

Costas’ book Fair Ball: A Fan’s Case for Baseball was a good read. He listed a lot of good points on where baseball needs to be changed and they weren’t far-fetched. Since then he’s kind of turned into a sanctimonious prick, or maybe he was already like that.
"It's too late now."
by ResDog on Oct 23, 2009 9:01 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I haven’t read his book, so I can’t comment on that. After being forced to listen to Costas as much NBC airs him, I’ve come to realize he represents all that is wrong in MSM (especially the sports side of it) to me. He pretty much mimicks every terrible opinion, method, thought and action they pollute the world with. At least that’s the impression I’ve formed. Things like the whole Costas/Bissinger attack on all things that don’t fit into their way of thinking (namely, blogging) doesn’t help that perception.
Yeah, he’s also a prick, which doesn’t help. Not sure what any of this has to do with the job of baseball commissioner, though, what does broadcasting have to do with that? As far as I can tell Costas didn’t even finish up his college degree, much less gain any experience in anything business related ever…

If I look at this seriously there are 2 ways to look at it.
1) The next Commish will get in by basically a coup ( the Selig way) in which case we will not know who is heading the Coup by their very nature. And Selig will have either managed to piss off enough owners to make it happen.
2) Or the next Commish will have to be currently under 50 and not see the job for 10+ years. I would love to see Frank Robinson or Sandy Alderson allowed at the job but I think their age would prevent them from being an option. How about Mr. Beane from across the bay?

by daveinexile on Oct 23, 2009 8:11 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Sandy Alderson would actually make a lot of sense. Not so sure about Frank Robinson, his wikipedia page says he is working in the commissioners office, but it would depend on what kind of role he does there, because that seems to be the only thing in his background that would relate to the commissioners job in any way. I think Beane would be a pretty bad candidate for a variety of reasons, one of those being he has a part ownership stake in the A’s. While I think a GM job is good experience for a couple of aspects of the commissioners job, I don’t think it covers nearly enough – a candidate needs a much broader amount of experience (like Alderson, who’s had experience as a GM, CEO of the Padres, and executive VP of baseball operations for MLB).
by Missing Barry on Oct 23, 2009 8:33 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Beane I put out there more on the presumption the job doesn’t get filled again tell sometime in the 2020’s.
If there was a sudden act of God making the office open Alderson on Robinson would be my first two candidates. Robinson has done a lot as both a player then later. He is not exactly the ultra smooth talker to the media type but is seems if there is problem the league thinks needs addressing Robinson is on their speed dial. When the Giants were utter carp at the end of the 70’s he was here for a couple season that were almost respectable ( Think Joe Morgan’s homer knocking the Bums out). When the league basically took over the Expos Robinson stopped being the MLB’s Vice-President of On-Field Operations the be the manager of the Expos. It would depend what kind of image the owners want at the time.

Maybe I am the only one but I think some what of Joe Morgan says he says to get peoples goat. They man was an OBP BEAST as a player and you don’t get that way by accident. The first time I remeber hearing why ISO is useful was Morgan doing Giants game in the 80’s. Don’t get me wrong he is frequently like a piece of tinfoil on an alum filling and I would love to seeFJM start again I just don’t think he is a dumb about stats as he likes to act.

I think Morgan is genuinely upset, but about his authority over baseball knowledge as a broadcaster rather than his standing as a player. The saberists (easier to spell than sabermatricians) represent the possibility of people who haven’t played the game to have authoritative knowledge of the game. It doesn’t matter that the saberists’ theories would identify Morgan as even a greater player than he is already understood to be because that’s not what he’s worried about. Like a lot of baseball players, especially from that era, he didn’t go to college, and so his only authority as a broadcaster is the fact that he played the game — but if any knowledgeable saberist can offer even a better understanding of the game, especially the hitting aspects, then why listen to Joe Morgan?
As with a lot of analysts, I think Morgan is at his best when he’s commenting on in-game strategy, particularly with the subtleties of infield play. Saberism is making inroads on defensive measures but at this point still mostly has things to say about hitting.
by non sequitur on Oct 24, 2009 12:41 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
then why listen to Joe Morgan?
I think this gets to the crux of things. Sadly I avoid listening to most national broadcasters now days. A lot of it is the type of broadcasting FOX has championed and now seems the standard for most broadcasting jobs. The wannabe ADD sons of Howard Cassel and less able ADD sons of John Madden seem to fill most broadcasting spots and as the all saying goes “bad money will chase out good money” seems to apply to broadcasting as well.

Wouldn't surprise me for a second... our own Larry Baer
One post noted that the Commissioner’s position is CEO of MLB and his JOB is to make owners rich. While I appreciate what Larry’s done for us, he strikes me as an ambitious guy who would jump at this kind of opportunity… and unlike Beane, who’s a baseball guy, Baer’s essentially a politician… as is any good CEO.
And that raises another point, I honestly don’t think the owners want a baseball guy in the true sense of the phrase. George W would make a great Commissioner in their eyes because he fully understands the expectations and goals. But a GM… even one who’s a part owner… is too close to the players.
Just think… Build a Baer kiosks in every ballpark in the country… local boy done good!

Who REPLACES bud selig? Any soulless huckster used car dealer. Who SUCCEEDS him? That's a harder question.
It depends on what the owners are trying to achieve at the time the new guy is hired. Bud slug got the job because White Sox vile owner jerry reinsdorf — who was bud’s puppetmaster in the mid-90’s — was leading a group of owners rebelling against Fay Vincent’s independent way of steering the game; reinsdorf & others wanted more control. They toppled Vincent & installed one of their own as an “interim” commissioner. Ha ha ha! Oh, that “interim” gag still makes me laugh.
Vincent got the job because the owners were trying to maximize continuity from the deceased Bart Giamatti.
Giamatti got the job because the owners wanted more of a baseball “heart” than the extremely corporate Peter Ueberroth. I also believe that Ueberroth was savvy enough as a sports businessman (though not so much baseball) that they were concerned that he was smart enough to see some of their individual shady choices and not necessarily be cool with them. (The owners act in concert as a cartel, but also individually as monopolists in their territories… and as whatever-they-really-are in the teams they own; some are treating it like a personal piggy bank, others aren’t.)
So my point is that we don’t know what value the owners will be trying to achieve when they make their next pick.
As for my opinion, I would stay away from ex-players. (a) This is a business job, and the Commissioner has to balance many interests for the long term. I think this is a particular failing for selig, but so be it. (b) The players’ union is the strongest labor union in the history of humanity, without exception. They are already very well represented in MLB’s decisionmaking.
I would stay away from broadcasters, too— not that they aren’t intelligent or savvy (I would give Costas top marks for intelligence, savvy, and societal perspective), but those aren’t really plusses in the minds of the owners. It is a business job.
My personal favorite for the job (except myself, as I would LOVE to have that job) is Richard Alexander Alderson, but he will not get it. He was clearly being groomed for the Commissioner’s chair when MLB brought him in under selig in selig’s infancy as Commissioner. He should be in the HOF for — if nothing else — breaking the umpire’s then-union and cracking the whip on the bad ones and re-instilling a sense of the rule book and initiating the idea that maybe it is more important that umpires get calls right than just act like they got it right. I don’t have a guess about what happened with Sandy at MLB — maybe he just got bored and tired of waiting, and saw that selig wasn’t going anywhere soon, so he left for the first good job he could get (GM of Padres). I don’t know. But whatever happened, I don’t see the owners going back to him. Too bad.
Sadly, it can’t be Billy Mays. (/pours out a little OxyClean on the ground)

Nodding in the affirmative. Got it absolutely right on the Uberoth to Giammatti to Vincent Commissioner Double Play combo. Some good nostalgia in that post. You should do this more often, rather than bury your thoughts in a generic thread such as this, as if they were not worthy of separate posts themselves. There is so much ill written, and inanane mental masturbation by a lot of the folks who wandered in from the “letters to the editor” offshoots, that I am positive much that is worthy of digestions and comment is getting overlooked.
Anyway.
Sandy was a former Marine. An independent, yet compassionate man who married into the Haas family and who actually used to take BART to the Coliseum when he was Oakland GM from his home in the City. Not because he had to, but because he was an early advocate of “green” travel, and unlike politicians who pay lip service to ideas, Alderson was and is a guy who walks the walk. Like I said, a former Marine officer.
And I am convinced he detests Bud Selig. As much for the perniciousness arising from Seligs hypocrisy over peds as anything else, as it was Alderson who presided over the Bash brothers enhanced physical training programs.
