Still no female GMs, thanks god! Next thing you know they'll let them run for president or something.

Anyway, I wish the Giants would do something like this. Who knows if he'll be a complete failure, but at least there would be some hope around this place for awhile.

I guess Kim Ng isn’t good at interviewing, or something.

We should SWOOP on her to groom her as the successor to Sabes.

I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

Or we could hire outside of the organization and find someone who doesn’t think like Sabean.

Why do San Francisco teams insist on having terrible offenses? Frank Gore and Pablo Sandoval can't do it all.

Natto said groom her as a successor to Sabean, that means she would then be inside the organization.

It’s because Ng really stands for “Not a GM”.

question

What is Ng’s role, exactly, with the Dodgers? I’ve heard her name bandied about a lot over the past few years and am just curious… does she have a defined area of expertise or is she more of an all around Assistant GM-type in LA?

stealing from the Red Sox front office is a good strategy

they seem to have somewhat of a clue there and aren’t a bunch of old timey baseball dinosaurs.

I think Hoyer seems like a good future GM candidate. Ng will get her shot eventually.

Ng will get her shot eventually.

I hope you’re right, but I don’t know if that’s true. Baseball is a boys club and hiring her as the GM would certainly ruffle feathers in any team for the mere fact that she is a woman. Sadly, her sex makes it a risky move, so it would take extremely progressive ownership.

I also wonder why so many people feel strongly that he is such a great candidate. I have heard she is a great negotiator and wonderful o nthe administrative side, but I’ve never heard her named tied to player acquisitions, draft strategy, etc. I think in many ways her sex helps her as much as it hurts her. If she were a white man, would people be consider her “overlooked for jobs” this often? For that matter, would she get this many interviews if she were a white man?

I don’t know the answers to those questions, but I think they are fair

by NeifiChicken on Oct 21, 2009 7:12 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pascarelli was saying last week that they’d already decided on Hoyer for the job, so I pretty much assumed the Ng interview was just a PR move to show how progressive they were (or a kind of voluntary “Rooney Rule” move).

KLaw answered a question about Ng in his chat today by saying “if it was Ken Ng instead of Kim we wouldn’t be hearing anything about him”…or along those lines.

The first male, asian GM would still be a pretty big story.

Also, it’s impossible to know. It’s conceivable that “Ken Ng” would already be a GM by now, what with the impressive resume of being a part of some high-quality FOs.

Jim (Bryan, TX)
With Jed Hoyer (apparently) taking the SD job, why does Kim Ng continue to get passed over for the top spot? Or is it a case of her being a high profile candidate due to her gender that all of her interviews gather more attention than other multiple interviewees?
Klaw
Let me answer that with another question: Why should Kim Ng get a GM job? The qualifications of GM candidates are almost completely unknown to even serious fans. Yes, you’ve heard of certain candidates, because they’re touted by friends in the media. Ng gets even more publicity because of her gender; Ken Ng wouldn’t get half the same press, even if he was precisely as qualified as Kim Ng is. The only GM candidates fans can adequately assess are former GMs, because on the rest, you don’t have enough information. In many cases, I don’t even have enough information.

that doesn’t seem quite fair. plenty of male assistant GMs out there get plenty of attention as possible future GMs (Forst, Antonetti, Hoyer, etc.)

I get what he means though. Those people receive attention but why? He’s saying that even to well educated fans and people like himself it’s pretty hard to distinguish how qualified even assistant GM types are.

It’s generally pretty tough to find out just how much responsibility these people have in their respective front offices and if their particular job experience makes them a qualified GM candidate or not.
