Observation: Where are Sabean’s detractors when he speaks at FanFest? I never hear booing or challenging questions. Are they standing in line for Polish sausages when he talks?

I thought that was Haft’s job. Even if Haft thinks Sabean is a genius, he gets enough letters from the fans to ask Sabean some of the tough questions he gets asked.

I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

Haft’s answer to the first question is ridiculously uninformative.
Q: How can the Giants improve their offense?
A: The Giants must improve their offense

This one was my fave. I don’t mind any of these players really, but it was hard to get past the writer’s first sentence. And then the “Good job, Brian” and Haft’s pithy response took it to another level of LOL worthiness.
I think Sabean did a great job with his Spring Training invitees this year, and that might have been the biggest factor in us having a winning record. Juan Uribe, great player with a lot of pop, not to mention his presence in the clubhouse; Eli Whiteside, great game-caller with a little pop, too; Andres Torres, perfect late-inning defensive substitute with tons of speed; Justin Miller, great middle reliever but unfortunately got injured; and the same for Brandon Medders. Good job, Brian.

A little pop? I guess in the sense that he has a very, very small, almost microscopic amount of pop

Where is this pop of which he speaks? The stats do not back it up.
Why do San Francisco teams insist on having terrible offenses? Frank Gore and Pablo Sandoval can't do it all.

Eli’s pop is less stats-y, more fizzy sweet.

“a little pop” = .393 SLG in the minors – and a .325 SLG in 2008 in the freaking PCL.
Also, we’re totally giving Juan Uribe a multi-year deal and he’s totally going to return to being Juan Uribe as soon as the ink dries.

Brandon Medders was injured?

Dude, what do you want?
Medders was a cheaply signed middle reliever who posted a 3.01 ERA, respectable strikeout rate, and gave up fewer HRs per 9 innings than Matt Cain. I don’t know what more you could ask for unless you expect Cy Young winners pitching the 6th and 7th innings.

I like this one
Three suggestions in need of your feedback: 1. Would an offer of Jonathan Sanchez, Travis Ishikawa and Kevin Pucetas be enough to bring us Adrian Gonzalez? 2. Would an offer of Brian Wilson, Joe Martinez, Fred Lewis and Bowker be enough to bring us Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero? 3. General manager Brian Sabean was at his best when he had Ned Coletti as his assistant, so why not hire Kevin Towers in the same capacity, given his nose for talent and ability to trade?

He was “best” then because that’s when he still had Barry Bonds.

What is with this obession with Miguel Montero? I just don't get it.
by Squire_Boone on Oct 20, 2009 7:38 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
An article on Rotoworld pointed this out:
Miguel Montero: .294/.355/.478 in 425 AB
Chris Iannetta: .228/.344/.460 in 350 AB
29 points of OPS, and yet Montero is a breakout, and Iannetta is a disappointment.
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...
by rotorueter on Oct 20, 2009 10:46 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, b/c Iannetta had OPS+ from 2008 was 127 while it was 105 this year.
Montero went from a 94 OPS+ in 08 to a 112 OPS+ in 2009.
Not saying one is better than another, but when talking about breakout/disappointments baseline is important.

True, but I get the feeling that Montero is going to be overvalued relative to Iannetta going forward.

For example:
Going into this year if Tim Lincecum and Greinke both posted a year line of: 3.00 ERA, 200K, 220 IP
one would be a disappointment and one would be a break out

We should actually build from within, Posey etc. but that would probably mean taking a step backwards in 2010.

Okay, one more complaint
I’ve indeed supported Sabean more often than not. I believe he has performed admirably overall. Check the record. Some of his trades and free-agent signings haven’t helped the Giants much. This could be said about any GM who stays on the job as long as Sabean has.
Yeah, uh, I am checking the record, and it says the Giants are 382-427 in the last five years, that they haven’t made the playoffs since 2003, that they haven’t won a playoff game since 2002, and that they’ve had either the worst offense or close to the worst offense in the game for five years straight despite having Barry Bonds for the first three of those years.
Of course, it his last mailbag, a reader claimed that, aside from Joe Mauer, every single starting catcher in the majors had at least 350 minor league games as a catcher, which proves Buster Posey isn’t ready. Of course, that’s not true – there are at least five or six other guys with under 350 minor league games as a catcher, including some of the best in the game – but Haft apparently didn’t bother to check – he just agreed with the guy and said his points made perfect sense.
Chris Haft is either a shill, a dimwit, lazy as hell, or all three.

Despite agreeing with you overall I’m going to cling to one of my last fading memories of unmitigated, unadulterated hope as a Giants fan and point out that we did indeed win a playoff game in 2003. Thanks Jason.

Know what I'd like to see?
Grant send an email to Haft’s inbox refuting Sabean and Bochy’s “Better situational hitting” them with his most recent post ("Giants Organizational Philosophy). I have a feeling such an email would become one of Haft’s “I received several emails similar to yours.” Yeah, like all the emails he gets are from dimwits who have know idea what they are talking about. There have to be SOME intelligently written emails. But, because the inbox’s purpose is to make Sabean and Bochy not look like idiots, those logically negative emails don’t get a response.
