Winn wants to remain a Giant?
MLBTR is framing this article as Winn wants to remain a Giant. After reading this article, I don't see that leap. It seems like Winn is just reluctant to leave because he loves SF, but knows the decision isn't up to him.

this falls into the “don’t tempt Bochy” category. As long as he’s the manager, there’s no such thing as a “lesser role” for vets like Molina and Winn.

If a gun was to my head, I’d bring back Winn as a late inning defensive replacement type over Molina in any capacity.

I’m certain Molina wouldn’t come back for less money (never mind a lesser role) so that’s moot.
Winn may, but I’m not sure whether he’s an upgrade over our internal options going forward so any money spent (no matter how reduced) would be a waste.

I agree with this. If Bochy weren’t managing, I’d have Winn back. But he isn’t, so I won’t.

Nice to know that we wants to remain a Giant and he’s been a good player and good giant over the years. I’d imagine we’ll go in a different direction though.
And if we were to re-sign him then that’d be pretty pointless. We’ve got a whole bunch of below average outfielders (Lewis, Bowker, Schierholtz, Velez, Torres to varying degrees), why would we want to spent our limited resources on signing another?

Not surprising since Winn’s an East Bay native and went to college over at Santa Clara…
Normally I’d look into bringing Winn back as a bench player, but others made a good point that it’s not worth tempting Bochy.

Yeah, Winn will probably be a useful signing for some team but he’s just not a fit on our team with the plethora of OF we have and Bochys love of veterans.

I’d only accept brining Winn back if somehow Rowand was unloaded and Winn played CF primarily—even with his low UZR in CF. Basically, I’d rather have Winn than Rowand on next year’s team.

Good question, I guess the better of two evils. Winn’s low UZR in CF was probably due to small sample size. He had a very respectable year batting LH, and he wouldn’t be due a raise.
So in theory, move him to CF, start him against RHP, dump Rowand, and open up the corners outfield spots for Bowker, Nate, and Lewis.

…but you could not sign Winn and still open up LF and RF for Lewis, Schierholtz and Bowker. I don’t get that part of your argument.

CF for Winn. Bowker, Schierholz, Lewis, FA signing on the corner rotating or whoever outperforms the other.
Basically, Winn’s offensive production is too much of a liability in RF/LF. But at CF it would be acceptable. Especially if he hits leadoff or lower in the order. Plus, moving him over would make room for a FA signing or for one of the above mentioned players to step up.

I don’t think so. He has a ton of innings at CF since 2002 (as far back as Fangraphs has UZR) and he’s a -1.2 UZR/150 guy there. Every year he gets older he gets slower. I think his RF UZR numbers are more questionable than his CF ones. I’d be surprised if Winn was much better than -5 UZR/150 at CF at this point…

Why? Rowand is a better hitter. They’re probably similar defensively. Rowand is three years younger. Rowand is the better player going forward.

Just because Rowand is younger does not equal better player going forward. Rowand could be just as far past his prime as Winn.
Rowand may hit for more power, but look at his line .261/.319/.419 vs. Winn’s LH line of .292/.354/.397, I’d take Winn’s. Plus, Winn is cheaper and doesn’t flail at sliders 5 ft off the plate.

yeah, that’s a problem. I have no idea who’d take him, but I’d hope that if the Giants ate some of the contract they could get something back—maybe even a piece for rebuilding…
A possible fits could be either of the Chicago teams. The rumored Bradley/Rowand switch could work here. Or maybe the Brewers after they lose Cameron to FA. I guess anyone who could use some gamey gritterness.

If the Bradley/Rowand swap happens, that takes away playing time from Schierholtz/Bowker/Lewis, something that you didn’t want to happen.

No it doesn’t but it certainly helps his chances. And why only use Winns LH line rather than his complete line? I think there’s a very good chance that Winns LH line will see a sharp downturn next year. Winn won’t be cheaper unless we were able to get out of Rowands contract.

It makes sense to me ...
if it is a one-year deal for about $1 million, similiar to Uribe’s 2009 deal. Fangraphs had his value pretty high, driven by defense. He can play CF, and maybe take some at-bats from Rowand. His hitting from the left-side still plays in CF. Of course, never let him face a lefty.
Too bad Winn didn’t have his 2008 season in 2009, that might have been enough for the Giants to pass the Rockies. Of course, it might have meant a long-term deal for him. So maybe it was for the best.
