Cain for Fielder or Gonzalez? Or not at all?
Our rotation won't be affected too much, and Travis Ishikawa would be a very good backup. Plus, we still have Timmy, Sanchez, Penny, Bumgarner, and Zito. Or, we could trade Madison Bumgarner instead and keep the one-two punch of Lincecum and Fatt Matt. What do you think? Or, should we instead pursue a big time hitter in free agency? Your call. Well, really, it's Sabean's call. Whatever. I believe our Giants should keep Cain and deal Bumgarner for Adrian Gonzalez because he's an amazing hitter and he has a cheap contract. He will make 5 mil in 2010, and he has a 2011 club optiopn for 5.5 million, as opposed to Prince Fielder's 13 mil or so, but
that's just my opinion.

Pitching, pitching and more pitching
The reason the Giants played over .500 ball in 2009 was because of the success of the pitching staff. Would prefer SF look for speedy tablesetters at the top of the lineup
To be a table setter you need to have good OBP skills. Think of Panda routinely hitting with runners on base and please tell me how that is not a good thing?
Who’s brain did you bring me?
Brain SabeanOranother.
We just need better hitters, not ultra-specialized players like “table setters”.
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...
Only trade Cain If It Is A Deal That Returns Multiple Quality Players Ready To Start At The MLB Level.
To trade him straight up for even a hitter as good as Fielder or Gonzalez accomplishes nothing as it creates a hole in the rotation just as big as the hole in the lineup it fills.

5. Adrian Gonzalez, 1B, Padres – This is the fellow I suspect the [Red] Sox will go after. They would then move Kevin Youkilis to third, with Ortiz and Mike Lowell sharing DH duties. Gonzalez came very close to getting traded to the Mariners at the deadline in a five-for-one (Seattle wouldn’t give up a certain fifth minor leaguer). Only question is, do the Sox have enough players to give San Diego?

Our rotation wouldn’t be affected that much if we traded Matt Cain? Bumgarner for Adrian Gonzalez? The Adrian Gonzalez that’s one of the top 1B in the game? The Adrian Gonzalez that’s one of the top 1B in the game with one of the biggest bargain contracts in the game? Are you by any chance TakeAGiantStepNGo with a new name?

Of course they can be found. The trouble is that they’re either cheap and a huge risk or safer and extremely expensive. Hell, Marquis made almost $10 million this year. We don’t have that kind of budget room to spend on a pitcher.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
"AT LAST I AM A PARENTS." - Buster
And
Before this year, Marquis was a guy who a) did not pitch close to 220 IP a year and b) was worth between -0.7 and 1.9 WAR every season. So he’s not exactly a safe bet to replace Cain’s production either.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
"AT LAST I AM A PARENTS." - Buster
I’d be surprised if Cain puts together another season like this one, though. I think he’s going to be closer to the pre-2009 Cain, and his value is a bit inflated at this point.

Well it depends on what you think Cain did this year. If you’re looking at ERA, sure, that’s a fair point. If you look at FIP/WAR, though, here’s what Cain’s accomplished:
2006: 190.2 IP, 3.96 FIP, 4.01 tRA, 3.5 WAR
2007: 200 IP, 3.78 FIP, 3.74 tRA, 4.0 WAR
2008: 217.2 IP, 3.91 FIP, 4.80 tRA, 3.7 WAR
2009: 217.2 IP, 3.89 FIP, 4.38 tRA, 3.6 WAR
Talk about consistency…
by Missing Barry on Oct 20, 2009 1:02 PM PDT up reply actions
But that doesn’t make any sense, we’re not talking about Cain as though he’s the pitcher he was in 2009 ERA-wise, we’re talking about him FIP-wise. Pitchers who pitch 200+ innings consistently at the level Cain does are not easy to find without paying a lot of money or taking big risks.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
"AT LAST I AM A PARENTS." - Buster
The trouble is that they’re either cheap and a huge risk or safer and extremely expensive.
Perfectly sums up one of the many reasons I hope Sabean doesn’t trade Cain. It’s often cheaper to retain your own players than it is to outbid the competition on the free agent market.
That and Sabean will mess up any trade he makes for Cain.
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.
Enquiring minds want to know – how exactly are we supposed to find these 200+ IP workhorses with FIPS around 3.8? Hope that Zito and Dirty can pitch deeper into games and lower their FIPs? Are we supposed to trade for starting pitching in addition to offense? Are we picking up Fielder’s $10.5m salary in 2010 in addition to one of these FAs?
Cliff Lee – $9m (if option doesn’t get picked up – UNLIKELY)
Joel Pineiro – $7.5m
Randy Wolf – $5m
Jason Marquis – $10m, FIP 4.10,
Jon Garland – $10m (if option doesn’t get picked up), FIP 4.48
Doug Davis – $8.75m, FIP 4.84
Ages respectively (as of the 2009 season) are: 31, 30, 32, 30, 29, 33.

Maybe I got the tone of my post wrong but I’m not being combative. (Saving my energy for Dodgers/Phils Game 5). I really am more curious than anything as to how proponents of the Cain for whoever deal see it playing out. How can we trade Cain and not see a measurable impact on the starting rotation, given the talent that’s available, the budget we have, and the gap we’d have to fill in losing one of the anchors of our pitching staff?
There will be a noticeable loss in the pitching rotation. It’s worth it. We need the hitting. I think we’ll more easily find rotation filler than bats to fill out our lineup at positions of need. Cain’s trade value right now is at its peak.
by Missing Barry on Oct 20, 2009 1:03 PM PDT up reply actions
But if it is, say, Cain for Prince Fielder (assuming the Brewers would do it straight-up, which I’m not sure they would) – that’s going to be a big upgrade at first base, but it’s also going to take up a big chunk of our available budget. How are we going to, then, replace Cain, add a fifth starter, and fill all of our other holes with the money we have available?
Honestly, the kind of Cain trade that would make the most sense is something like the package Haren got for the A’s. But there’s no way Sabean would make a trade like that at this point after the season we just had.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
"AT LAST I AM A PARENTS." - Buster

"AT LAST I AM A PARENTS." - Buster
hmm
if he wants 9-10 million NOBODY should sign him. he has a significant injury history, and he needs to prove he can stay healthy for anyone to give him a significant contract. i would do a 1 yr, 3-4 mil deal. another interesting name is duschschererer. or resign fat cain, though i probably wouldn’t
Personally I think Sheets will get a fair contract that takes his high risk into account (which means less $$)…
Unless someone securitizes his contract and sells it off to be packaged with other high risk securities and sold to investors…speaking of which, I think I just came up with a way to make a lot of money. Pretend you didn’t read this…

jeez, I didn’t know! Plus the Padres have already expressed an interest to do a Bumgarner for Gonzalez swap, so there you go.
Bengie Molina is the slowest human in existence- except maybe Homer Simpson. And Man-Ram.
I still prefer the Giants making some kind of deal for Ryan Braun.
FIRE BRUCE BOCHY NOW!!!!!!
AND TAKE BRIAN SABEAN WITH HIM!!!!!
I would prefer the Giants had this lineup
1B Pujols
2B Utley
3rd Pand
SS Hanley
RF Zobrist
CF Granderson/Kemp/Sizemore
LF Crawford
C Mauer
With a pitching staff of
Timmy
Grienke
Halladay
King Felix
CC
with Mariano closing

That'll happen
when Bruce Bochy realizes that maybe starting Randy Winn every effing game wasn’t such a good idea after all…
Bengie Molina is the slowest human in existence- except maybe Homer Simpson. And Man-Ram.
and putting Bengie at cleanup, and keeping Nate Schierholtz on the bench and playing FRED LEWIS…

I have no problem with the second part.

Fred Lewis is the problem.

I’d take Votto and Bruce.
Maybe H. Ramirez.
Why not Mauer?
I bet Cainer and Madbum get it done!
Matt Cain: throwing complete game shutouts since 06'. No big deal.

You know, I agree with you, but I was just thinking the other day that after watching the Cliff Lee fiasco this year, I’m never going to say “x wouldn’t trade y” ever again. I mean seriously, WTF was Cleveland even thinking about? I couldn’t even figure out why they felt like they needed to move him this year, much less get in such a rush about it that they shipped him off for a pile of crap before the bidding could even heat up.
Moral: you just never know what stupid things GMs are going to do to justify their position.

Urban on KNBR talked about ...
a package with Schierholtz and Runzler for Gonzalez. It may have been a listener who bought is up, but Urban didn’t refute him. Heck, why not throw in Frandsen and Bowker.
We need to be realistic. The one thing about Cain/Fielder is that they are both under club control for the same amount of time, right? The motivation for the Brewers is that Fielder is more expensive, and they need pitching. We need offense and also should have more room in our budget. But talent-wise, I don’t think Cain is enough to get Fielder. We could have used Alderson and Barnes to add to the package. That’s why the trades for Garko and Sanchez were lame – not because Alderson and Barnes are future can’t miss stars, but rather they could have been packaged for solid upgrades instead of modest upgrades.
“Schierholtz looks like a ballplayer! And Runzler’s got a great arm! Sounds fair to me!!”

Teams are always looking to add more “ballplayers” to their club.

If I was running the Giants, I would look to trade Cain this offseason. His value will never be higher. I think he’d get a much, much bigger return than Sanchez. We need the hitting desperately, and it will be harder to upgrade than to find someone like Penny that can come in on a short contract to fill the rotation. However, I would not trade Cain for any corner infielder not named Pujols. Corner infielders are one of the easiest places to find decent hitting. Sure our incompetent GM struggles with that, but it really isn’t that hard to get decent production. I’d be looking for a hitter at a premium position if it involved trading Cain. CF or middle infield especially. Middle infield defense isn’t that important to us – our pitchers gets lots of K’s and few GB’s, so I’d focus more on offense. I dunno if I’d find the right trade, but that’s what I would be looking for. We should be able to fill 1B with a decent hitter without trading involving Cain.
I swear this much to you:
If Brian Sabean were to trade Matt Cain, you WILL NOT be happy with the results. Let’s go over the scenarios real quick:
A) We trade him for a player coming off an injury who will likely get injured again. The player will be over 30.
B) We’ll trade him for someone coming off a SSS season that fools Sabean into thinking we’re getting a top-notch player
C) We’ll package Cain with Bumgarner and Neal to acquire a power hitter who’s already hit 30 years old. We might get a reliever thrown into the deal as well.
Not sure I see any other alternatives for a Sabean trade. But no matter how you slice it, the Giants WILL get screwed by any Sabean trade.
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.
I didn’t even read your post, but based on your first thought I can tell I’m going to agree with all your points. I made sure to say what I would do if I were running the Giants, not what I hope Sabean does…
by Missing Barry on Oct 19, 2009 11:24 AM PDT up reply actions
I’d think that if you would do it, you’d also hope Sabean would do it.
I just know we’ll get screwed if Sabes trades Cain.
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.
Well, in principle I hope Sabean would have the same decision-making process as myself. The reality is I know differently, so I have as much fear of Sabean getting fleeced by an old, high BA, low OBP piece of crap veteran instead of young player as you do. Basically, I think we should go find that player I suggested, but I think if Sabean goes and tries to find that player, he’ll end up with $.60 on the dollar, which changes how I feel about what the team “should” do.

Exactly. I have no faith in him anymore, I know most people here don’t either… I’m really honestly surprised that Neukom does have any faith in him.
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

I don’t think he’d bring back as much as Cain, but I keep thinking Wilson is the guy we should shop. His value/replacability is higher than Cain’s.

I’d also shop Wilson in addition to Cain this offseason. We have other good bullpen pieces. I just don’t know what he’d return…

I’m right there with you on that one. I’ve been suggesting dangling Wilson for over a year now.

(I wouldn’t have mentioned that if I were you. That points not in your favor since a year of productive Wilson gave us a good player AND significantly raised his trade value)

I’ve been suggesting waiting for Wilson to give us an extremely productive year and raise his trade value significantly and then dangling him in the trade market for well over a year now.
Fixed.

I’d suggest dangling Bocock, but it’s hard

Johnson is sensitive. If we dangled him out there he could have froze up or worse, erupted.
"It's too late now."
Well Sabes and Bochy handled Johnson gently and delicately. I’m sure if they had put Johnson out there, they would’ve only had the best in mind. Maybe we could’ve seen Johnson rise again in the postseason.

"Trade Cain for a fat first baseman?"
Those words from a previous post made me laugh for a week! And while Tony Bruno may not be “an expert” on all things baseball, I respect his opinion, which is that Fielder will eat his way to the AL within 3 years. But Bumgarner for Gonzalez… now that’s an interesting thought… and a deal I’d support.
Before the “trade away the future” crowd has a fit, remember… Gonzalez is a proven everyday player and Bumgarner is a “top prospect”. I do not… repeat do not… share Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum’s fascination with “veterans”, but I’ll trade a prospect any day for a 27 year-old first baseman who hits 40 HRs and 100 RBIs while playing half his games in a lousy hitters park.
Back in July, when the Red Sox was interested in AGon…
Olney notes that a deal is probably still unlikely because of two major hurdles the Red Sox would have to overcome.
I. As Olney puts it the Padres would require an “enormous” package of prospects, very similar to what the Mariners gave up for Erik Bedard, said one NL talent evaluator.
II. Even if the Padres received a package that they deemed acceptable Padres ownership would still have to sign off on trading the 27-year-old superstar, which seems unlikely because Gonzalez is one of the cornerstones of the franchise.
The Padres have already tried to deal former Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy this year, and any attempt to move Gonzalez would likely infuriate the team’s fan base.
The Bedard trade: The Baltimore Orioles send LHP Erik Bedard to the Seattle Mariners for OF Adam Jones, LHPs George Sherrill and Tony Butler and RHPs Chris Tillman and Kam Mickolio.
That’s five players, people – two already in the bigs, two top 5 pitching prospects and 1 (I think) Thomas Neal-like hitting prospect.
