All-time favorite SF Giants: left-handed starter

The second-base poll was as close as I had anticipated. I am surprised, however, at the outcome. Personally, I voted for Jeff Kent. Going in though, I had Robby Thompson picked to take it at 3:2. Kent actually had a massive lead early on, but Thompson closed the gap. I think it's safe to call it, but if anyone still needs to cast a vote, here is the link:

http://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2009/10/8/1077582/all-time-favorite-sf-giants-second

The current second-base poll is as follows: Jeff Kent 50%, Robby Thompson 42%.

I am calling the pinch-hitting poll for Candy Maldonado, who received 19% of the votes. Second place was approximately a four-way tie between Felipe Crespo, Mike Ivie, Nate Schierholtz, and (write-in) Mark Sweeney.

Now, in honor of the Carlton Chronicles re-dux, this is the poll for the all-time favorite San Francisco Giants left-handed starting pitcher. To avoid ridicule, the imposition of over analysis, and the like, please vote for your FAVORITE player at each position. It doesn't necessarily have to be the best, meaning if Dan Gladden is your fave in CF, it's your prerogative to vote for him over Willie Mays. Regarding WRITE-IN VOTES ... PLEASE, when casting a write-in vote, check other on the questionnaire, then below title a comment with ONLY THE PLAYERS NAME. Any thoughts, statements, etc. should go in the body of the comment. Anyone else voting for the same write-in candidate, PLEASE respond to the previous player comment by titling your comment with ONLY A "+1". If you would like to clarify a "+1" comment, please include the player's name in the body of the comment.

I probably would have voted for Woody if my last memory wasn’t of him being bombed around the park his last season. I voted for Vida Blue, because I remember the excitement of us acquiring an elite pitcher like that after Charles Finley attempted to unload his best players to the Yankees and Red Sox and the commissioner voided the trades.

Voted Estes

As a kid the only Giants’ aces seemed to be older guys who threw junk, they didn’t even really look like baseball players…Reuschel, Burkett, Swift, etc…I lived in Connecticut and never got to see Giants’ games unless they played the Mets or Braves….I still remember the first time I saw Estes….

Estes was the first guy who was young would blow people away and strike people out…I loved him for it…I thought he was going to be our ace for years….

The meltdown was quick and severe (kind of like the Phillies 8th inning yesterday), but his 1997 season was pretty special to me…

by Sgt. Dingleberry on Oct 17, 2009 10:33 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Burkett and Swift weren’t older guys when they were Giants – Burkett was in his 20s and Swift in his early 30s. And while they weren’t dominant strike out guys, I wouldn’t classify them or Reuschel as junk ballers either.

I am fond of Estes, though. Prettiest curveball ever. Too bad he was such a headcase.

You're right about Burkett

I guess he just seemed like he was older? His windup? I don’t know….Don’t get me wrong, I liked the guy…

I wasn’t a full fledged baseball nerd yet, groundballs weren’t sexy yet, ya know?

But, something got me excited about Estes….Maybe, it was that curveball….

by Sgt. Dingleberry on Oct 17, 2009 11:46 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, the other thing about Estes is that Swift and Burkett had been gone a couple years by the time he came up – we were coming off opening day starts by Terry Mulholland and Mark Leiter. And the team had been bad for a few years despite Bonds and Williams because we had no pitching, and then Estes came up and promptly had a really good year in 1997, which coincided with the first playoff appearance in eight years, so…

I hated Estes because he was a head case (and I hated him BEFORE that playoff game in 2000 when he went off the base). An infielder would make an error and he would shoot daggers with his eyes at that player.

"All I know is right now, you comeback and do you dwell on that? I think you're man enough to take it, you're man enough to chew on it, to spit it out and you learn from it. ... by SFGuy on Oct 17, 2009 5:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ah hell, you shoulda seen Gaylord Perry in his prime. He would just have a shit fit on the mound if anybody dared make an error behind him. It wasn’t just daggers out of his eyes, he stomp around the mound and shout and swear and pummel the rosin bag into pulp before he could get back on the rubber and throw a pitch.

Vida was slightly past his prime when we got him. Rueter was good, not great. Dravecky could dominate. And then you add in his story – the cancer, the surgery, the unbelievable comeback, the injury, and then the amputation. My favorite of all time.

Atlee!

Growing up, there weren’t too many ballplayers who looked like me, so Atlee and Lenn Sakata were always favorites.

My pops used to fix his cars back when he lived on the peninsula. I have an autographed Atlee Hammaker baseball somewhere in my parent’s house.

On top of that, whenever the bases are loaded at an all-star game, you’re guaranteed to see Atlee. Not many Giants can claim that kind of notoriety.

Dravecky

Was awesome upon arriving in SF. Pitched lights out in the NLCS, if not for some unforeseen events he would have been the winning pitcher in what would have been a clinching of our first pennant in 25 years.

He also came back from the tumor to pitch in 89 and not only got 2 important wins in August, but his re-injury and comeback gave that team a big boost.

And furthermore, he is my favorite because after he retired he was penpals with my older brother for a couple of years and was very nice enough to respond to many letters my brother sent to him over a 2-3 year span. He even sent pictures and a signed copy of his book and I thought that was extremely nice of him since it’s totally something he didn’t have to do.

Noah Lowry would be 2nd for me. Couldn’t stand Estes or Woody.

One thing about Dave

We suffered from so many years of bad trades. I mean, you think Sabean’s made some doozies, I can’t even think of the last good one before…

Al Rosen traded Chris Brown and pitchers Mark Davis, Keith Comstock and Mark Grant for Dave Dravecky, Craig Lefferts and Kevin Mitchell. Davis did go on to win a Cy Young, but Mitchell won an MVP and Dravecky anchored that staff. As much as I hated to see Chris Brown leave (think Pedro Feliz in the early years), this one was highway robbery. And at last, we won one.

Is it just me or is there an “era” differential in the results? Vida Blue is one era, Dravecky another … then Woody over Estes, but between the both of them that’s the era I got into the Giants, the whole ‘97-2002 glory daze. And then there’s Zito.

well, he was probably better than Vida as a Giant — certainly had the better year in ’78 which was one of only two bright spots and exciting seasons between Mays and Will Clark. I thought about mentioning him as well except 1) he was better as an Astro; 2) he totally trashed the Giants and San Francisco after he left and 3) as one of the leaders of the 70s era “God Squad” he was pretty outspoken about what a cesspool of iniquity he considered the Bay Area to be.

So: Good? Yes, decently. Favorite? No.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

Interesting to hear he trashed the Giants and San Francisco considering he came back to the team in 1989 and 1990.

Amazing what a paycheck will do to motivate a guy.

I'd almost vote for anyone from the 1978 team

They were such a breath of fresh air. I even liked Roger Metzger with his half-finger and Terry Whitfield with that crazy stance. Remember when Clark, Herndon, and Whitfield were all in the top 10 BA list? I used to love to open up the paper and see that.

I remember my dad talking about being at a game Bob Knepper was pitching when his wife was giving birth at the same time. Apparently, they put updates on his wife’s labor up on the scoreboard throughout the game.

LH pitcher

Make it from the fifty’s forward and;

Antonelli, McCormick, or Pierce would put the poll candidates on the 2nd shelf.

Vida Blue

With the Giants, he had an odd tendency to pitch better in even numbered years than in odd numbered years: good years in ‘78, ’80, and ’82, an awful ’79 season. One wonders what his career would have looked like if Oakland hadn’t given him 312 innings, with 24 complete games at the age of 21. But he still was a fine pitcher over a long career; just a little under a HOF standard, perhaps, but a very good pitcher.

Fulfilling your Gus Benusa needs since 2009!

Vida was a joy

First guy I remember really demonstrating how a pitcher adjusts to losing the dominating heat. Isn’t he still the only guy to ever make the ASG as both a Giant and an Athletic?

Almost voted for Randy Johnson

Randy Johnson and Steve Carlton are my all-time favorite LHPs, followed by Vida. Since Vida had a longer (and much more successful) stint with the Giants, he got my vote. However, I thoroughly enjoyed watching RJ pitch last season.

I really liked Knepper and Hammaker in their day. Both of them seemed to be on the verge of greatness, but couldn’t get over the top. Lowry falls into that same category IMO. I know Rueter is a fan favorite, but I remember him as a workhorse who could be counted on for a lot of innings.

And then there’s Zito… best curveball I’ve ever seen when he’s “on”, but a complete train wreck as a Giant.

Complete train wreck of a contract maybe.

I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

Unfortunately for him...

his contract and his W-L record as a Giant are inseparable. I really liked him when he pitched for the A’s and I was excited when we signed him… until I saw how much we paid. There aren’t many guys who can handle the pressure that comes with that kind of contract… CC comes to mind as one who apparently can.

My “train wreck” comment is driven by a combination of his tendency to come unglued after giving up a few tough runs… what appears to be an inability to go more than 5-or-6 “quality” innings… AND knowing we’re paying $18m a year to watch him do so.

It helps when you have an offense that’s as awesome as the Yankees’.

I vote Lincecum.

Even though he’s right-handed.

Plotting the ultimate demise of Gore51 (never met him, I dunno he could be swell) so as to adopt Kyle Nicholson.

He only throws right handed to give himself a challenge.
