Open Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Rant

Granted, English is a difficult language with confusing, inconsistent rules.  It is our language, though, and we need to respect it and use it wisely.  Posters and would-be posters, you will find that your message may be taken a little more seriously if its intended audience can actually read it and understand it.  Coherence is the first step. Even if your message can be read, if you write like a dolt, people may assume that you are a dolt. Your potentially eloquent defense of Bengie Molina’s offensive value thus may fall on apparently deaf, uncaring ears, and you don’t want that to happen.  Don’t complain to me that life isn’t fair.

Disclaimer:  I do not claim to be all knowing on this subject.  I do not have a degree in English, and I make plenty of writing mistakes myself.

At any rate, a few of my pet peeves:

·         Apostrophe abuse:  Resist the temptation to insert apostrophes when using the plural form of words, but also remember the exception: “its” is the correct possessive form.  Don’t ask me why.  I don’t know why, but that is the way that it is. Just learn and apply.

·         Your and You’re:  It’s not that hard.  One means “you are” and the other refers to something that belongs to you.

·         Should of/ Should have: Sure, they sound similar when you contract these paired words, but what sense does “should of” make?  None, obviously.

I have plenty more, but now it’s your turn. Have fun. I hope I didn’t include too many typos.

What’s worse than worse are those people that have auto spellcheck and don’t use it. I’ve taken some online classes, where all work is posted in a bulletin board type format. Oh my! The typos!

Well, and auto spellcheck only catches misspellings-- not words that are WRONG but correctly spelled.

It’s more than one step… fairly complicated concepts get thrown around at times, between dick jokes and recipes. Face it – it’s a written medium. Our only indication of the quality of posters’ thoughts is the quality of their written communication. If your post reads like a text from my niece, I will consider your post with the seriousness I would give to her texts… having said that, yes, it is possible to be too persnickety.
Plus it’s just fun to make fun of other people’s innocent mistakes.

Utter frustration and futility.

While I want to agree with you completely,

I have trouble with the line “our only indication of the quality of posters’ thoughts is the quality of their written communication”; it seems to me that if you understand what’s written, whether in text style of formally, you can then evaluate the quality of the posters’ thoughts.

I think we are somewhere in between texting and formal writing in any case.

by Johnny Disaster on Oct 15, 2009 6:27 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You don’t read it without problem, and most misspelling problems are actually words that people spell with the wrong letters. Which doesn’t apply in the least to the “research” you’re citing. You have to know how to spell the words to be able to read them out of order. Step one: spelling. Step two: reading a jumbled mess.

Spelling matters.

Ha. No, I really just have a long-standing crusade against the English Major as Grammar King idea. It’s useful to the major and you’re expected to have a basic understanding of how to write, but most English majors haven’t seen the inside of a stylebook since high school. English majors don’t study grammar. They study books. Big difference.

It’s a convention that comes from a need to increase clarity based on the limitations of early typesetting technology. Typed media has long since advanced to the point where it’s easy to distinguish punctuation and spacing using a standard single space. The entire utility for the rule has been out of date for decades. At this point it’s nothing more than an arbitrary standard that mostly just stands to confuse people, if we’re speaking in practical terms. And the standards of written language should function in practical terms. Most of them do, even, oftentimes, when they seem strange.

In short: There really is no need for it.

You know the word “Quixotic” actually comes from the surname Quixote, after Cervantes’ character Don Quixote? It’s actually a word that describes the character. When you say something or somebody is quixotic, you are literally saying that it is “like Don Quixote.” I fucking love that. I love language. Man, that’s so cool.

get over it, already

we don’t come here to be grammatically correct. we have to do that at work/school/what have you. we come here to discuss food, video games, and once in a while baseball, and we don’t feel like proofreading our sentences here.

it’s one thing if you can’t even read what someone’s writing, but if it’s clear and easy enough to read, then just get over your pet peeves. there are different things that irritate all of us, but we aren’t forcing others to conform to that.

it’s one thing if you can’t even read what someone’s writing, but if it’s clear and easy enough to read, then just get over your pet peeves.

But grammar makes things clear and easy to read. Nobody is asking anybody to be perfect. Typos happen. Some people can’t spell. Some rules are too obscure to be realistically adhered to. Big whoop. It’s not a matter of proofreading. Proofreading catches mistakes. Everybody makes mistakes. Again, big whoop.

But the whole idea that a basic command grammar and style is secondary to clarity is very weird to me. Your own ability to communicate demonstrates exactly those skills, even when your keyboard is sticky or your index finger only wants to hut the y and never the t.

Now, I’m not advocating holding some kind of sitewide clinic. I’m just really surprised that so many people here are going, “What!? God damn! Don’t tell me how to write! I’ll write how I damn well please!”

It’s just a grammar thread. We’ve had them before. The antagonism in this specific one is very weird.

Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

But the whole idea that a basic command grammar and style is secondary to clarity is very weird to me. Your own ability to communicate demonstrates exactly those skills, even when your keyboard is sticky or your index finger only wants to hut the y and never the t.

The thing is, a lot of people (including myself) have good ideas that are thought-out, however they lack typical grammar skills. Should this give their comments any less clarity, if, say, they don’t capitalize their letters or use your instead of you’re? Yes, it’s going to be annoying for those who have good grammar skills to look at “your” when they intend to say “you are”, but don’t you immediately know what they meant to say, and go on with the post?

I realize we’ve had grammar threads before, and that’s actually what kind of annoyed me even further today. The regulars have discussed this not only with its own fanpost, but within 75% of the other threads, there is someone policing it and making comments. It’s annoying, is all. We get that many of you don’t like bad grammar, but for a lot of us it’s not some light switch you just turn on and go, “OK now I’m going to use proper grammar.”

STEVE HOLM! refuses to be the odd man out.

by UnleashTheGore on Oct 16, 2009 9:06 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think you’re demonstrating a perfectly fine command of the language. It doesn’t happen that often here, but there are some posts that really are semi-literate at best.

I think anything that even begins to approach the command and clarity you’re showing in your comments right now is more than enough to get by without complaint. I’m not a big fan of jumping on typos or misspellings, but I do think there is value in being at least semi-literate.

I think where this FanPost failed was in the introduction. By issuing a statement of purpose that calls out (without using names) members of the community, it became a personal thing instead of just a discussion of a topic. I honestly don’t think there’s anything wrong with just talking about this stuff. Some of us find it really interesting. And if you know that your comments can be read without inducing vomit, there’s no reason to take anything like this personally. And if you don’t know that about your comments, then maybe you should take a look at your skills.

I guess I’ve just been approaching this thread as an OT thread about a subject that interests some of us. I can see how it reads at the beginning as an entreaty to the community to suck less, and I can definitely see why that would be taken poorly. I just don’t see the point in being self-righteous about it from either end.

The last comma in a series of three or more (the comma directly preceding the final conjunction).

I went to the store, park, and convention today.

The serial comma is the one after park. Some people don’t like to use it. In 95% of cases, though, it allows for greater clarity. There are examples where it hurts clarity, but they are by far in the minority.

It's the comma used in series.

When presenting a serial list of more than two items, it is normal to use commas after each item: “John, Paul, George, and Ringo were among the most famous people of their times.”

The issue is the comma after the next-to-last item (“George” above): some people don’t put a comma there. That debated comma is called the serial comma or, because they advocate its use, the Oxford comma.

In simple series like that above, omitting that comma is just a moinor silliness; but when the members of the series are more complex, the lack can cause outright confusion—see the Wikipedia article (which is diplomatically wishy-washy on the subject), or the somewhat better article at About.com.

The obnoxious custom of omitting that comma almost certainly derives from journalism, where the tiniest space saved in a newspaper column is precious—journalism has many sins to answer for.

Of course, the easy answer for series with compound or otherwise complex members is to use semicolons instead of commas (in which case the final one is always provided).

How difficult is it to learn English, as compared to say German, or the romance languages?

And but so, I reckon English poses some obstacles to syntax/spelling/grammatical proficiency which, otherwise, folks wouldn’t stumble over.

Turns out you can spell Ugnio Vlz without 4 E's

by The Gene Hackman on Oct 16, 2009 9:33 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

For non-native speakers, English would definitely be more difficult than the Romance languages. I’m not sure about German because I’ve never studied it.

Spelling can be so arbitrary in English that even native speakers get confused doing it. Grammar’s not exact standard, but at least rules apply generally and not arbitrarily. I studied Spanish and spelling makes a lot more sense than English, though it does have gender in words which is odd. I’ve also studied Mandarin – if you look past the impossible character system (they really should switch to that pinyin alphabet officially), its grammar is actually much easier than in the Indo-European languages because you don’t have to worry about subject-verb agreement.

by Yoyo on Oct 16, 2009 9:50 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Spelling isn’t arbitrary in English. It’s just culled from so many different other languages (not just German, Arabic, Greek, and Latin, but also old and middle English… among other) that the roots and rules are easy to conflate. There really is a history to the way most every word in English are spelled. Most examples of words that do have a spelling that isn’t rooted in this way are actually spelled phonetically. So they would be the easy ones.

Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

It’s not arbitrary, but it’s not consistent either. Languages that have consistent spelling tend to be languages that were standardized (orthographically) in the modern era.

English just needs to be standardized. I nominate the Mayor to do that.

You can also do “font-size: Xem” (where X is a variable standing for a ratio… 2em would create a font twice as big as the default… 3.5em would create one three and a half times bigger. You can also scale smaller. I prefer em for some reason).

in-line coding is also really useful to know for all this crap. Unless you like having line breaks everywhere.

i grade papers for a living. therefore, i think i get to say that if it doesn’t bother me, it shouldn’t bother anyone else.

Fuzzy words reflect fuzzy thoughts.

The “aw, you know what I mean” defense is one of quite a number of shoddy defenses typically offered by those who cannot or will not trouble to express their thoughts with care. Even if one’s audience can understand sloppy language, the sloppiness nevertheless acts as a sort of “speed bump” on the road to absorbing the intent of that language. Moreover, there is a sort of “civility” argument: offering thoughts in poor language is like offering a meal on chipped, mismatched plates.

On-line assistance is not hard to find: at the usenet group alt.usage.english are numerous folk who will usually reply to queries in minutes.

And there are clear, relatively simple books available for those who care enough to pursue these matters. For usage, there is Wilson Follett’s Modern American Usage (get the original, not the one “updated” by someone else); for grammar, there is George O. Curme’s English Grammar (get the shorter “College Outline Series” edition). Each is available used for a pittance.

Remember that language is thought: even speaking only to ourselves in our own minds, we use words—the reason we can typically only remember back to age 3 or so is because that is when we typically acquire language. So when we express our thoughts in language that is sloppy, it suggests that those very thoughts are sloppy.

Anyone can make the occasional technical mistake—though grammar and usage both are a good deal more logical than some think—but fundamental errors of conception, such as singular verbs with plural subjects or vice-versa, show a less than firm grasp on the matters being spoken of.

Remember that language is thought

It’s hard to remember something that you don’t know in the first place. I’d say most people don’t think of language in this way. I know because I teach grammar and it usually takes a while to get my students to deduce this fact.

Thought is language is thought . . .

I have found that the “no memories prededing language” condition, which virtually everyone has, is helpful in clarifying that without words, we have no thoughts as the term “thought” is usually understood. Meditation and mystic states are means whereby the language-using left hemisphere of the brain is, in some way, sort of temporarily shut down, allowing direct access to the non-verbal right hemisphere—which is why subjects find it impossible to describe such states afterwards. (That’s an oversimplification, but it gets to the base idea.)

People who don’t realize that language and thought are synonymous will often be sloppy with both.

Probably not, but it does amuse me.

Your misspelling of L’Académie française is hilarious.

But what was your point, if not to be a dick?

by FreshStart on Oct 17, 2009 11:49 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That’s an interesting comeback, considering that I clearly know how to spell “L’Académie française” (stole that from your post) and did so successfully but for an accent and a curlicue. These are things that do not generally appear on American made keyboards. I deemed them to be not worth my time. It appears that you did not draw the same conclusion.

You are more obtuse than a speed bump. Carry on.

Just repent already.

Really, “unrepentant”?

Ya know...ignorance really IS bliss.
Well - I do , anyway.

Unrepentant

adj. Having or exhibiting no remorse.

Remorse is a synonym of regret, guilt, shame and self-reproach. As commonly defined, unrepentant simply means “feeling no shame.” It’s hardly an overstatement.

Also, ‘unrepentant dick’ sounds funny.

If I commit a crime and am called for it and refuse to admit or apologize then I am indeed unrepentant.

You posted , he pointed out a perceived error , you accused him of not admitting to a crime he had not been called for. The series of events just seemed odd.
Now if after he’s called a dick and still insists on his position then he’s being unrepentant – but in the above that hadn’t happened yet.

Ya know...ignorance really IS bliss.
Well - I do , anyway.

His dickitude is what has not been repented. I’ll admit a logical error, here; I assumed that he would not apologize for being a dick. This turned out to be the correct assumption, but was not necessarily correct at the time of my insult. I retract the adjective and leave only the ‘dick’ portion of my sentence.

I’ll insist into my grave that “You are a dick that no one will remember” just doesn’t have the same zing.

If language is thought

or if language is culture
or if language is expression
or if language is “living”

The French Academy is a brilliant example of social control. While some lingual and dialect variance does exist even within France, the state/elite control of the French language is often cited by social scientists as a key element in the creation of the French state and empire. An element that was “acceptable” then, but soon after the nationalist turn became an unacceptable means of (Western) state building – see Spain and its lingual and regional diversity for an example of several “nations” in a single state.

Immortals also get a sword. So that’s sweet.

I have never understood why some people are proud of their bad grammar. I do understand that at times you simply need to communicate your thoughts quickly, but so many get so defensive if they are called out on their mistakes. They act like it is their right to have bad grammar and that they come on the internet to let it out. We are not Youtube, we try to communicate with each other clearly and are all internet friends, so why not communicate in the clearest way possible.
Also good grammar is not elitism, or anyone trying to hold intelligence over anyone else, grammar just makes talking through writing that much easier.

This also reminds me of a comment made by a woman who was a prostitute on a blog that no longer exists. She was on vacation in Hawaii once in a sightseeing boat. Whenever that bird was spotted, someone would call out ‘booby!’, and she would bust out laughing every time.
