About Molina

About Molina:

Some naughty children on the internet have been foaming at their dirty mouths about the season Bengie Molina just had.  They don’t understand that he was one of the most valuable Giants this season.  The Giants were a pitching and defense team.  Molina was the cornerstone of that team.  He was the leader in the clubhouse and on the field.  Everyone looked to him.  The children are distraught that he didn’t lead a prime offense also.  Like most children, they want everything.

Molina’s time is now over.  He was a cancer on the offense.  Even Sabean noted that some of the players might be copying Molina’s undisciplined approach at the plate.  If the Giants are to move forward they must cut ties to Molina.  It would be wrong to keep him even in a part-time role.

So how will his loss affect the Giants in 2010?  The chemistry of the team will change, most likely for the worse because they had excellent team spirit this year.  With Winn also leaving, the defense will be worse but it also was at a high level this year.  No doubt the pitching will decline from the excellent level of this year.  Ah but the hitting will improve, perhaps a great deal.  The cancer will be removed.  Will it improve enough to make up for the losses in the other departments?  Probably not.  It would have to improve a great deal to match the 88 wins of this season.  2010 will be a true rebuilding year, changing from an all pitching and defense team to one with more balance.

It will be interesting.

I can’t tell if this is a post saying we need to bring Bengie (and apparently Winn?) back despite what the “children” say or if this is a post saying we need to move on or if this post is actually saying anything at all.

Molina really isn’t that good of a defender and whatever intangibles he brings to the table are far outweighed by his horrendous offense.

Also, he was a big crybaby that refused to make adjustments on offense. He created the impression that he wouldn’t play hurt b/c it was a contract year…until Posey got here, that is. How that makes him a clubhouse leader, is beyond me. Other leaders will emerge anyway.

In any event, Lincecum and Cain and Sanchez won’t suck in 2010 b/c Molina isn’t there. Posey, who should start, will be significantly better than Molina. he may not be a clubhouse leader in his first year, but eventually he will be b/c he’ll be a stud.

I disagree with your first paragraph. I agree with parts of your second paragraph.

But mostly I just disagree with your use of the extra space between sentences.

I’m a one-spacer, too. I had an english teacher once who “required” two spaces. At first I thought I would forget and have to go through and add a ton of spaces. Then I remembered the magic of the replace function.

Either is acceptable. Microsoft Word’s grammar check function can be set to check for either double or single spaces depending on what your preference is.

by Missing Barry on Oct 15, 2009 6:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Do not trust MS Word. The MS Word dictionary doesn’t recognize bachelorette as a word. Meanwhile, it has a ton of flat out misspelling programmed in. For instance: it believes that knowledgably is a word. Oops.

Your college teachers were dumb, then. The two spaces thing is archaic, stylistically absurd, and forces you to do more work that will inevitably suffer from inconsistent use.

It makes no sense. Most style guides don’t recognize it anymore. It only even ever existed because of technological limitations with early typing machines. Does that apply anymore? No.

Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

Yea, I never saw the point in it. They fed us some bogus reasoning as well which I can’t even recall at this point.

by deuce deuce on Oct 15, 2009 7:50 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I prefer two spaces. I like the way it looks. I think we both know how ridiculous the “more work” argument is…

by Missing Barry on Oct 15, 2009 7:52 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know it’s not really more work. I’d bet dollars to cents, though, that for every ten sentences you double space, you get at least one that slips in single spaced. It’s an absurd rule based on a need that hasn’t applied to printing in more than 20 years. I think it’s time to say goodbye.

I won’t argue that you think it looks better. But I think that people are inclined to think that the way they do something looks better to begin with. For instance, I’m a fan of the serial comma, and I’ve always used the serial comma, and I think that the reasoning for using the serial comma is more sound than the reasoning for not using it. And I used to like the way the serial comma looks more.

But at my editing job, our house style is to only use the serial comma when clarity is a serious issue. As a result, I see 100 sentences a day where I have to actively look for no serial comma. I write 100 sentences a day where I have to omit the serial comma. Now, I actually think sentences look better without it. Because that’s what I’m used to seeing. But I know that not using it is wrong, and I know the second I leave this job and start using it regularly again that I’ll start to like the way it looks again.

Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

by howtheyscored on Oct 15, 2009 7:58 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh and I agree, I just don’t see any real reason to stop it. I also don’t consider it a rule as much as just a personal preference. It’s not like I’m upset or anything if I ever miss it (though I do think I miss it far less often than you’d expect).

by Missing Barry on Oct 15, 2009 8:17 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well that’s perfectly reasonable, and I don’t begrudge you your preferences. You’d probably be surprised by how many times I’ve been argued about it by people who honestly believe that it’s a requirement and that it’s how things need to be to be correct. I think I was responding far more to those people than you.

Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

by howtheyscored on Oct 15, 2009 8:21 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I’d agree that those people are unreasonable. I gave it some more thought, and I realized I basically never miss double spacing my sentences. You’d be surprised – as I pointed out earlier MS Word can check for it if you set it to (which I have) and I easily go whole papers without making the mistake once. Once it’s a habit it’s pretty easy to get right…

by Missing Barry on Oct 16, 2009 8:37 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I love this site and it’s in-depth discussions of grammar, syntax, and usage. I especially enjoy any discussion over serial commas.

Now Walter, I know you post on Fangraphs a bit, so I think you’ll appreciate what I’m about to do. Just going strictly by WAR (which has it’s issues, but we’ll ignore that for now), Giants who were more valuable than Molina: Tim Lincecum. Matt Cain. Brian Wilson. Barry Zito. Jonathan Sanchez. Pablo Sandoval. Juan Uribe. Andres Torres. Aaron Rowand. Randy Winn.

What Is Wrong With So Many Of You?

Can’t you recognize when someone is basicly agreeing with you?

The author is saying that even though Bengie helped the Giants win 88 games in 2009 keeping him for for 2010 would be a mistake becuase it would block the Giants from making the improvements then need to make to get beyond 88 wins. The author is saying the Gaints need to walk away from Bengie’s leadership if they are going to start drawing more walks. The author is saying the Giants need to let Molina go even if doing so results in some regression for the Giants pitching and defense in 2010 that results in fewer wins in 2010.

Why are so many of you bitching about this? This meaning should be pretty clear to anyone that actually bothered to read with an effort to understand what that author wrote.

Ah, and what if we still have disagreements after your clarification? I personally disagree on things like how much Bengie contributed to the Giants winning 88 games, how much “leadership” he provides (and even if he did, how much that impacts how many games the Giants won), that Bengie leaving will cause any regression in the Giants pitching and defense (as baetown pointed out they’re likely to regress whether Bengie leaves or stays)….

Agreeing with the point that we don’t need Bengie back doesn’t mean we agree with every point in the post…. :)

For what it's worth

Bengie Molina was NOT a bad offensive player in 2009.

.442 SLG from a catcher is legitimately good (3rd in the league) and his bat would play on several teams despite the poor OBP.

He’s just not good enough pay $6M when our top prospect plays the same position. (I hope)

by sfmaynard on Oct 16, 2009 5:27 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

The problem is that his SLG is the only decent aspect of his offense, and even then it’s not that great. Sure, you’d be able to mask that production in a lineup like that of the Yankees or Phillies, but it’s still rather poor overall for any position player, even at catcher.

I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. 45 C’s got 200+ PA’s this season. Bengie Molina was the 25th best hitter of that group this season (going by wOBA, which is a better stat than OBP, SLG or OPS). He was a bad offensive player in 2009. That’s a fact.
