Yet Another Open Letter to the Giants
Dear Giants,
Eugenio Velez cannot hit left-handed pitching. He was unable to hit left-handed pitching in the minors, and he's been unable to hit it in the majors. Considering this, and considering that he isn't Ryan Howard against right-handed pitchers, he should not start for the Giants at any position.
Also, Velez's second half wasn't as good as you think it was.
Sincerely,
McCovey Chronicles

Football does not encourage intelligent discussion. It’s almost total resistance to any kind of useful statistical measures is a good indicator of that. Things are getting a little bit better though.

That said, NinersNation often surpasses my expectation for intelligent discussion, and the work that Fooch does to include STATS as an accepted and acceptable part of the site is admirable.

I always assumed that the blog authors’ style/personality would dictate what type of community would form, but NN dissuaded me of that notion. Fooch is a calm, intelligent, and well reasoned person, but so many people there are illiterate fucksticks.

I think the community will even out over time. NinersNation right now is kind of in that “15 FanPosts a Day” phase that we had, what, a year or two ago. As (IF) people there become more comfortable with their status in a community of posters, they’ll probably put more effort into trying to uphold the quality of that community.
At least, that’s my hope. We didn’t have the benefit over there of the slow-burn growth that McCC had at the beginning. But I think Fooch does a good enough job and is bringing in good enough people to help him with content and moderation that it will eventually pay off.
Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

Personally
I think stuff like FO is bullshit. I have no problem with looking at the game a new way, but I don’t buy that they’ve figured that new way out yet. They’ve done some good stuff, but a lot of what I read doesn’t seem very reliable.
i think it’s mostly the nature of the game- it’s pretty hard to tabulate a sport that has 22 moving parts on every play

Bullshit how? I agree that FO has its limitations and does some things that I don’t really agree with, but I honestly don’t see how it’s not the most reliable statistical hub for the NFL.
It’s the best in a substandard group, yeah, but that’s not the point. Give me something better and I’ll start paying attention to that.
Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

It doesn’t have the stats like FO does, but it’s got much better analysis of the game and FO’s stats are really arbitrary anyways. They also have apparently zero predictive value.

they might have zero predictive value
but if they do, so do all NFL stats. I think the first step is to establish “value” stats before you even worry about prediction.

I don’t know why BL doesn’t like it, but the biggest question I’ve had was someone saying that from 6 yards out of the end zone, a team is expected to score a touchdown. I’ve seen enough Niners games in recent years to find that a questionable statment, and I understand that’s somehow taken from DVOA. Too many of the things I’ve seen people say regarding DVOA make me furl my brow.
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.
by JRPhillips on Oct 16, 2009 3:49 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
it's not rocket surgery
take all NFL plays since 1998 or so (when they started producing play-by-play logs).
Count the number of times a team was on it’s opponent’s 6 yard line.
Count the number of touchdowns they score.
Divide the 2nd by the first and you will get the the % of time a team is expected to score a touchdown from the 6.

Because they are making you realize that Brian Sabean’s brilliance in roster construction is so immense that you will never be able to surpass it as long as you live. You may spend your time learning about baseball, and you may spend your time trying to grow as an observer and fan, but you will never be able to match Brian Sabean. If baseball is the one thing that you truly love, you’ll never be truly great in any sense at it. There is nothing more that you can do here to be great, and there is no knowledge or skill you can acquire that will make this better. The baseball world has passed you by, and you know it. Pretty insightful article from Baggs re: Carney
"At some point, guys have to take responsibility for not doing that. That’s one thing I stressed to the guys – Step up and be responsible for yourself. Guys at the big league level, by the time they get there, should know how to do that stuff – move runners, get a guy home from third with less than two outs. If guys are learning that at the big league level, it’s too late. A major league player should not be as poor at it as we were in my two years.
This pretty much sums up this organization and makes me incredibly sad at the same time.

Velez is Fred Lewis 2.0 without the walks
It’s amazing how bad Sabean is at learning from his mistakes.
Last year at this time Sabean was convinced that a 27 year old outfielder who was always too old for his league in the minors, always bad defensively, always struck out too much, and, although fast, never learned how to use it should take over the easiest position in baseball to find an offensive improvement
by NateEveryday on Oct 15, 2009 1:36 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
You underrate Lewis, but yeah, this is exactly right, and Eugenio has an excellent chance to become next year’s official scapegoat as Fred was this year.
by Evan on Oct 15, 2009 1:39 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I didn't mean to come off like I hate Lewis
in fact I bet he would have had a much better year if they just made Lewis the lead-off hitter this year instead of trying their genius plan of making him more aggresive and thinking that he’s a power hitter,
Why they thought a guy who never hit more then 12 homers in the minors, and was always old for the league he was playing in was gonna be a power hitter is beyond me.

Not sure I agree
Ricky Henderson he is not, but I love watching Velez play. And he seems to do pretty well in the clutch…well, not all the time, but there’s spark to this kid. I’ll never forget Velez landing on his hip at second, and with just one out needed to win (Wilson blew it), he refused to leave the game. I also no longer believe in Schierholtz, mostly because I was at game 3 when he struck out in the 9th with the tying run on 3rd against the Rockies.

Playing hurt is usually dumb. It hurts the team in the short term because you’re less effective, and it hurts it in the long term because you’re at a higher risk for a worse injury. So much for being a team player; it turns out you’re just a selfish jackass with hyperactive desire to be tough.

Not really.
There was constant caterwauling from 1988 on about how O’Neill should be traded to make room first for Hal Morris (an OF prospect at the time), then later Reggie Sanders as O’Neill’s BA did a slow fade from a .270 to a .240 over that span.

Not only is this lineup a real possibility
but is also incredibly right handed. From the 4th spot down is all right handed.
The only lefty’s are switch hitters.
I know AT&T can be rough on left handed power hitters, but the Giants might want to be smart and get 1 or 2 lefthanded guys for their lineup.
I know it seems like a signature Sabean signing, but Carlos Delgado seems like a good fit this year. He probably wouldn’t stay healthy, and he sucks defensively, but he can hit. Something I seriously doubt about Uribe. Since Uribe of all people is going to block the Giants from looking to improve first or third base.
Plus Jeremy Hermida could be had very easily from the Marlins. He’s patient, solid defensively, got some pop and is only 25. Do ya think Sabean is smart enough to get him.

I want him to work on: stealing bags, not getting picked off, learning how to play a ball off the wall, knowing which bag to throw to in the infield, spraying the ball to all fields, no more HR hacks, work deep into counts, bunt off a tee.
Basically be a totally different player.

He will never be a great base stealer – he has a high top end but poor acceleration off the line.
Utter frustration and futility.

Velez, your 2010 starting left fielder...
who doesn’t do anything particularly well, but gets the starting job b/c he had one hot streak.

Why should he learn how to bunt? He can’t bunt for a hit; it takes him too long to get out of the box. People have this idea that Velez is fast, and I guess he is, in the sense that I bet he’s really fast in, say, the 100 meter dash. But baserunning involves much shorter distances than that, and Eugenio takes for-e-ver to get going. He’s not fast when it comes to baseball, and I’m rather skeptical that he ever will be. If he’s 27 and hasn’t improved his technique to this point, why should we expect it to happen now?

he always reminds me of those old cartoons where the character would spin their legs in a cloud of dust before they got going.

The “Bunt off a tee” saying is obviously sarcastic. How does one bunt off a tee? You don’t. My whole point is that he seems to be really raw and needs to become better at the basics. You know, the stuff a player would learn when they are about 11-15 years old.
