Estimated Salaries

I have been looking through the Giants roster, their payroll and lists of free agents to determine what moves the Giants could actually make when seriously taking into regard payroll (trade for A-rod!!1!)

So I wanted to see what some of you estimate that the following possible free agents, that the Giants MIGHT be after, might make next season if they were to sign in SF.

Again this is just a list of possible FAs that the Giants might go after in. This is in no way my wish list, so dont curse me out because someone like Dye is on here. Just curious what some of your estimations are for their salaries next year, if they were to sign with us.

Nick Johnson is noticeably absent from that list and I’m pretty curious to see what the market for him will look like

good call

Just added him in. dont know how I forgot him cuz I think hes actually one of the main guys the giants WILL go after.

by kvdp12 on Oct 14, 2009 7:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Wouldn’t it seem more likely that Nick Johnson is the exact sort of player the Giants will not go after. So much of his value is tied to a stat that is not valued by the organization.

by W8ingForATitle on Oct 14, 2009 7:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Both Neukom and Sabean have talked about the importance of on base percentage since the season ended. What happens with Nick Johnson will be very interesting with regards to seeing if they’re going to practice what they preach or if they’re just full of shit.

I would lean toward full of shit.

I think winners let it go. I think losers dwell on it and talk about it all week and that screws you up for the next opportunity going forward." - Mike Singletary after the 49ers loss to the Vikings

I should add that the other sign would be their desire to re-sign Bengie Molina. If they’re serious about improving OBP they really have to let him walk, which would really be the first time he walks since they signed him!

It’s not like Sabean has never mentioned OBP in the past. He says it just to try to calm the fans down that realize his shortcomings. His actions are clear enough to show he doesn’t value it properly.

Norchika Aoki and Justin D… I think Justin D will come cheap after the loss of his last season imagine him in the 4 or 5 slot.

Aoki’s a Japanese player who’s put up some pretty good numbers, so that’s understandable. Justin D is Duchscherer, and you should probably know who he is (A’s pitcher who is hitting free agency this offseason).

I could see Duscherer going for something like 2/10 with most of the money coming from incentives.

Sabean made some comments about spending all available financial resources on offense. I don’t think he’ll be looking for a pitcher until very late in the offseason, and when he does, he’ll be looking for a bargain. Unfortunately, that’s how our team operates. I try to be optimistic, but the negativism slowly seeps back in. They’ll upgrade the offense next year, and then wonder why the pitching wasn’t as good.

Anyone know how the posting thing works for NPB?

I gander we would have to pay whatever’s left of his contract, and some sort of kickback to the Swallows, but is there some formal system of submitting bids?

Also, has anyone heard if Aoki wants to cross the ocean?

by grape on Oct 14, 2009 9:54 PM PDT up reply actions

The only players on there I even sort of want are Nady, Aoki, Delgado and Johnson. Most of them play terrible defense, are too expensive, or are pitchers who want a (also possibly too expensive) multi-year deal that I wouldn’t give them. I don’t know why you put V-Mart up there; he’s got a 2010 club option with the BoSox for $7.7M and he’s the starting catcher next year.

by quincy0191 on Oct 14, 2009 11:51 PM PDT reply actions

I don’t think Nady will even be ready for 2010 until after the all-star break. I could be wrong though.

I’m not entirely sold on Nady anyway; I’d rather pick up Johnson (give Garko a contract too and see if you can trade him) and fill the OF spots with Bowker, Schierholtz, and Torres (although we all know Rowand is going to be playing over Torres).

by quincy0191 on Oct 15, 2009 10:13 AM PDT up reply actions

And Torres will be playing over Bowker. Bowker will be in Fresno to start. There’s no room for him with Velez/Torres, the leadoff twoheaded monster.

by sfoakbay on Oct 15, 2009 5:51 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree with keeping Garko even if you sign Johnson. Nick Johnson ain’t playing 162 games, and Garko is a useful righthanded bat off the bench. Maybe if he goes to spring training with the Giants’ next year, he can become one of Bochy’s boys. Just bring him coffee every morning and maybe throw in a massage. Only give a happy ending though if he promises you a starting job. Protip: Just try to read what I wrote without actually picturing it.

by daveinexile on Oct 17, 2009 10:18 AM PDT up reply actions

I think Schierholtz can be an everyday starter if he learns to stop swinging at that inside breaking pitch. He can hit .300 with a couple homers, steal a few bases, and play great defense in that enormous RF. He’s got an absolute cannon, and if you’re going to give a full season of PAs to Bowker, who could potentially be a high-AVG/OBP/HR hitter with defensive liabilities and no speed, you can justify giving a full season of PAs to Schierholtz, who could be a high-AVG/SB/XBH hitter with good defense and speed.

by quincy0191 on Oct 16, 2009 11:51 PM PDT up reply actions

I would really like to see them to start working him inot CF a bit more. He might be able to provide compent defense there for a bit.

by daveinexile on Oct 17, 2009 10:19 AM PDT up reply actions

I’ve commented before that playing CF is the only way I see Schierholtz making it as a major leaguer.

by taliesin on Oct 19, 2009 9:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Personally I’m not convinced Nady will ever play again. This is his second Tommy John surgery on that elbow. But assuming everything goes perfectly for him, he might be ready to start the season. Normally they say recovery time is 12-14 months, but he has said that he could be ready to play nine months after the surgery, which was July 8.

If he does get healthy quickly, he could wind up being a good bargain.

by taliesin on Oct 15, 2009 1:50 PM PDT up reply actions

He might even take less to sign with the Giants because their offense is so bad he knows he can easily win a starting job.

Id really like to see the giants try and acquire a Righty reliever

I think Runzler has done well enough to be on the opening day roster along with Affeldt, so I think we are set with Lefties.

But id like to see them go after another righty to replace Howry. Hawkins and Betancourt are type A’s (eww). Theres also JJ Putz and Takashi Sato who might both ask for over 5 mil.

by kvdp12 on Oct 15, 2009 12:00 PM PDT reply actions

We should offer Howry arbitration. He projects as a Type B, so just offer the lowest arb salary possible; if he takes it, we get a good deal, if he doesn’t, we get a pick.

I’d really like us to avoid spending money on any relievers. We need to use the money elsewhere and our bullpen is fine. Just look for a couple of interesting minor league contracts like we did last year.

by GiantFan on Oct 16, 2009 3:45 AM PDT up reply actions

the only reliever we’re losing is Howry, and I’m sure we can find a minor leaguer who can pitch in middle innings and give up walkoff homeruns. I would think Joe Martinez would fill that bill pretty well. I actually like Martinez as a middle reliever because I think he has “once through the lineup” type stuff.

No 2B?

Shouldn’t Sanchez, Adam Kennedy, Felipe Lopez, and Akinori Iwamura be on here? The Giants sound as if they’re sold on Sanchez (which is dumb) but one way or another it does look nearly certain that they’re going to sign a FA 2B.

by taliesin on Oct 15, 2009 1:54 PM PDT reply actions

And I dont see them going for Kennedy or the others over Velez who they also seem to be in love with.

I don’t understand why Sabean seems so committed to Sanchez; you lost Alderson on a terrible trade, don’t make it worse by trying to make up for previous mistakes. I’d love for the Giants to pick up Iwamura if they can’t resign Sanchez, and they obviously don’t need to overpay.

Well I hope they at least have somebody in the organization who can tell that Velez cannot be the everyday answer at 2B. Playing him there in late-game situations after a double-switch or pinch hitter has replaced the regular guy? OK. Somebody gets injured and you need a starter for a day or two? Dodgy, but OK. Eugenio Velez, opening day starter at second base? Pretty far from OK.

by taliesin on Oct 15, 2009 5:01 PM PDT up reply actions

I like Sanchez and hope the Giants can work out something sensible with him. Eight million is ridiculous but I’d like to see him back next year. If the Giants’ can acquire a legit power hitter and bat Sanchez, Sandoval, legit power hitter, and Nick Johnson consecutively, I think they have a chance for a decent offense.

There aren’t too many legit power hitters on the market outside of Bay and Holliday, who will both cost too much, and adding Johnson and resigning Sanchez pretty much limits your options to corner outfielders. Picking up a guy like Jonny Gomes sounds great to me, though; he posted a .541 SLG last year and the Reds don’t even want him from what I’ve heard. Some people have even suggested they’ll non-tender him.

by quincy0191 on Oct 16, 2009 2:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Also, I’d go Leadoff, Johnson, Sanchez, Sandoval, Power Hitter. Gotta have your high-OBP guys in the top of the lineup, otherwise your AVG and HR guys can’t drive ’em in.

Plan for a legitimate team

-Offer arbitration to Molina and Howry
-Let Freddy Sanchez Walk
-Trade Jonathan Sanchez and Merkin Valdez for Dan Uggla
- Sign 1 of the following LF, try in order 1st: Holliday, 2nd: Bay, 3rd:Dye(1 year until Carl Crawford hit FA next year)
- resign Penny or sign Harden/Duscherer
- resign Uribe

1. Rowand CF
2. Schierholtz RF
3. Sandoval 3B
4. Holliday/Bay/Dye LF
5. Uggla 2B
6. Garko 1B
7. Posey C
8. Renteria SS

1. Whiteside/Molina C
2. Uribe 3B/SS
3. Torres OF
4 &5. Ishikawa 1B and Velez 2B/OF
or
4&5. Bowker 1B/OF and Burris 2B/SS

Lincecum
Zito
Cain
Penny/Harden/Ducsherer
Martinez (until Bumgarner)

Wilson
Affeldt
Romo
Runzler
Howry/Miller
Medders
Joaquin

I don’t understand why you’d let F. Sanchez walk and then trade J. Sanchez for Uggla (who’ll cost a similar amount). Uggla may be better than F. Sanchez but the difference is less than than between J. Sanchez and Martinez.

I like Uggla as a player but i don’t understand trading for him when there’s such a good free agent market for 2B.

Why Uggla vs Fred Sanchez?

I do agree ( with GaintFan) getting Uggla and leaving him at 2nd means you needs an Ozzie Smith type fielder at SS, the new Kieth Hernandez at first and a young Mike Cammron type in CF if you want to even pretend you’re trying for the post season. Uggla’s wOBA would give the Giants almost league average offense from first base. Screw his resale value he belongs in a corner spot with his range anyways.

Who’s brain did you bring me?
Brain SabeanOranother.

by daveinexile on Oct 16, 2009 10:55 AM PDT up reply actions

I want Uggla as a power/middle of the order hitter at a premium position(2b) unlike the FA options out there. More importantly, I trust sabean to sign a #4 starter a lot more than I trust his evaluation of a middle of the order hitter. I think the likelihood of getting a duchscherer or penny or harden or even Tim hidson for a lower price for 1 yr at our park is far more likely than signing a FA difference making hitter.

by krukkuipandclint on Oct 16, 2009 3:39 PM PDT up reply actions

If Uggla was viewed as legit 2nd baseman, defensively, he would have already need traded .

He has only been on the market the last 2 or 3 winters and as many pennat chases yet nothing has happened. If you have another reason for his not being traded for I am open to hearing it.
