Yeah, Ryan Garko is not +5 defending first baseman. You all know the story, not actually as bad a hitter as he looked with the Giants, but still a far cry from what you'd want out of first base. Garko would be the slowest player on any team that didn't already have Bengie Molina.

On Uribe pending 3 year contract:
I think our best hope is the Phillies. His being able to cover 2nd, SS & 3rd would make their life MUCH easier and in that band box his power numbers should climb. Of course that leaves the Giants’ without a plan B as SS … again but I like it better than the 3 year contract.

Evertt played 900+ innings at SS this season with a UZR/150 of 9.7 and was paid $1MM for 1 years. He also was 9 points lower wOBA then Renteria this year. Are there any takers (or tire kickers) on the 33 year old for $2MM or under to play SS at least half the time next year?
There is also Alex Cora, Crosby, Khalie Greene and if the M’s use the buy out Jack Wilson in the not costing a draft pick in the SS help bin.

AARRRGGG!
Actually I don’t mind Uribe for a couple years under $6-$7M total. I just see where he would fit very well with a lot of other clubs and hate the idea of just handing him 3rd base and a Dave Roberts like contract. This franchise is not THAT talent broke any more to justify that level of Bavasi "think".
For those that forgot I liked the idea of chaseing Uribe last off season but the team might as well go after Everett (for 1-2 years and ~$4MM max total) or 1-2 years of Jack Wilson for a couple years if we are looking Dave Roberts type money.

I have the feeling that it’s all going to end in tears with Uribe. He did great this year but it’d be silly to ignore the fact that he was a replacement level player the previous two seasons. I’m fine with bringing him back as a bench player for $1-2M but i feel we’d regret giving him a reasonable contract or expecting him to start.

Yeah, I’d love to see Uribe back on the bench, he earned that. Maybe 2.5 M/yr even, but not as a starter. Even if he’s close to the 09’ Uribe, he makes the bench deeper. I don’t want to see Rohlinger, or Frandsen.

The list of pitches that Pablo swings at is very long. The only one I really wish he would lay off of is that inside fastball above his hands. Of course, if the pitcher misses the location on that one, he smokes it.

Matt Downs Mention !!
Is Matt Downs the savior of this middle infield ? No, but he does have the potential to be a league average infielder. His MLB numbers this year in very small samle size, were awful. But if you look at his numbers anywhere he has gotten a chance to adjust to the league, he seems to do very well, if not excel. Not a HR hitter, but a high average, high OBP, doubles hitter would come in handy with this offense. Oh…wait…. Sabean already traded for a guy like that.

With less than a full season in 3A over two years (131 Games), It’s not that depressing.
Considering the 2009 Giants team totals were .257/ .309 /.389 /.699
Matt Downs MLE comes in at .245 /.276/ .388 / .664 with 31 doubles and 13 HR’s.

I’m sorry but that’s incredibly depressing.
Not the numbers themselves necessarily but that we’ve fallen to the state where an .664 OPS is described as “not that depressing”.
Downs seems very much like Frandsen to me, both are probably replacement level players and ok fill-ins /bench players but neither should be starting or getting many AB for a major league team.
Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!

When the major league team averages .669 OPS it is not that depressing. The Giants farm system ( with the exception of Gerald ) is not full of serious hitting prospects.
Look, I’m not here to state that Matt Downs is the savior of the infield, but he does have the potential to be a solid replacement player, a utility guy, or a back up. The guy was drafted essentially as a 23 year old after the JC/Oklahoma transfer. He was a pitcher primarily until his senior year at Oklahoma.
Small Sample Size applies here. This is not Todd Linden with 2,000 MiLB at bats.
If you remove the 22 games he played in 2008 after coming up from San Jose, his MLE for 2009 .261/ .292/ .411/ .730 is better than half of the Giants rostered players in 2009.
What other 3A infielder should be getting at bats ? Eugenio Velez ?

I don’t know, it’d say the fact that the major league averages a .669 OPS is pretty depressing. Also I’m guessing that is a typo as the major league team had a .699 OPS.
I wasn’t meaning to be critical of Downs, I like him, it’s just a shame that he’s arguably the best internal candidate we have.
What other 3A infielder should be getting at bats ?
None of them. They’re all ok as utility players (and i’m fine with Downs in that role) but none of them should be starting. We’ll sign an external 2B to start (probably Sanchez) and that’s the correct decision to make.

While you may be right about some of these guys developing into decent utility infielders, and that would be great, it’s not the time for that, or what the team needs right now to win. Unfortunately Sabean and Boch did not agree, and pissed away the last 3-4 years of properly evaluating these players, especially F.Lew.
We need to spend a bit, trade a Bumgarner, and go for it right now with the SP’s and Bullpen that we have.
Ishikawa is not going to be good, he’s one that I think it’s safe to say, we’ve seen enought of.
Schierholtz is not going to be anything more than a 5th OF.
Burriss can’t hit, or use his speed properly, and his glove isn’t good enough to waste anymore time developing.
Frandsen is probably not coming back, and frankly has never looked comfortable at the big league level.
I’m OK with keeping a cheap, controllable Garko around for at least one more season, but I don’t think the Giants will.
Bowker, Rohlinger, and Downs have not had enough of a look yet, but none of them looks like anything special in what I’ve seen of them. Hopefully I’m wrong about all of this.

I really don’t get the F-Lew love here. Yes, it was wonderful to see a guy work a count, but he looked lost in the field and at the plate for a good two months before he was benched. I don’t know what his UZR was by the end of the season, but he failed the eyeball test more than any OF’er in recent memory…including Eugenio.

by Johnny Disaster on Oct 11, 2009 6:52 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Actually, the season was barely 2 months old when he got benched. He was a starter in April and May, with the following lines:
.299 / .420 / .403
.258 / .340 / .438
His only really bad months came in June (when he had half as many plate appearances as he’d had in May – in other words, he was in the process of being benched already) and September (when he got a whopping 20 plate appearances, so, you know, not very meaningful).
And I’m always baffled by people saying Lewis is or appears to be the worst outfielder they can remember seeing. Have you people never watched Adam Dunn, or Jason Bay, or Raul Ibanez, or Pat Burrell, or Chris Duncan, or Manny Ramirez? Even if you don’t know anything about UZR, there are so many outfielders who look much worse out there than Lewis ever does.

Among 19 MLB catchers with at least 400 at-bats
Molina was 11th in batting average, 16th in OBP, 8th in SLG, 12th in OPS, dead last in walks, 6th in home runs, 11th in extra base hits, seventh in GIDP, and 18h in BB/K ratio. If you want to be, “BUT RBIS!!!!” he wasn’t even one of the best there, despite being the only one hitting cleanup: he was in 6th place, behind Victor Martinez, Joe Mauer, Brian McCann, Kurt Suzuki, and Jorge Posada.
And if you say he was only behind them in RBIs because they played for better hitting teams, congratulations: you’ve discovered why RBIs are a bad stat for evaluating individual performance.
So no, he didn’t put up some of the best catcher numbers of the year. In categories where he was bad, he was among the worst. In categories where he was good, he didn’t crack the top five.

And if your argument is that he’s clutch, consider this:
Molina was a .314 / .325 / .593 hitter leading off innings.
Bases empty, he was .255 / .278 / .442
With runners on? .275 / .291 / .442
With RISP? .260 / .286 / .429
With RISP and two out? .189 / .231 / .297
Even if you believe there’s such a thing as clutch, and even if you don’t have a problem with small sample size shenanigans, there’s really no evidence he was clutch this year.

4th lowest cERA and PB among qualifiers.
Dude said “catcher numbers” not “hitter numbers”. Jeez, it’s like people around here see “Molina” and their reading comprehension just flies out the window.

I’m assuming that “catcher numbers” means numbers for a catcher. I guess you can take it either way, though.

Don’t know why you wouldn’t expect Ishikawa to get better. I’m not saying he’ll be a great hitter by any means, but it was his first full year in the majors and he’ll be 26 until the end of next year plus he was jerked around by Bochy. If given a full opportunity I’d expect him to hit for a bit more power as he learns the league and refines his approach and hopefully get close to 100 OPS+, which, if you combine it with his defense would make him much more valuable.
Unfortunately, I doubt the Giants will show much more patience with the guy and continue to give him 300 something at bats in a platoon (he was fairly respectable against righties) if they can’t get a regular 1st baseman or decide not to move Pablo there full time if they land a full time 3b.

a 100 OPS+ from a platoon 1B is sub-par, even with great defense.

He’s got such a nice looking swing and is somewhat patient, yet he’ got zero pop for his size and swing, and strikes out a lot. I just don’t see what more he can adjust. I think he’d make a fine bench player/defensive replacement, but I’d rather see them upgrade-and-or-move Pablo and keep Garko as the bench 1B. But I don’t value D from 1B as high as other spots. (I would even welcome Dunn to play 1B).

I think the pop will come around
He is still young, learning pitchers and how to be a major league hitter, etc. Especially, his home/away splits suggest to me that he can do better next year as he gets more comfortable. Before the season I predicted that fans would HATE Ishi, because he wouldn’t hit for anything at home and all his power would come on the road. I think we see the opposite of that, and also a pretty big factor in the giants horrible road record this year. One might think that some of that split difference is due to games in Petco (right) and Dodger Stadium (not so right). And clearly we can see some BABiP issues at work in both directions (Total BABiP was .330).
Home: PA 191 .349/ .400/ .535/ .935 BABiP: 424 HR: 7
Away: PA 172 .162/ .250/ .221/ .471 BABiP: 219 HR: 2
Dodger Stadium: PA 17 .286/ .412/ .357/ .769
Petco PA 23 .100 .217 .100 .317
In any case, going forward if Ishi can post a NOT HORRIBLE OPS on the road, we could see that OPS creep up to 100 and above. And on BA on balls not in play, I still expect more dingerz on the road.

Kinda funny how that worked out with his home/road splits, since he seemed like exactly the sort of player who would get demolished by AT&T Park — basically J.T. Snow all over again. I’d bet money he’ll have better numbers on the road than at home next season.

Bochy managed a lot of things badly last year but I’m not sure how he jerked around Ishikawa who got pretty decent playing time against LH throughout. I think Ishikawa is pretty much what we’ve seen from him, a terrible hitter and a great defensive player. He might improve but there doesn’t seem to be much evidence that he will.

Ishi’s minor-league record gives me hope that he can get his OBP up a bit. Even in his lost years of 2006-07, he was still drawing walks. Of course, his batting average is probably due to dip, so it may all even out.
by Evan on Oct 12, 2009 8:10 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I certainly hope he can improve and it’s not unfeasible for him to do so i just worry about that being wishful thinking. I guess he did under-perform his projections somewhat so whilst he’s never going to be an average hitter (for a 1B) there’s a bit of hope there. Will be interesting to see what the projections are for next season when they come out. Of course he’s probably at his ceiling in terms of defensive numbers.

It could be just a result of his contact problems. If you’re that bad at putting the ball in play, you’ll probably draw some walks in the lowish minors.
His O-Swing% was 27.1%, which is pretty hacky, and he doesn’t have a lot of power, so it’s pretty hard to see him put up an above average BB%.

I don’t think we disagree. I think TI can improve, I just don’t think he can improve enough to be good for 1B.
Sadly, TI is one of my favorite players on the Giants. I wish he were better.

Wait… so, if Manny Burriss had played a full season, would he have been in the running for the team lead in walks?

Yeah, I know. It’s just fun to see that he was nearly on base 30% of the time even with a miserably slow swing that had a huge hole in it. I’m a very not-big fan of isolated OBP because it’s a) not linear and b) is not an indicator of being good, but it is fun at a glance to look at Burriss and go “wow, almost 60 points of isolated OBP… that’s like… almost superhuman by my current standards.”
Although I guess infieldwise Ishi’s was even better. Not that that makes the crappy stat any more meaningful.

Steve Holm had the highest BB% on the team and Fred Lewis (unsurprisingly) had the highest BB% rate of those with reasonable playing time. Burriss is somewhere around half-way.
Our pitchers actually did a nice job of drawing walks with 3/4 of our starters beating our team average BB% (and Cain was only slightly lower). In fact 8 position players (with greater than 100 AB’s) managed to put up lower walk rates than all 4 of our starting pitchers,

Better get Nick Johnson to platoon with Garko. If you like walks and OBP.
Seriously though, it would be amazing if JT could help Johnsons glove work a bit, Nick J with Ishi’s glove would be sweet.

Nick Johnson would certainly be an interesting option if other “bigger” moves aren’t available. He’s generally had a pretty decent glove, but I’m guessing his injuries have decreased his ability in that regard.
