Dream on!

I’m just not even going to watch anymore. Between Sharks and never-ending football, oh yeah, and that pesky midterm on Tuesday, I think I can make it through the weekend without watching anymore baseball!

just my luck that my Jets are playing Monday night, so I won’t be feeling my usual Sunday excitement tomorrow. Still I’ll take football over baseball tomorrow as there’s nothing worse than playoff baseball without the Giants. Just get the post season over and let the FA signing period begin already!

Fantasy fans tend to drive me nuts when I’m watching the game, so I’ve never really gotten into it. I used to have season tickets to the Jets’ games and it would make me crazy to have my team losing while some jerk behind me is yelling because somebody in Seattle just scored a TD.

There’s always the “pick ’em” variation where you just pick the winners. There are free and pay leagues.

Meh

I just don’t care. I don’t root for that player that week. If he scores, fine, but I’ll gladly take a fantasy loss if the niners do well. I had AP in a league and was very happy to see him shut down in Minny

That Neukom was lying about not increasing the payroll, and he went out and dropped enough money for Bay AND Holliday, playing Holliday in RF because he’s the superior defender.

I was so happy. Then I woke up.

Why do San Francisco teams insist on having terrible offenses? Frank Gore and Pablo Sandoval can't do it all.

nothing he’s done in his entire career says he is. His holdout was his agent’s call, not his. I personally don’t think Edwards is a “diva” either, I just think he’s an idiot. Nice job by your jets pulling that trade off after it became apparent they couldn’t fuck with Crabtree’s negotiations any more. I look forward to the niners getting your 5th rounder next year :)

After Game 3 of the Rockies-Phillies playoff series was postponed because of winter weather Saturday, the Phillies announced a pitching change.

They will send lefty J.A. Happ to the mound instead of Martinez. Happ, a rookie, said Friday that he felt better after being knocked out of Game 1. He he entered in relief and took a hard liner off his left leg in the seventh inning.

The Rockies on Sunday are sticking with their scheduled starter, right-hander Jason Hammel.

The Baseball Gods are clever

First off, of course they can see into your soul. They know who you’re pulling for even if you never breathe a word of it. That said, they don’t always work against you sometimes, like in 2001, they allow a chemically enhanced former Tigers fourth outfielder to flip a dying quail over the head of the Greatest Player Who Ever Lived, Except Harold Baines, and then you start to think that it’s not all a cruel joke, that happiness is possible, that, hey, maybe anybody can win this thing, and they keep you going for months and months and then when you’re so close you can smell it, they crush you again.

seems to me Dodgers have been doing quite well with a mediocre GM. Schmidt, Pierre, Andruw Jones were really bad signings. Furcal had one good year. Colletti had one really good trade in Ethier. I might be kind of cherry picking but I think his performance probably can’t be said as better than his old boss Sabean.

Somehow this makes me a little more optimistic on the Giants.

ugh

I’m sure something like this will happen.

What I’d like to see them do is replace the absolute holes of suck, with average bats. Instead, I’m sure we’ll pay a significant amount of money for someone who is a level off from the top. And, even if they are technically not ‘overpaid’ like Rowand, they will still provide not enough value to boost the offense significantly, given that there will still be myriad absolute holes.

Without a massive payroll, teams do not win by signing players to ‘fair value’ contracts. They need to find surplus value in lower paid guys.

The problem so far:

Post-season ball is not a matter of finding out who’s better than whom, and nowadays many people realize that. But what it should be about is the thrill of seeing baseball played at its very best, played by the very best teams under the greatest stress.

Has even one game this post-season looked like a showcase of baseball played at its very best? Or anything remotely close? Or have we seen sets of 18 guys with lampshades on their heads?

Wow. Why are you a baseball fan?

You may not like the Yankees, but A-Rod hitting a two run homerun in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game against one of the best closers in baseball (who hadn’t give up a homerun all season) is pretty damn compelling.

Torii Hunter’s three run homerun and passion after was pretty cool to see. And the Angels dominating the Red Sox after the Red Sox have owned them is compelling also.

So how would you “fix” the playoffs? Let 16 teams in so the regular season doesn’t matter? Just award the championship to the team with the best record at the end of the season?

evils vs lesser evils

Let’s just consider this from a practical standpoint for a moment. During the course of the regular season next year the dodgers will be up here to play the Giants how many times? 9? 10? You know how those dodger fans act already. Now….can you imagine if the bums actually won the freaking World Series? Those dodger fans would be – and I find this difficult to fathom – but they would be DRUNKER, RUDER, LOUDER, and MORE OBNOXIOUSER!!

Man, I'm getting old

I just noticed Alex Rodriguez is in his mid-30s. I was trying to think of how old he was, and I was thinking 31, maybe 42. Nope. He’s 34. And he’s been in the majors for 16 seasons. Geez.

That’s a great way to cope.

I was an Angels fan for a while. I was born in Orange County and according to my parents, we went to games all the time at the Big A when I was fresh out of the womb. I grew up a Giants fan (born to San Francisco parents, and we moved back up here shortly after I was born) as well as an Angels fan. But then they had an identity crisis and 2002 happened, and I turned my back on them.

There’s also the Second Missouri Compromise, when the Kings and Dodgers beat the Blues and Cardinals respectively, but despite the great history reference, I’m not a fan of anything that promotes the Dodgers winning.

Also, that was totally weird how the LA Kings were playing the St. Louis Blues the same day the Dodgers were playing the Cardinals. And how the Anaheim Ducks were playing the Boston Bruins the same day that the Angels played the Red Sox. Way too coincidental.

I don’t think baseball would like to go against the NFL.

"All I know is right now, you comeback and do you dwell on that? I think you're man enough to take it, you're man enough to chew on it, to spit it out and you learn from it. ... I think winners let it go. I think losers dwell on it and talk about it all week and that screws you up for the next opportunity going forward." - Mike Singletary after the 49ers loss to the Vikings

probably but people don’t see how bad the NFL would beat baseball outside prime time.

Well, first, it isn't either team's call; it's MLB's call.

Second, it is brutally cold there in the night, and a little less brutally cold in the daytime. It would have been more humane for the players, and thus a little more fair.

What am I saying??? “Fair” baseball can’t be played in Denver. That ridiculous altitude; the questionable humidification of the balls for BOTH teams (ahem); and now autumn chill that doesn’t really test the teams in conditions in which they played the season. Grumble, grumble, grumble.

Pedro Guerrero was batting and hit a triple, and at the end of the play Lasorda walked over to him and said, “Pedro, you tore the fucking cover off the fucking ball”, plain as day.

Instantly the sound went off on Lasorda’s mic, and he was not to be heard from again.

I understand your point about moving around to stay warm etc…, but baseball was not intended to be played when it’s that cold.

Which is why nobody with any sense would go commando without batting gloves. So far, quite opposite to the TBS prediction, this is hitting weather. The pitchers are going to have a very hard time keeping their hands warm, breaking pitches aren’t breaking as much in the heavier air, etc. This could be a high scoring game.
