Why isn't Sabean held accountable for leading the Giants into many years of mediocrity???
by oldrips on Oct 2, 2009 7:44 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I admire OGC for his honesty and his devotion to the Giants.
I also think he is drastically ignoring the pattern of the last three trades Sabean has made when he thinks his team is in the post season chase. They all involved swapping young pitchers for a position player and so far only one of those trades has a slim chance to not be complete rip off. Sanchez and Hillenbrand complete were busts. Either could have been had for the following season with lose a single bit of team controlled talent.
This also means Sabean’s plan to trade young arms for missing parts could be sound but he can’t executed it.
That’s it! Katie bar the door for this 79 win team is star crossed! And I am loving it.

He makes some good, points, but also alot of straw men.
Who was arguing to trade Posey and Bumgarner? None that I know of, at least before the later lost his fastball.
I think the easiest way to make a case against Sabean is to simply look at his track record in signings and trades over the last five seasons (spoiler alert: it’s pretty terrible). When was the last time the Giants made a big trade or FA signing that actually worked out well? I’d probably go with Ray Durham, but some of those people irrationally bitter over his brittleness might settle on Jason Schmidt; either way, that’s a loooong time ago. Sabean’s actually made some hay with his smaller moves, but it takes a ton of Uribes, Affeldts, and Vizquels to overcome the Zitos, Rowands, and Pierzynskis.

Two different subjects here in one package...
One: I agree OCG has been reacting poorly. People lash out in grief in different ways. I would say he is in denial right now. I think Sabean proposed strategy would work. I am also convinced he does not have the skills to pull it off. Nowhere in his tenure did Sabean have to integrate young players, en mass, for declined vets. He has no track record in handling those type of playing time choices. The Only record he has is trading off interesting farm hands players already on the MLB level that their current teams have given up on. And the last 3 contention type trades ( Hillenbrand, Garko & Sanchez) plainly show he has lost that touch at getting equitable value.
Subject Two:
The first Acquisition of Winn worked well. I would even say his current contract, over all, went well. He provided something like a 9.1 WAR (~$ 40MM) during that contract for $23.25MM. I would add an addition premium to it because at the time of signing the Giants really had nothing obviously promising in the upper minors and several OF spots to fill. Of coarse proper playing time management this season would have increased the profit margin but there is profit there.
I think Molia has been a good move as well with 6.6 WAR ( ~ $28.8MM) for a $16MM contract. Again figure in the Giants had absolutely nothing in system (thus in very weak bargaining spot) and this is a very shrewd move. Again proper playing time managment this season would have increased the profit margin but there is profit there.
To tie the two points together as long as he is looking for spots that have nothing in the farm he tends to do rather well. Even with this year’s Renteria bust he is still getting good value for filler free agents. The kicker is he can’t seem to realize when he doesn’t need a filler free agent ( ie Roberts & Rowand for CF instead of sliding Winn over for part of the time or more) of being able to make the manger realize youth must be served when it is almost equal to the Veteran because the front office needs to prove if they need to go get a filler for a given spot in given season or two. The franchise has recovered enough that now both these skills are critical and both have no real track record in Sabean’s past.

I’ll grant you Winn, but I don’t entirely trust fangraphs’ valuation of him. By their numbers, we was worth 8M his season and 20M last season. I’d like to believe in UZR, but I don’t believe it enough to really think that Winn was one of the most valuable position players in baseball last season, or that he’s been league average this season, or that he suddenly became the one of the mostvaluable defensive players in baseball at age 34.
As for Molina, I place his acquisition closer in scale to Affeldt or Vizquel than Zito or Rowand.

I accept your quibbles on Fangraphs valuations. To me WAR data is great back of envelope figuring and quick estimates not necessarily a precision instrument. Even if we knock their value of ’08 Winn to career norms the contract still turns a profit.
Anyways I was trying to give the Devil his due. Sabean has done some nice moves in the last 3 years. He just no longer seems to be able to do it when he thinks his team “is in it” or when he is giving up young pitchers. I think his track record shows this fairly well.

this.
Unless this franchise comes up with 2 more legit position players that are All Star telents strong in the only skill set Big Head’s strategy uses this team is doomed to 88 wins and under for the next 3-5 years. Then the Gm will continue to trade team controlled talent that might get better for veterans that, in their best year in Orange & Black, are desperate to hold onto some remnant of their past glory. I predict the talent level will be like 2007 in about 5 years.

They won seventy-two games because the pitching was so much better. Sabean gets credit for assembling many of the important pieces of that staff.
Where the problem lies, however, is his total incompetence when it comes to constructing a lineup. He makes foolhardy choices about the hitters he requires, overpays for mediocre hitters, and does not use his minor league pitching depth wisely. More than enough people on this site have demonstrated the truth of these statements.
I think the pitching will continue to be good, but I have GREAT doubts that the lineup will improve. The lineup can improve, but is gonna take an outside the box GM, which Sabean is not. I just fear the greatest pitching staff the team has had in years is going to be wasted by Sabean’s inability to build a lineup.

let’s wait and see how many years they get in their deals — hopefully not too many.
of course the offense has made people want to puke.
but no one thought they’d win this many games this season. frankly boch and sabean deserve a shot to try again for the playoffs next year. I’m really happy about this season….

What Bochy and Sabean “deserve” shouldn’t enter into it at all. The question is, are these the BEST men to lead the team? It’s hard for me to imagine that anyone could answer that question with a yes.

This is the crux of the issue I believe…
Being a “rookie” Managing Partner, I think he likely finds it rather difficult to truly evaluate and logically breakdown the necessities of each job and the make the “template” by which to say ‘good job’ or ‘bad job’ to either position, and thusly have to rely too highly on trusting that either ‘knows how to do their job’ and thusly relies on ‘skin deep’ numbers and returns.

Thus is why I was hopeful the Big Head might not be back. It is not as large of ego investment to make that move then turn to the Gm and say, “You can find a better fit for where we are trying to go to. We are not looking for a fit for where just came from.”

Neukom really let us down. He made a comment about how important the rest of the season was and how his decision would be made on who were the best men to lead this franchise going forward. Then he did nothing but retain the two men who had been hired before he was put in charge. Very dynamic, Bow Tie.
No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you
by rxmeister on Oct 2, 2009 11:43 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
sometimes it takes owners time to get their feet underneath them and settle into the job. This certainly was the safe play for Neukom. The team improved its record by a lot. If he didn’t bring them back and next year’s team didn’t make the playoffs he’d get ripped for being disloyal and for blowing it when the team was clearly turning things around.
But by bringing back Sabes and Bork, he can say that the two deserved another shot b/c they had turned the ship around, or so he thought. I mean, the team WAS better, record-wise, but I doubt Neukom has enough baseball savvy to understand why these two guys aren’t the right men for the job.

The thing with Neukom is that he has bought and paid for his position. The rest of the ownership group can ask him to not be the MGP anymore, but he would still own his piece of the ballclub.

it's not just that
the minority owners will probably give him some time to see what he does. He really hasn’t made his mark on the team yet and won’t be judged until he does. Of course, if just goes with the status quo for too long, there could be a mutiny (however unlikely), but I get the impression that as long as he has the Sue Burns stake in his corner, he won’t be going anywhere.
I’m certainly willing to give him a lot more time than just a season, even though I’m not terribly happy about bringing these two dimwits back for another go around.

I call Bow-Tie an enemy because by his recent decision, he has shown us that he opposes everything we here at MCC believe about what the Giants should be doing. Awhile ago we were rosterbating. Some people wanted the Giants to get Adrian Beltre, inevitably someone would say Adrian Beltre is basically Pedro Feliz with a little more pop or something like that. Then it seemed some other players, Edwin Encarnacion, Joe Crede, were compared to Feliz. Eventually we just decided that everyone was Pedro Feliz.

Weirdly, Feliz has halved his defensive value (by UZR) since moving to Phillie. Odd, that.
In 2009, he had a WAR of 1.5 compared to Beltre’s 2.3, despite them having exactly the same wOBA.

This news makes me feel the deepest apathy. I couldn’t imagine anyone getting fired after the team won more games than anyone had predicted, no matter what the faults of the men involved. Business is often results-oriented, rather than process-oriented.
No, really, I have updated my blog this year: http://skaldheim.livejournal.com/tag/baseball

But, when you think the current pieces have gotten you has far as they can, you need to make a change.
The Yankess could have continued with Showalter at the helm after 1995, but they brought in a manager (Torre) that was able to get them to the next level. I don’t think Sabean or Bochy can get this team to the next level.

Change would have been a lot to expect from new head honcho Neukom. It’s a lazier approach to focus on results more than process, but it’s par for the course with people who are still familiarizing themselves with things.

Well, I hope it is a one-year contract then.
I just think I would accept the more conservative approach if we had the time to do so, but this pitching staff may be different (or not as good) three years from now. Improper management by Sabean could result in a lot of missed opportunities for much needed improvement.
What if Sabean makes horrible moves this offseason and during next season? Then you have only one year left with Cain and other players start to get expensive. Basically, we could be set back a lot in a year.
by Squire_Boone on Oct 1, 2009 4:33 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
But a one year contract could put more “win now” pressure on Sabean with him giving less weight to the future.

But it would be a much bigger upgrade to sign Nick Johnson to play 1B and keep Pablo at 3B. Assuming, of course, that Johnson stayed healthy. But the point is I would think you could find a bigger upgrade by improving the offense at 1B than you could by improving the defense at 3B.
by taliesin on Oct 1, 2009 3:42 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, maybe. Johnson and Beltre are a couple of hard-to-predict players. But you’re not going to lose a lot by shifting Pablo across the diamond, so they should consider all options.
by Evan on Oct 1, 2009 3:48 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
They certainly should consider it. I’m just making the point that if we assume Beltre could match Garkawa’s offensive production (a tenuous assumption), the offensive production would stay the same and I don’t see how you could expect to improve the defense by more than 10-15 runs with this move (especially since Pablo’s probably worse than Ishikawa defensively).

Except, as I said, Beltre would be a really marginal upgrade, probably 1-1.5 wins. If he’s relatively cheap, sure, he’s probably worth $5-6 million, and that could wind up being a tremendous bargain if he got back to his 2007 production at the plate.
It’s sad, though; this year he really was Pedro Feliz.

First, the “okay, then who question?” is pretty idiotic. This is essentially asking this group who we would get to replace Ken Lewis at BofA. We are not inside baseball people, so although we are a pretty knowledgable group as a whole, our knowledge of who the bright assistant GMs in the game are is limited.
But things we do know:
-Sabean has never been able to put together a good offense without the help of the greatest hitter of all time.
-We have not made the playoffs in 5 straight years now.
-The goal in sports is to win championships. Sabean has had 13 years to reach this goal and has never suceeded.
-There are bright individuals in the game of baseball who could be successful GMs & mangers, even if we don’t know all their names.
It is up to Bowtie, Baer & Co to interview candidates and come up with the right person. But holding on to people just because the person we might get to replace them is bad is silly.

if you wanna play fantasy baseball with people’s jobs, so be it. it’s not “idiotic” then to come back at you and ask for defense of your argument.
Sabean has never put together a good offense without the help of the greatest hitter of all time.. that may arguably true.
But do you think the Giants would have been a top 3 offense with a 2001 Bonds in the 2009 lineup? Hell no.
Sabean had supporting pieces far superior. So while you can rip him for not getting it done this year, you can’t just rip him for not doing so in the past simply under the umbrella that Bonds was the ONLY piece of that offense that was worth anything. That would be, idiotic.

-With the pitching the Giants had this year, they wouldn’t need a top 3 offense to make the playoffs. A league average offense would have been plenty to get this team into the playoffs.
-I’m not sure I understand your last point. “Sabean had far superior supporting pieces in the past.” And who’s fault is it that he doesn’t have those supporting pieces in place now?
-I never said Bonds was the only piece of those offenses. But having someone as good as him makes it easier to cover up the shortcomings of others.
-It seems you are looking at this year only. The team has had a horrible offense for 5 years running, during which time Sabean was the one putting the team together. How many years of consecutive below average offenses does he need to put together for it to be obvious he just can’t do it?
by AngelWillSaveUs on Oct 1, 2009 4:18 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
But do you think the Giants would have been a top 3 offense with a 2001 Bonds in the 2009 lineup? Hell no.
This is a highly debatable statement. 2001 Barry Bonds was good for 156 runs above replacement (according to BP). Anyone think the Giants’ left fielders this year were good for more than 30? No. Ok then. Add 126 runs to the 646 runs the Giants have scored this year, and you get 772 runs, which would be good for — wait for it — third in the NL behind the Phils and Rox.
by taliesin on Oct 1, 2009 4:19 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
while the team would be much much better
and the offense surely would have been enough to put them in the playoffs, I’m not sure this adds up. The 2001 team scored 799 runs, and it looks a heck of a lot better in all the the non-Bonds areas than this one does.
by DrStankus on Oct 1, 2009 7:28 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It works out just fine. The 2001 club “only” scored 799 runs, but their EqR (how many runs BP figures they should have scored based on how they hit, according to EqA) was 866 runs. So they underperformed by 67 runs (which seems like a lot). This year’s team, as of yesterday, had scored 639 runs; but their EqR is only 608, so they have overperformed by 31 runs (which is a bit frightening).
If you add it all up and assume that the 2001 team did not have Bonds but did overperform by 31 runs (rather than underperforming by 67), you get 866 – 31 + 156 = 741 — which is much better than this year’s 639. So your intuition that the non-Bonds portion of the 2001 team was better than this year’s is correct (Jeff Kent and Rich Aurilia were both better that year than any member of the current Giants — even Sandoval). This year’s team has just been a lot luckier.

ah, thanks. I didn’t realize that that 01 club underperformed by that much.

It could be; the 2000, 2002, and 2003 teams all also underperformed their uEqR, but by much less. 2003 only missed by 4 runs, 2000 and 2002 by like 15. So that may be a factor, but it doesn’t explain the whole 67 runs.

In terms of managers, the backup QBs would be guys like Dan Rohn in Fresno, Steve Decker in CT, maybe Lenn Sakata if you could get him to come back from Japan. Manny Acta is another possibility. Some folks here were interested in Ron Wotus after Alou left.
As far as GMs, my knowledge is pretty thin, but former Twins GM Terry Ryan is an interesting possibility – the same guy who fleeced Sabean in the AJ trade. Dodgers scouting director Logan White has been mentioned, as have Paul DePodesta and Kim Ng.
Now I don’t know whether any of those folks would necessarily be better than Sabean or Bochy. But I do know that the team that Sabean has put together, and Bochy has put on the field, failed in a number of areas that the Giants say they’re trying to emphasize. Getting younger and healthier? Edgar Renteria, not the answer. Better conditioning? Molina certainly didn’t show any better conditioning this season. Emphasizing homegrown talent…sitting Posey on the bench for a month doesn’t count.

Here's the problem with that
You have to buy into the fact that the pitching will stay as good or better, and attribute that to Sabean and Bochy. It may, but in all likelihood, the pitching overall was probably at its ceiling this year (can we really expect the bullpen to repeat?).
Because Bochy doesn’t understand offense, and even if he did, Sabean doesn’t give him the right pieces, it just doesn’t seem likely that these guys can pull off anything better than this year. Which is sad, because we should always be trying to improve.

I’m still waiting for someone here to come up with a logical replacement for Sabean or Bochy who would be an improvement. And using “anyone else would be better” arguments, or “ESPN or the Chronicle told me this guy would be good” arguments are not good enough.
I want who, why, and why in THIS organization as rationale. I mean, replacements don’t grow on trees. I don’t want to hear about GMs who havent done it in 15 years (and have no interest in that role anymore), managers who are bench coaches but all you know about them is what TV tells you, managers who get along with Latin players… blah blah
until then, im fine with the status quo. We now have players who can win. A few additions to the lineup (your anger and past history be damned), and we can win in spite of Sabean and Bochy… even though I dont think they’ve been that terrible. Every manager has flaws.

Well, we'll see I guess
Considering that the offense actually overperformed this year in terms of runs scored (by about 30 — they were clutch!), they need almost 100 extra runs of performance to get to 700. That would be a tall order, even for competent management. From what I’ve heard so far, Sabean seems likely to essentially bring back this season’s team, hopefully at least minus Winn (but it will probably also be minus Lewis and Garko). That’s not a recipe for success. Happy to be wrong, of course.

Here is your problem right there. Playoff teams should not have to win in spite of their managers and GMs. Those people are there to help the team get to the post season. If there are people in those positions constantly making decisions that are a hindrance to that end they do not deserve to be there.
It does not matter that we do not have someone in mind to replace them, if you are terrible at your job, you will be fired. The manager does not wait until they have someone to replace you with while you are stealing from the register.

I don’t follow the Yankees very closely, so maybe you’re right, I dunno. But ten years ago it was striking that while every other manager in baseball was using their closer just the same in the postseason as in the regular season — i.e., ninth inning only, and only with a three-run or less lead — Torre was making Mo into an old-style two-inning stopper. And you can’t argue with the results.
by Evan on Oct 1, 2009 4:04 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I can argue that a bullpen goes WELL beyond their closer. You can’t get to a closer in the postseason if you burn out the entire bullpen in meaningless games all year… cuz then the games that require saves are now games you trail in. See: Yankees playoff history after 2001

If managers are mostly inconsequential why are they paid millions to do what they do. Why don’t the players run it themselves.
There was at least 5 games during this season (on the conservative side) where Bochy’s managerial decisions probably cost the Giants the game. Not decisions before the game, but decisions during the game, i.e. when to pull a starting pitcher, DOUBLE SWITCH.

But every bit of evidence indicates that Sabean has no clue how to put together a lineup. One can argue that he knew at one time, but there are now 5 years, 5 freakin years that show he has no clue. He has constantly "bought high " on mediocrity. Overpay for career year: Rowand. Overpay for hot two months: Winn. Overpay for guys who are old and likely to decline: Renteria.
There are two guys in this lineup that produced an OPS+ over 100 in the top ten in PAs. One of them is Uribe, and he’s a prime candidate for a Rowanding. Don’t get me wrong, I loved watching him this year, but he’s way more likely to put up a <700 OPS than a >800.

I don’t spend a lot of time trying to identify good GM candidates, because I don’t think we in our mom’s basements are really capable of having informed opinions on the subject. So much of the GM’s job — and even more so an assistant GM’s job — is behind the scenes, it’s just hard to know.
But there are plenty of highly regarded assistants around baseball, and some of them are going to prove to be the Schuerholtzs & Epsteins & Beanes of tomorrow. I’d rather take a chance on one of those guys than someone we know just isn’t very good.

It doesn’t appear as though they’ll be able to build one in the next couple of years without some major overhauls that the Giants FO doesn’t seem to be interested in making. That is NOT GOOD.

With luck the Giants will go 52-110 (With Cain and Lincecum each winning 20 games) so that Sabean's obvious brutal hackage will come home to roost in spades.

Meh, I actually like Bochy
I don’t think that field managers affect the outcome of the game very much in either direction, and the players seem to love him.
It’s the nature of managing that you get crucified for your bad decisions and get zero credit for your good ones. Sometimes I think the McCoven would scream and foam over anyone who put on the Giants’ manager’s uniform – not because they are doing a horrible job, but because complaining about managers is easy.
Add in the fact that the team outperformed everybody’s expectations this year and I am not sad he’s coming back next year. Hell, I like him more than Baker and much more than Alou.
by sfmaynard on Oct 1, 2009 5:22 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I would be fine with Bochy on a team that didn’t feature a bunch of mediocre veterans. So if Winn, Molina, and Aurilia are gone and are not replaced with other mediocre veterans, I guess he’ll be fine. But what are the chances that happens with Sabean picking the roster?

They did outperform expectations this year, it’s true. It’s also true that the two previous years under Bochy helped lower those expectations to a level easier to outperform.
I agree about Alou, though. Alou’s handling of the pitching staff was atrocious and Bochy’s has been decent.

I see a lot of the same problems Aluo had handling pitchers as Big Head does with position players and their lineup positions. At least Aluo would try other pitchers when he middle reliever went up in flames and option existed already in the system. I can’t say the same for Big Head.

I don’t know if this has been mentioned but this could be proof of something far worse than Sabean and Bochy – an owner who is either totally clueless or just doesn’t give much of a crap about winning.

Maybe, but then who remembers Eddie D’s first coach as owner of the 49ers? The case is still being presented on the current owner (Bow Tie).
Emotionally I am in synch with you. I have a bad, bad feeling I have watched the pitching heavy equivalent to ’78 Giants if there had been a wild Card back then. I also have worse feeling we are about either run into a redo of the ’79 Giants, or worse yet, a strong batch of what has been done in Huston the last 5 years. I fervently hope either is not so.
That’s it! Katie bar the door for this 79 win team is star crossed! And I am loving it.

Thanks for bringing up Eddie D
his first couple of years were pretty bad – he made some atrocious decisions. But when he hired a football genius to run the team and set the tone, things took off.
I wish Neukom would find a genius like that too, but they’re pretty rare. I’d settle for someone with a vision that doesn’t include a bunch of 35+ something players getting 500+ at bats while good young talent is stifled and their growth into productive major leaguers is stunted.
Sabean and Bochy are not the kind of guys who will develop young players and turn them in to good major hitters b/c they refuse to let them play. They’ll play shitty young players who get a couple hits in their first game, but their impatience is beyond insane.

Here's my fear
I grew up in the Midwest, rooting for the Cubs. At some point I realized the owner — who, it must be pointed out, was not a person but a corporation — didn’t need to field a championship team in order to make money. They just had to be good enough to be roughly speaking in contention for most of the season. Wrigley Field is, after all, an attraction on its own, so winning 85 games or so will keep people interested enough that the team will make a ton of money. But to do that, you only need an average payroll.
Sure, they could spend a bunch more on players and give themselves a better chance of winning the Series (which would boost revenue, of course), but they might fail. So the sweet spot in terms of profit is not to try to field a championship team, but only a “contender.” This is what the re-signing of Bochy and Sabean signals to me — contentment with fielding a mediocre “contender.”

A possible silver lining?
From this report,
Sabean received a two-year extension in 2007 that took him through this year and the Giants had to exercise a club option for 2010. Bochy’s three-year contract worth roughly $6 million is due to expire at the end of the season.
…it appears as if the Giants are only exercising their 3rd year option on Sabean. That would be the best-case scenario, IMO, since it could mean Sabean’s still on a short leash and could be let go after the 2010 season with no money lost. As for Bochy, let’s hope they follow the old-time LA Fodgers’ routine and only sign him to a 1-year deal.

Sabean got lucky!
He inherited Bonds. He got really lucky with the Kent trade.
And for a few years Aurillia turned out to be better than he
had imagined. Still between dusty and sabes they could
not nail down the big game in the WS.

What are you drinking? I’m drinking left over Miller Lite from a bbq a few weeks ago. Nothing’s gonna taste good now, so might as well polish them off.

no more MLB.tv for me. I’ll be here VERY sparingly next season. To those who love that idea (all of you), congrats. Wow. Fuck you, Giants.

Thankfully, I only got MLB.tv when they offered the rest of the games of the season for $15 ($20 for premium).

BORK BORK BORK!
Why isn't Sabean held accountable for leading the Giants into many years of mediocrity???
by oldrips on Oct 2, 2009 4:38 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
As long as this current ownership group has the team, I doubt the Giants will ever win the World Series. They seem happy just to contend every year and make money that way. Forget that if the Giants were to win the World Series, they would own San Francisco. They could raise ticket prices, beer and food. No one would complain. They would make MORE money by trying to win the World Series than just contend every year.

The Giants already own SF.
I don’t see how they could get away with raising ticket and concession prices much more even with a ring.
Frankly, I’m surprised that they get away with it now. As long as the Bay Area is a two-team market, the Giants and Oakland are both mid-market teams at best. That’s really the reason why the Giants are so strongly against the A’s moving to San Jose, a more equitable division of the Bay Area’s population, a likely consequence of a shiny new park in the biggest population center in the region, would be disastrous for SF.
