It just occurred to me

It’s really hard for me to catch games in the evenings and weekends – because of the kids and all, I get interrupted and catch bits here and there. So this will probably be the last game I get to hear in its entirety this year. Sad.

Three for me.

In one of mine, Zito had a no hitter for a while, actually! It was against…crap. The Rangers? Whoever Andruw Jones is on this year. He broke up the no-hit bid with a two-run home run.

Rowand's always going to draw more ire from me than a guy like Velez

for that reason. He should bring way more to the table than solid defense, a mediocre bat, and terrible situational hitting.

by NHL84 on Oct 1, 2009 2:13 PM PDT up reply actions

well

I don’t believe in situational hitting as a repeatable, valuable skill. And while Rowand might be underperforming his contract much more than Velez, the team is still better with him out there.

It can be

Striking out or grounding out weakly to the pitcher with 1 out and a guy on 3rd, or first and second, no outs, and GIDP (or GITP, which he’s done before), seem to be his MO. When a flyball gets it done, and you’re the 7 or 8 hitter, you have to come through with that.

by NHL84 on Oct 1, 2009 2:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Rowand does strike out a lot. He’s the same guy in every situation, but that guy is less valuable than a better contact hitter in some situations.

No, he’d take the one year deal for two reasons.

1) Arbitration looks at dumbass stats like dingerz, RBI, BA, etc. So he’ll earn a lot of money, because by those metrics, he’s actually not bad. No way the BRAZZ argues with wOBA, or even OBP.
2) He knows that Bochy would not sit him for more than half the season, i.e. he’ll be the starting catcher.

“It’s hard to quantify how much he has left,” the skipper said. “He can obviously still hit — he has 20 home runs — catch and throw. He might need more days off.”

Andres Torres hit another crazy long home run. Mark Reynolds gifted us a few. B-Money with some RBI hits. I think even Ryan Rohlinger kicked in some.

Please hit better, Randy Winn.
