I used to kind of like Scott...
"This season is a perfect example of how pitching and defense win baseball games," center fielder Aaron Rowand said. "Our offense obviously is not the greatest, but it's not terrible, either."
Wow. Just... wow.

I expect him to say...
“This season is a perfect example of how pitching and defense win baseball game,” and then shut up. Trying to defend this offense – in any way – is absurd.

All pro baseball players are delusional about how good their team is.
You’re not going to find one that wouldn’t defend their team.

Some might do it sarcastically though. Adrian Gonzalez and Zack Greinke, to name two.

Well, he’s supposed to be all Gritty McLeader isn’t he — what he should clearly say is “Our pitchers pitched their butt off, and we didn’t support them well enough offensively — starting with myself.”

One day he’s going to have a Tin Cup like moment and step right in front of that plate and pull that son of a bitch right into the glove in left. He’ll pump his arms up in the air as he rounds the bases. It’ll be magical.
Forget the fact that he just blew the US Open on one shot had a shitty season because he couldn’t lay off of one pitch, it’ll be memorable dammit.

I guess what really makes me mad
is that he’s justifying himself and the rest of the putrescence surrounding him.
I want someone – anyone – in this organization to stand up and admit that they suck offensively and are going to change that – through hard work, off-season conditioning, adjusting their approach, getting new players, valuing OBP – ANYTHING, as long as it’s a promise that they’ll try to do better.
Right now, nobody is communicating this – they’re all defensive as hell, refusing to take responsibility and doing nothing to indicate that anything will be different next year.
As an aside, just the fact that Juan Uribe is being considered as a fixture in next year’s starting lineup on a multiple-year contract indicates that NOTHING IS CHANGING.
That’s what pisses me off about Scott’s quote.

putrescence
Didn’t think it was an actual word until I looked it up.

What’s interesting to me, is that in the last KNBR podcast (and I think even in the chalk talk that Jponry and the Mayor went to correct me if I’m wrong on that), Sabean did directly say that if you look at playoff teams, they all have high OBP and OPS and that we need to get that. He also said that Lansford has talked till he was blue in the face about more patient approaches, but that players sometimes “are who they are.”
Those were both very positive things for me. However, he gave absolutely no indication of changing how he targets players as a way to fix this basic problem. He talked about definitely bringing back Freddy Sanchez (career OBP of .334 with a career .300 BA) and Jose Uribe (career OBP of .299!), he praised Bengie Molina (career OBP .308). I honestly came away with the feeling that he thinks the key to raising our OBP is to hit for higher averages.
At this point I’m just confused, I guess.

Roger, you've found the problem,
which is that Sabean wants to get a couple of higher-average guys this offseason and believes that alone will fix the offense. They won’t go seeking a real power bat.
I think they’ll keep Bengie for one more two-year deal because he’ll put up better offensive numbers from that position than Posey or anyone else next year. And Sabean will look for a high-average corner outfielder rather than a power bat. And aside from resigning Uribe for 2 years to man 3B next year, and moving Pablo to 1B and bringing back a surgically repaired Renteria and Sanchez up the middle, that is all the change you’ll see for 2010, aside from getting Penny to stay for as cheaply as possible.

Yeah, I just don’t know how he can say that and then be like “and we want Velez in left, Rowand in center, Renteria at short, and Sanchez at second and we wouldn’t mind bringing back Bengie at catcher! :D? :D?”

Raising your average will raise your OBP…
Still. it’s not a good indication that he gets the whole ‘not making outs’ paradigm.
Utter frustration and futility.

and Jose Uribe (career OBP of .299!),

Bringing back Jose Uribe will be difficult.
I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

Just to be different and because I been surly around here lately.
For all the guff I give the Rowand contract I do have to tip my hat to him in one way. He has to know there is sizable faction of the Giants’ fans that did not like his unsound Defensive play in ’08. The hitting in the bottom 6-8 spots has to bruise the ego as well. I doubt he likes getting paid $12MM a year to be not quite excellent on defense and hit 6th -8th. Through it all, to my knowledge, Scott has not turned on the fan base once. He is the Anti Bobby Murcer. For that I do thank him.
That’s it! Katie bar the door for this 79 win team is star crossed! And I am loving it.

Aurillia for GM!
“You hope that the issue of the offense is addressed and that they can take this a step further next year,” said veteran infielder Rich Aurilia, whose active playing career with the Giants likely will end with this season.
