Live Blogging the Manny-Ramirez-to-the-Giants Negotiations!
1:01 a.m. – According to a high-ranking source, the Giants are out on Manny Ramirez.
2:35 a.m. – According to a high-ranking official, the Giants are in on Manny Ramirez.
4:45 a.m. – According to a high-ranking source, the Giants are in on Manny Ramirez, but only for the major league minimum.
5:22 a.m. – According to a high-ranking official, the Giants are in on Manny Ramirez. They’ve offered him a five-year deal.
5:23 a.m. – According to a high-ranking official, the previously reported five-year-deal is only partially accurate. Of the five years, all of them are option years, including the first year. The Giants will have the ability to void the entire contract on May 1st.
5:24 a.m. – The previously reported five-year options-only deal has been denied by Scott Boras, who notes that Manny is hoping for five consecutive player options for five years, at $25M per year.
5:54 a.m. – According to the El Telégrafo del Pollo newspaper in Dominican City, Manny Ramirez signed with the Dodgers for 4 years, $85M.
6:15 a.m. – According to my source, neither El Telégrafo del Pollo nor Dominican City are real. Manny is still on the open market.
6:16 a.m. – According to a high-ranking source, the Giants are out, citing a commitment to their youth movement.
6:54 a.m. – According to a high-ranking official, the Giants are in, citing a need for a power hitter.
7:39 a.m. – According to a high-ranking source, the Giants are out, citing budget concerns.
9:32 p.m. – According to a high-ranking official, the Giants are in, citing a moving oration from "Chet in Gilroy", who called into KNBR with reasoning that was so airtight, so passionate, that the organization had no choice but to reconsider.
10:35 p.m. – According to a high-ranking official, the Giants are neither in nor out on Manny Ramirez according to a high-ranking source. Instead, the team is in antarabhāva, which is Sanskrit for "intermediate state." The source described the state as "all, yet none, with the dissolution and transmutation of the free agent market still in front of us, yet also behind."
11:33 p.m. – Larry Baer was on KNBR this morning, and described the efforts to sign Manny Ramirez as "in the first inning."
12:10 a.m. – Henry Schulman reported that the Manny Ramirez talks were "in the third or fourth inning."
12:15 a.m. – Jayson Stark reported that the Manny Ramirez-to-the-Giants were "in the second inning, but a shirtless, drunk fan just jumped down from the stands, and security is chasing him around the field, which has caused substantial delays."
12:28 a.m. – According to a high-ranking official, the Giants are "definitely not interested in Manny Ramirez. No way. What a stupid thing to say. The person who told you that was either stupid or trying to manipulate you. In fact, no one could be that stupid. They’d have to be evil. What evil, manipulative moron told you that? Point out the person who started the rumor, and I’ll cut him; I’ll cut him good."
1:35 a.m. – According to a high-ranking official, the Giants are "definitely interested in Manny Ramirez. Why wouldn’t they be?"
1:55 a.m. – According to a high-ranking source, if the Giants miss out on Manny Ramirez, look for them to sign C.C. Sabathia to a hometown discount.
2:33 a.m. – The Giants are in "the final stages" of a trade that would swap Jonathan Sanchez for Manny Ramirez, according to a source with knowledge of the negotiations.
3:10 a.m. – According to a high-ranking source with knowlege of the negotiations, who also went to school with the sister of a high-ranking official, the Giants have "given up" trying to acquire Manny Ramirez, and have turned their attention to Toronto's Alex Rios.
More updates as events warrant. If you have any updates to add, please post them in the comments section, as I am in no way sick of this story.

According to a high-ranking source, the Giants are going to pay Manny Ramirez to play defense like Manny, but hit like Andruw Jones, but for the Dodgers.

This way, whether the Giants sign him or not, Sabean can bitch about it in a press conference afterwards.

A high ranking giants official...
Hell, it was Sabean himself in an interview tonight…“In no way, shape, or form are we going to sign Manny Ramirez. Scott Boras demands are simply too high and as i told him earlier, we are very interested. In fact, the negotiations are going so smoothly, I think we will have an announcement in the morning!”
What a great piece of fiction...
It was fiction, right?
Well done, Grant. A great read.

Giants Sign Ramirez!
Looking for middle ground in the Ramirez debacle, the Giants have signed Mario Ramirez, age 51, who last played in the majors in 1985!. Sabean is especially proud of htis deal, because this Ramirez can plan on the infield.

Non-related update
But according to Keith Law’s facebook, in 2003 the Blue Jays offered Roy Halladay for Jesse Foppert, Kurt Ainsworth, and Jerome Williams.
Aaron King is still my homeboy... iffy mechanics and all
omg he actually does have a facebook. Even if you’re joking, you’re killing my buzz, fanshot that shiz.

Not joking
But I can’t link to either that specific comment or that specific status update thread.
Anyway, I know it’s hard to think about now, but at the time, it would’ve been crazy for the Giants to do that…. kind of…
Aaron King is still my homeboy... iffy mechanics and all
lets look back to 2003…
Foppert – Considered by many the top pitching prospect in baseball
Williams- Top 50 Prospect
Ainsworth- Top 75 Prospect
Roy Halladay- coming off his first solid year in 2002 (19 wins, 2.93 era, 25 years old)
I guess it would be similar to this…
Bumgardner, Alderson, Sosa for Edinson Volquez
It would have been even worse, since Foppert, Williams, and Ainsworth were all in the majors in 2003 instead of the low minors.

What sucks
Sabean traded Ainsworth (and Damian Moss, ugh) for…. Sidney Ponson.
Yes. That was not great (even though the former two never really amounted to anything afterward).
Aaron King is still my homeboy... iffy mechanics and all
I was not happy with that trade at the time. I’m still not, but I guess it ended up being inconsequential.

One of the first games at Mays Field I ever saw, where the Giants lost, was a game Sidney Ponson pitched. I think the game ended with the Giants down by 2 or something and the bases loaded.

In a spectacular, ground-breaking trade, the Giants are pleased to announce that they have acquired Manny Ramirez . The details are still sketchy but it seems that the Giants acquired the rights to Peyton Manning for draft choices and immediately traded him to Boston in exchange for Ramirez who, fantastically enough, was STILL under contract to the Red Sox.
The Red Sox, in an unprecedented display of civic responsibility, are donating Manning to the New England Patriots for summary execution.
Patron saint of pesky hitters.
There's more to it than that
It also involved the Miami Heat sending a salary-cap exemption to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for naming rights to their new arena. And then there’s some complicated stuff that I didn’t understand.

We made MLBTR with this post.
Bill Plaschke says the Dodgers are “playing the Manny Ramirez game perfectly.” McCovey Chronicles liveblogs that game from the Giants’ side.
Insanity is just a state of mind.
That's pretty remarkable...

Honestly
I would be very happy if the roster as currently constructed was the opening day roster. The front office has taken huge steps in the positive direction in the past 6 months, starting with the trade of Ray Durham and culminating in several smart, low risk FA signings. This team could contend this season, which was nothing more than a pipe dream this time last year. I would much rather the org make smart, low risk moves than make trades or signings that could jeopardize the future (Swisher, Nady, Manny and Wiggington fall under this catagory.) the only bad moves in the past 6 months were the accidental DFA of Sergio Romo and the unfortunate DFA of Travis Denker. Every day that the FO doesn’t cave and try to acquire one of these big name sis another victory for the org long term.

Just say no to mediocre free agents
I say don’t look for the quick fix. Build the team with the farm system. Put your money into the farm system and don’t trade away your prospects. Build your team with inexpense young players that can contend for a while. Save your money to sign your own free agents. You need 3 hard throwing starting pitchers to get you through the playoffs. The Yankees are trying to buy them. The Giants have them on their roster, Lincecum, Cain and Sanchez.
Trying?
I’d say the Yankees are doing.
