I Sure Hope This Is Stopping At 30 (I Would Have Stopped At 25)

I doubt very much if any here can actually tell the difference between these choices or for that matter any of the last 3 choices.

by giantsrainman on Jan 7, 2009 6:14 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Yes, because 21 to 25 is so much clearer than 26 to 30. Anyways, we’ll be stopping at 30, which it says in the very first sentence. In bold. Since the 26th poll.

Secret's out

There isn’t actually going to be a vote for the 30th spot. I’m just going to pick whoever I want that hasn’t made the list yet. Hope you’re all happy with David Quinowski.

Surprisingly

Surprisingly, it would appear that there is enough depth in the Giants’ organization now that there are more than 30 players who actually have shot at making the majors. There will almost certainly be at least one player not making the list who already HAS played in the major.

by sharksrog on Jan 7, 2009 6:45 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Actually, I could rank everyone on the poll and offer a reason for it. I think the deep-prospect arguments are pretty interesting. Just leave us be, for crying out loud. It’s January, and we want something to talk about.

Can I interest you in this hearty Matt Cain trade proposal? We’ve got a great two-for-one deal going if you’d like to include a Jonathan Sanchez trade with your order.

I'm still pulling the Matos lever

And again I have to question those voting for Nicholson over Matos. Nicholson pitched well in rookie ball last year at age 22. Matos, just one year older, shut down AA (1.23 ERA, 0.98 WHIP) before getting his callup. One year older but three levels higher, getting comparable results.

True

I’m not voting for Nicholson, but I imagine people really like the 54:3 K:BB ratio. 3 BB’s! Granted, he’s way too old for Rookie Ball.

I would be fine to keep going, but it’s losing steam. Anyways, it has served its purpose in providing a distraction from the usual offseason drudgery. Teams are getting close to set now, and it’s about time to talk about 2009.

Let's go to 40!

Why not? 50 might be even better. That way EVERYONE could get his favorite left-out prospect on the list. I’ll be we could go 50 deep without getting truly ridiculous.

I have really enjoyed this poll and truly DO hope it goes well past 30. You know the old saying: Life begins at 30. :)

YES ON MATOS

I only have a signature because I recognize everyone else by their sigs, not their usernames..

by lmaozedong on Jan 7, 2009 8:40 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Success? He had a near 5 ERA in 30 IP. It’s a small sample, but it’s not like he came in and blew hitters away. His minor league track record is a little better but I just wasn’t that impressed with what I saw from him this past year in the bigs.

Unless a reliever is lights out closer material (which Matos isn’t) I’m almost always going to take a starter instead in these prospect rankings. My thinking is that not only do starters add more value, but if they flame out they can be turned into relievers. If a reliever flames out, it’s probably the end of his career.

by xanthan on Jan 7, 2009 8:43 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs
