Jason Giambi Reaches Agreement With A's
Wow! They are giving these guys away for free. At that price SF should at least sniffed.

I wonder if he regrets what he said on Letterman when he signed with the Yankees.

What did he say on Letterman?

I think it was on a top ten list. He said something like,
“Have you ever even been to Oakland?”
Some local news stations decided to make it a story on a slow day.
"That will go over like a lead zeppelin."

Why would he regret it?
Have you ever been to Oakland? Pass.

I Am Fine With The Giants Passing On Giambi
Offense and defense combined I don’t think he is projected to be much of an upgrade over Ishikawa at 1B in 2009, I would rate him and Crede as being of equal overall value and the same injury risk. Crede’s righthanded bat and 3B defense fits in much better with the Giants needs then Jason’s lefthanded bat and 1B defense. That said I am still of the mind to pass on Crede (or for that matter Wigginton) too.

He is cheap enough to get 4 ABs then let TI and his glove close out the win at 1b

Defense In The First 7 Innings Counts Just As Much As Defense In The Last 2
Plus Ishikawa has a chance to be a long term answer and Giambi does not.
by giantsrainman on Jan 6, 2009 7:10 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Agree
However with Giambi being virtually free for one season SF could see if it works out. If after a few months if it is not working out GIambi could be had for nothing at trade deadline as a DH.
If Ishikawa is a long term answer in April of 2009 he should still be a long term answer in August 2009 or April 2010.

Since When Is $5.5M Virtually Free?
If he doesn’t work out why would anyone want to assume the remainder of his contract? Finally, with regards to Ishikawa’s development you can just turn it off for a season (he is out of options) and expect to be able to start it right back up again a year later and everything to be the same. This is not a vet who misses a year because of injury we are talking about here with Ishikawa.
by giantsrainman on Jan 6, 2009 7:26 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
If the defense is sooo unbearable then you get rid of but the bat still works very well. If Ishikawa is as good as you are saying the talent will still shine through, if after less playing time it doesn’t then maybe he isn’t the right player.
Believe the $4.5M 2009 salary is very very inexpensive and come deadline time would even be less expensive. To me it would be worth the risk. Better than trying to get a Burrell, Dunn or another OF and then make them play 1b. If people want these OFs to work with JT Snow to become 1b would prefer an inexpensive Giambi work with Snow to improve his defense.

I Am Not In Favor Of Burrell, Dunn, Or Even Manny
The only outfielder I am interested in is Barry at most likely even less dollars then the A’s gave to Giambi.

People would be screaming LULZ TEH GIANTZ R OLD if they would have signed Giambi. To me, that would be reason enough to sign the guy….because…well…fuck people.
A 1 year deal makes it tempting, but at some point we have to find out about Ishikawa. That time is ’09.
by Lars The Wanderer on Jan 6, 2009 7:43 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Option year too
So if he goes out and hits 35 bombs this year, A’s get to keep him next year too for only $5 mil. He must like the bay area, no matter what he says on letterman

I hope this is step one in a totally awesome A’s reunion tour!
Now how could they possibly swing deals to get Tejada, Hudson, Mulder, and Zito back?

I look forward to another season. I watched an intrasquad game in Nov., the arms look decent. I am kinda bummed that the big non-conference games are away this year (Wichita State, S. Carolina).

If the Giants had signed Giambi, I think he would have been Ryan Klesko without the D and OBP

You’re right. I just looked up his .373 OBP last season. I was thinking it was lower…that it declined in in ’07 and declined more last season.
Sorry Jason.

I passed this nugget of info along to an A’s fan friend over dinner tonight and she laughed for about five minutes straight.

Me: “Man, Trader Joe’s chicken nuggets are really flavorless and mushy.”
Wife: “Maybe we made them wrong”

“Oh, whoops. These are tofu.”

Tofu Nuggets are like bengie Molina hitting clean-up.
The thing itself is good, it’s just that it’s in the wrong role, and both are a substitute for the real thing, but a very poor one.

Morningstar Farms Chikn nuggets are surprisingly good
They’re tasty and the texture isn’t too weird.

Wonder what A's fans feel about his return
Jason Giambi’s first series back in Oakland as a NY Yankee was where I saw two of the funnier ballaprk fan responses to a former favorite:
1) There was the fan who hung a very long sign in the right field bleachers that simply said “BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO” (it was probably at least 25 feet long)
2) In his first AB, Giambi hit a foul ball back into the seats near 3rd base and the fan who caught it threw it back on the field.
My plans for 2009: getting married and attending Tim Lincecum Bobblehead Day.
