I said the Giants aren’t signing him because the money doesn’t make sense and that that’s a good decision. Which is true.

You said they’ve made dumb signings in the past which limits their spending now (if what Howie surmised is correct). However, I don’t think this makes them cheap. It just means they have to be smarter with their money. There is a difference between having money and not spending it (cheap) and not having the money to spend.

what’s, exactly, is the difference? Especially if you’re poor (not having money to spend) because of your past foolishness.

If the giants had unlimited financial resources could you still argue that “the money doesn’t make sense?”

The Giants are in the 4th largest market. They went cheap last year with a 70 something mill payroll. This year they are at about 90 mill which is where they have been for 5 or so years. Cheap is the word.

Actually it’s the 5th largest market (after NY, LA, Chicago, Balt/Wash) at least by Baseball Almanac’s numbers. Which also makes it the smallest two-team market in MLB.

Adoptive father to the All-Father. Does that make me the All-Grandfather?

by EliminateMe on Jan 6, 2009 3:08 PM PST up reply actions

The A’s are half a team at best.

by Norm Median on Jan 6, 2009 3:27 PM PST up reply actions

AT BEST!!!

But here’s my point: even if you say the Giants “own” 2/3 of the Bay Area market to 1/3 for the A’s, that means they get about a 4.8M person effective market (2/3 of 7.2M). That’s smaller than the Boston, Philly, Detroit, Dallas and Houston markets. The Giants are pretty much a mid-market team.

Adoptive father to the All-Father. Does that make me the All-Grandfather?

by EliminateMe on Jan 6, 2009 4:09 PM PST up reply actions

And the Giants don't have 4.8M...

…because not everybody in the Bay Area cares about baseball.

But a 2/3 – 1/3 split is still generous to the Giants. The Giants were running around 3.2M total attendance for the last several years before falling off to 2.8M this year. The A’s were down to 1.6M after averaging right around 2M for a number of years. That’s probably closer to 60% than it is to 2/3, but I’m talking very rough numbers.

Adoptive father to the All-Father. Does that make me the All-Grandfather?

by EliminateMe on Jan 6, 2009 5:55 PM PST up reply actions

Possibly more to the point

There is no such thing as the Balt/Wash “market.” Markets are, or were traditionally, defined by the reach of local stations. Areas served by one group of local network affiliates are a single market. Wherever you had a new group of local network affiliates you had a new market.

While most of northern virginia and the maryland/DC suburbs are served by the DC affiliates, Baltimore and the Eastern shore are served by the Baltimore affiliates. These are, as clear as can be, two separate markets. Now, because of the size of NoVa and the DC suburbs, the DC market is still quite substantial (and possibly larger than SF’s), but adding in the Baltimore population is just cooking the numbers.

Get the hell out the way Bengie, Pablito's hit the show!

by Roger on Jan 7, 2009 7:29 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah, but if you had to cook the numbers, using crabcakes would definitely be the way to go.

Manny to the Giants was never serious

We inquired about him because no deal was done. Sabean wouldn’t be doing his job if he didn’t call and ask. He probably heard the same crap that Boras has been spewing all along which is ridiculous. Sabean probably then said, “Okay Scott, good luck with your 5 year deal.” and hung up. Come on Giants fans. You know better. It’ll be a lot better that we didn’t sign him.

Here’s where I see him ending up:

Interesting notion

Kind of debunked by Larry Baer of the Murph and Mac show this morning saying that they’re still in communication with Boras and Manny. But it doesn’t sound like they’ll get the years/dollars he’s looking for. My guess is we don’t leave the offseason with Manny, but it does sound like there’s some dialog between the Giants and Satan Boras.
