Giants radio affiliates in Oregon
If I'm not mistaken, some of the McCoven is living in the fine state of Oregon. I ask those of you who are Oregonians, a question:
KUIK (some weird combination of Kruk and Kuip?) is the Giants radio affiliate in Oregon. The station is located in Hillsboro, outside of Portland. Could someone living in Salem get signal for the station to listen to Giants games? Are there other radio options up there, aside from MLB Radio? Thanks very much in advance.

I’ve gotten KNBR on the car radio late at night camping east of there… real late at night. Got to hear the end of a game, at the expense of my camping tranquility.
My dad lives in Salem, I’ll ask him.

Thanks! If you don’t mind, can you ask what TV options a Giants fan would have there, outside of MLB.tv or Extra Innings?

He says there ain’t jack on TV, except what they decide to put on the Fox weekend game, or ESPN – which are rare in the post Bondsian era – or Braves games on TBS (and I suppose Cubs games on WFN?)… I work odd hours in a room with poor radio reception here in SF and I listen to games on Gameday Audio

You can’t even get that station in downtown Portland, much less Salem.

KUIK--1360 AM
I live in Salem…occasionally you can get it….but the signal is pretty weak.
They also pre-empt the G’s a lot for other programming like NASCAR every Saturday, UW football on Sundays, etc.
Also, a lot of the games they do broadcast are tape-delayed a few hours until some of their talkl shows are completed (usually the Jane Carroll show)

1360
Not sure about Salem, but in Portland 1360 comes in pretty good, but Oregon State baseball is their #1 priority during the baseball season. At night, KNBR usually comes in good enough on 680.
No TV options.

My family up there roots for both the Mariners and the Giants. Mariners for proximity, and the Giants because they live near the SK Volcanoes.

Hey, Baron
Have your relatives been to a Volcanoes game yet? I love their logos and would really like to buy a polo shirt or something, but the last time I checked their online store the selection was pretty lame. Do they have any team merchandise, and is it any good?

They sell logo’d shirts, hats, sweat shirts, polo shirts and damn near anything else you can thin of. I have season tix and live about 5 minutes from the stadium.
As far as getting the Giants on any source besides mlb tv on the interwebs, the mlb package on comcast is the only option I’ve found and it seems like they don’t carry one or two games per week just to piss me off.

Just outside Portland (Gresham)
I get KNBR at night but it is shady at best. I can’t say i have ever found the Giants on any other radio format, not that I have given it much effort.
As far as your viewing options go…it’s either mlb.tv, extra innings, or my personal favorite, a bar with extra innings. For the money extra innings will give you much better quality with the downside being the higher price and the facking East Coast games airing immediately prior to the Giants that run too long.
There is a pretty decent mix of fandoms here, but most lean towards the Mariners. The Giants are decently represented as there are a ton of former Bay Area residents in Oregon. You will find most “Oregonians” do not really care much for us Californians. I have never heard a decent argument as to why, but most think it’s our fault natural inflation occurs and tend to blame Californians for causing their home values to have increased three fold in the last five years, whatever the issue is with that.

It’s hard for a Californian to understand where an Oregonian is coming from with the resistance. I ahve lived here for twenty years and feel like I have only gotten Oregon the past five to ten or so. First things Californians need to realize is you should not come into Oregon and try to change things to “how we did it in California”. This angers and embitters an Oregonian more than anything. When you get out of California for a while you see that Californians kinda have a chip on their shoulder about how great California is. Well, we were taught that in school, right? I remember that, at least, “oh, our state is the richest, it’s the only state that can support itself, etc.” (You know they do the same thing in Texas, and New York, though.) That’s great, nothing wrong with having pride about where you are from, but just because you come form such a great place doesn’t mean that everybody else wants to be just like you. See also: how Southern Californians come up to Northern California and how they act. Be respectful of natives and their customs. Bla bla bla.

I know for me the biggest problems I have with Californians up in Oregon is that they’re largely responsible for the vast and not-so-good changes to my hometown. I’ve been away for 12 years now and every time I get back there I’m amazed at how much more congested and shitty the place has become. Not that I would ever want to, but driving is a bitch and it takes a good hour to get from one side of town to the other. That never used to be the case. Poor planning and a lack of any suitable infrastructure are the biggest problems, but the non-natives moving up there and using what was my back-yard as their personal playground doesn’t sit well. My hometown has turned into a seasonal resort town like Tahoe and it bothers the piss out of me because I don’t ever remember it like that when I was growing up.

Yeah, but I live downtown, I don’t have to drive in any of it if I don’t want to. There’s traffic everywhere, the key is to live where everyone is driving to. I guess that’s not really an option in SoCal. I was down there two weeks ago and it took six hours to drive from Pasadena to Palm Springs. WTF?
by satyricrash on Jan 7, 2009 10:37 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
The amount of time it took you to go from Que Pasadena to PSprings is the same reason why I leave at 10pm-later when I drive from Anaheim to the parents home in SJ.
Some freeways have Fastrack, and I really dont mind to spend $10 for a one way trip for 15 miles. The picture explains it all: (91 between Anaheim and Corona)

I go to school at the University of Oregon and there is no TV channel or radio station that covers the Giants. At night, you can get KNBR in your car. I have no clue why it’s only at night. The only tv option is Extra Innings, the Giants are blocked out on MLBTV.

If I remember from electronics class in days of yore, it’s only at night because the ionosphere is higher at night and the reflected radio waves can therefore travel farther (radio waves reflect off the ionosphere – it’s why shortwave radio travels so far). It’s like holding a mirror above a candle – as you raise the mirror, the circle of light grows.
by Johnny Disaster on Jan 6, 2009 7:23 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
The ionosphere is correct
But I remember the cause specifically being that, in the daytime, the sun’s bombardment of the ionosphere makes it unstable, and thus a poor reflector of radio frequencies. But at night, the ionosphere settles down, becomes smooth, and therefore becomes an excellent reflector.
And that is why most radio stations are required to lower their power outputs at nightfall – so they don’t step all over their neighboring cities’ signals. And yet, due to the nature of the reflectance, it’s entirely possible that more distant places than Gresham or Bend or Salem get the SF signal even better – it just depends on the particular atmospherics (and geographies) of a place. I recall picking up Denver radio stations late at night, as a boy in Sacramento.

I thought it was that the energy of sunlight allowed the ionosphere to be lower in the atmosphere (lower altitudes requiring more energy to excite ions) and conversely at night the ions can only exist higher up, but it was a long time ago and I may be wrong… not really important in the larger scheme of things I suppose.

huh?
When you sign up for satellite TV, they give you local channels based on your billing zip code.
If you can use a friends address (or parents) who lives in the BA, you will get all of the BA local channels. I did this when I lived in Socal to get Giants games on tv.
by FairweatherFan on Jan 6, 2009 10:02 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
That’s weird, because I was just in SoCal where my dad is and his DirectTV was tied to his Oakland address and when I visited down there before he got all the BA channels, but now — this past Xmas — he doesn’t, even though nothing in his billing has changed. He said it had to do with satellite clouds, or something, which sounds like a plot device from a later day Star Wars fiasco, if you ask me.
Baroness, you best bet is to just watch/listen online. I had ExtraInings for a few years, and that’s great, but I hated to have to have cable, because I end up watching TV all the time and never get any work done.
by satyricrash on Jan 6, 2009 10:47 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
The satellite company has no idea where you are physically located.
They have no way of knowing where you are receiving the signal from. It is a 1 way transmission, much like listening to the radio.

I'm not sure on the radio part..
But if you’re looking for TV the best option is to find a friend in the bay area with a high upload speed internet connection and cable there. Then buy a Slingbox and hook it up there. When I was in the frozen north I had a Slingbox at home and could watch the games. You’re a little behind the action, but it’s a pretty good quality.
