I Disagree

I think some of these fringe guys are kinda fun to discuss about!

by xanthan on Jan 6, 2009 8:10 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Plus

last year at this time it’s quite possible, if not probable that Pablo Sandoval wouldn’t have been ranked at this point (he didn’t make the BA Top 30 and Brute had him in the low 40s I think on his annual 50) and Alex Hinshaw probably wouldn’t have even been discussed. Three years ago (after his middling Sally season) would Jonathan Sanchez have been placed this high? There are rocket risers to be found down here.

Get the hell out the way Bengie, Pablito's hit the show!

Yup, good point. Hopefully some of these back-end guys will shoot up the ladder and make themselves relevant.

Credit where credit's due

BP had Sandoval at #9 last year.

..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

by Cookyman on Jan 6, 2009 10:10 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Goldstein is pretty solid. My subscription at BP lapsed and I’ve having trouble justifying another year. The only reason I would is for Kevin Goldstein and Nate Silver. The rest of what they do is getting to be worthless. Most of it I can figure out on my own and what I can’t, I can get for free from a number of great sites.

I agree

There are a couple of decent writers there, but Goldstein and the stats are the main reasons I still pay for a subscription. They did some great stuff a few years back, but new, free sites like FanGraphs and tangotiger are tough competition for BP. Tango in particular has done some great work. I’m surprised it took so long for a team to sign him.

Hey, speaking of credit where it's due

I adopted Pablo way back in 2007, virtually purchasing the Sandoval bandwagon!

Sanchez

Jonathan might have started the season slow but he closed with a flourish. The last few months in Augusta followed up with masterful starts in the playoffs with San Jose.

by wilriv21 on Jan 6, 2009 1:07 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

The only list

The only Giants prospect list I saw Pablo Sandoval make last year was John Sickels’, which runs just beyond 30 for most teams. I don’t recall Brute’s rankings, but if he had Pablo even in the 40’s he may have been ahead of most.

As for Jonathan, I think whether he would have been in the top 30 would have depended on whether one valued his four-plus K/BB ratio and well over a strikeout per inning or his so-so 4.08 ERA more highly. I would think most would have ranked Jonathan in at LEAST the top 30. IIRC he was promoted to the playoffs for San Jose and looked good there. Go to www.calleaguers.com and look at scouting reports. As I recall, the scouting report on Jonathan based on his pitching at San Jose was high on him.

For what it's worth

We had Pablo at #46 last season. Hinshaw wasn’t ranked, but quite literally was the #52 on our list of our Top 50 (EME and Ishikawa tied at 50, and we decided to include both). Hinshaw would’ve been the next on the list.

Rohlinger

Nelson95’s quote in poll #27 described me:

Rohlinger had a great first half and did well after his promotion to Connecticut. He struggled in the majors, but it seems like the voters here are punishing him for the September callup.

I hope Ryan gets back to what he was doing when he got the callup. It’s not his fault the 3rd base cupboard was bare.

They say some players get out of bed hitting; Pablo Sandoval doesn't wait that long

by bgunn on Jan 5, 2009 7:19 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

No

He gets punished because he hasn’t had any good numbers anywhere, except for those ~160 ABs in Connecticut.

McBryde. He’ll almost certainly never hit any better than Rajai Davis, but (a) that has some value, and (b) his arm is strong enough that he might be just as good a relief prospect as Quirarte, Pichardo, Perdomo, et al.

by Evan on Jan 6, 2009 6:28 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Strength

It appears to met that Mike McBryde needs more strength to become a good hitter. His arm, however, is legendary. Maybe the Giants SHOULD make him a reliever. He could pinch hit for the pitcher and then relieve him (which would be much tidier than the pitcher’s relieving himself).

for me the helium matter goes…Snyder was a good prospect, then he got promoted to AA midseason and did bad. So I remember the bad, not the good. King, Sanchez, Quirarte had their good periods recently and have not disappointed us yet.

Marcello and others, you had to end it someplace. And thanks for the threads!
But IF we went longer, we could vote on JUAN CARLOS PEREZ (likely patrolling CF in San Jose soon), Sundrendy Winster, Julio Isturiz, Daryl Maday and Oliver Odle. And more likely to put that future rocket phenom on the list eventually.

Next vote, I am writing in Juan Carlos Perez! We need a slugging centerf
for now, voting Hedrick—has progressed steadily but slowly in our system.
Is 26, but in 65 innings at Conn, they hit 176 against him, 21/74 BB/K

Meanwhile—Pichardo—they only hit 214 off him in 61 innings in Conn. last year
Snyder in those 12 starts after jumping up to Conn. saw his ERA triple from 2 to 6, while guys hit 308 off him.

I’ll be putting together a summary post once we finish the vote for 30 with some topic starters such as most over ranked, most under ranked, etc.

I’ve tried looking, but I can’t find Juan Carlos Perez anywhere (MiLB.com, The Baseball Cube, First Inning). Can you link me to anything about him?

I’ve been considering doing another nonGROUPTHINK top 25 or 30 or 40 or 50 fanpost, where people could post their personal top lists, and compare them against the Community list, the Sickels list, the coming BA list etc. This wouldn’t step on your wrap up summary post’s toes would it? Or maybe you cold wrap up personal top 30 lists into your summary post?

Nope, it wouldn’t be stepping on Matos at all. I guess it could be wrapped up into the summary post, but it might be better to have it as it’s own thing, especially if you want to include comparisons to the other lists.

I think the Juan Carlos Perez talk is very early.

I love his story, don’t get me wrong.

But this guy is as raw as possible, and he put up those amazing numbers in what’s equivalent to Division II of community college baseball. I love the potential, but I highly doubt he’ll be in San Jose before 2011, if then.

Perez

Agreed. This guy is probably a long way off. He’s probably picked up some bad habits swinging for the fence in a small park and he probably has not faced very good pitching. Also, remember he tore his ACL and missed the fall instructional league. I think this guy is either going to SK or Arizona after extended spring training. If you compare him to Fairley, remember Fairley was a first round pick and Perez lasted until the 13th round. I say be patient with him and don’t be surprised if he has a season close to what Fairley had this year in Arizona.

Perez ACL injury reference

I got the ACL injury info off of the following link:

http://baseballevolution.com/richard/sfprospects4.html

It’s several months old so who knows if it will be an issue. I remember last year we kept hearing that Merkin Valdez’ fastball had lost some zip after coming back from the Tommy John surgery, but we all saw it was back in the spring and he made the team.

by nelson95 on Jan 7, 2009 8:28 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

On the other hand...

…there’s Waldis Joaquin, who was reportedly throwing 95 regularly in 2007, his first season after TJ surgery, but everytime I saw him in 2008, both in Augusta and San Jose, he was hitting 92, maybe 93.

Not been following these discussions recently, but was wondering why Snyder hasn’t got on yet. I know he got lit up after promotion to CT but it seems a little harsh to penalize him that harshly for less than half a years pitching. He followed up a good year in Augusta by leading the San Jose staff (the other 5 of who have been on for a while) in both ERA & tRA before being promoted. He’s also a year younger than Pucetas & English & has put up better K rates than Pucetas & Tanner the last couple of years & the same as Alderson at San Jose last year.
