We don't really have that much pitching depth. We don't really have that much pitching depth. FOR GOD SAKE, VERUCA, DON'T GO FAKE TRADING JONATHAN SANCHEZ. We don't really have that much pitching depth

Personally, I think that Tom Verducci has perhaps correctly identified a benchmark that separates extreme physical specimens from less extreme physical specimens. If so, then I have a lot of faith in Timmeh, because he seems to be an extreme physical specimen. Less so in Sanchez, sadly.
The 2008-2009 offseason is driving me sane!

Christ. Just when I had finally gotten over the Giants idiotically pushing Lincecum like a rented mule in a pathetic attempt to drum up some fan interest.

A pathetic, soon to be successful attempt to get Lincecum a record arbitration award.

do you think that was a wise choice?
Whether you’re a big believer in pitch counts or not, it’s not worth it to risk that, especially so early in the franchise player’s career. His innings have been increasing, and of course he has that huge college workload. I think he finished first in pitcher abuse points, or maybe second. Right around CC anyway, who many people seem to think the brewers handled irresponsibly because they knew they wouldnt re-sign him.

Yes - To Do Outwise Would Have Justifiablely Pissed Of Timmy
You just can’t hold an athlete back from going after something like this and expect him to accept it.

Sometimes teams have to limit players to prevent injury. You never go out to try to hold back a player just to piss them off, but sometimes its for the best.

Do You Really Think Tim Could Be Convienced He Was Increasing His Injury Risk?
I don’t I think he, his father, and his agent would believe the Giants are limiting his shot at the award to limit the extra earnings he can get for getting the award. There is just no way I can see any team doing this in the circumstances the Giants were in with Timmy.

Really? I’m sure there are many teams that would have been more careful. Not everyone handles pitching staffs like the Giants.

I An Not Buying This
No team is going to hold back their ace when he has a real shot at the Cy Young. They will all want to stay on his good side and increase the likelihood that they can re-sign him beyond his controlable years. None of them would risk pissing him off in this way.

I guess here is where we have to agree to disagree
Since I definitely don’t believe that. When it comes to choosing between pissing off your ace or risking injuring your ace, I believe many teams would rather anger him (as would I).

Though the ~62,000 difference between 1 & 2 is pretty amazing. This is kind of a subjective format and the amount of points per pitch count can be allocated differently based on your opinion.

It’s not subjective, but a little arbitrary.
You get increasingly more points for each pitch over 100.

While it’s not perfect, there has been some research done that backs up the theory that pitches after 100 tend to cause more and more trouble.

No One Is Agruing With That
What I at least argue is that the idea that the scale is the same as to when and how much for all pitchers is rediculous.
by giantsrainman on Jan 6, 2009 4:19 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
That is true. I think the stat still has some value. Maybe the exact number doesn’t matter much, or the placement on the list. It should give more of a ballpark idea. I guess this can be figured out in other ways (Innings pitched, for instance) but it’s still nice to have a statistic like this, which you can interpret along with other factors. And unless someone figures out a way to make the # of pitches change from pitcher to pitcher (from 100), I don’t think this is exactly arbitrary. It’s not perfect, but it is based on facts and research.
just my 2 cents
