There must be some reason....

why nobody seems to have mentioned Milton Bradley as a possibility for the Giants? I won't admit to knowing much, but it seems like he'd add the desperately needed bat.Would he be completely non-functional trying to play 1B? Would he just not want to? Is he a total prick and thus kryptonite to everyone? Is he asking for too much money? Injury concerns?

It just seems sort of weird that everyone's talking about Manny, when Bradley plays the same position, fills the same need, is the same sort of character risk, and would cost a lot less money. Now, someone comment and tell me the totally obvious reason I'm totally missing as to why he's a stupid idea, please.

milton bradley is also less good at baseball.

It's spelled "M-A-R-C-H-I-N-G-B-A-N-D."

I support inroywetrust in his support of The VD Special in his support of me supporting Roger Kieschnick in his quest to becoming the best Kieschnick ever to play professional baseball.

Actually he’s been pretty darn good when healthy. He had a nice season last year. Although his home park was Arlington, his away numbers don’t look too shabby (.290/.410/ .462) In ’07, He put up a line of .299/.379/.597 in Petco, albeit for half a season.

by Natto on Jan 4, 2009 9:33 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah

he’s sort of an injury risk, but that seems like it would keep his price down. Though now that I look at it, he’s only played in over 100 games once since 2005, so that’s more of a “definite” injury risk…

By mid season

he’d be getting in fights with the Chevron cars in left field.

So?

I’d rather deal w/ MB than MR.

Besides, anyone who doesn’t get along w/ JK is alrite by me.

Actually, I was just hoping someone would put together an image of Bradley fighting the Chevron cars. It wasn’t a condemnation of him

I don't really care about his attitude

I can put up with a punk, it’s the injuries that make him untouchable.

Royals Announcer Ryan Lefebvre

said this last year while announcing for the Royals during a game against Texas:

(Talking about Josh Hamilton) "Here’s a guy, with all the troubles he’s had, he’s showed that if you work at it, you can get your life back in order. And that would be a pretty good role model for Milton Bradley, who clearly has no control over himself, because it’s the same thing year after year …
This game, this country, really, if you follow baseball, has really embraced Josh Hamilton and I think they’ve wanted to do the same for Milton Bradley, but Milton Bradley has refused to allow himself to be put in that position.

The next day MB did this:

(Bradley heard the exchange on the clubhouse television and stormed up to the press box, looking for Lefebvre. Bradley was restrained by his manager and GM and never found Lefebvre, but the damage was done. He returned to the locker room and broke down in front of his teammates.
“I’m tired of people breaking me down,” Bradley told reporters. “All I want to do is play baseball, that’s it. Raise my family, raise my sons, so they’ve got a better life than me. I’m strong but I’m not that strong, you know? It wears on me.”)

I like that, but then again he is a professional and expected to act like one.

He's Terrell Owens

His quasi-sensitivity is an alternate form of diva behavior. I’m not sure that would fly so well in SF.

I always love something like that. Just like when a cartoon is published suggesting Islam is a violent religion, what is the first response? “Hey those people said we’re violent, we should start a huge riot where we blow things up and kill people.”

Bradley is signing with the Cubs

He’s also not the power hitter that Manny is, and he gets hurt alot. Let’s face it, this team needs Manny because they need his power. This team needs ANYONE that can hit, but Manny is the only one out there that makes everyone better as well.

Yeah

I realize he’s not as good as manny, but he’d also cost quite a bit less, and he’s 6 years younger. That’s the only reason I bring it up.

by bondslegend on Jan 5, 2009 9:55 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think the reason nobody has mentioned this

is that the Giants have no interest in signing Milton Bradley and Milton Bradley has no interest in playing for the Giants. (that seems like a couple of pretty good reasons not to mention it)

by FluLikeSymptoms on Jan 5, 2009 9:59 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

why nobody seems to have mentioned Milton Bradley as a possibility for the Giants?

I’m not quite sure.

The Only Reason To Sign An Outfielder Is To Sell Tickets - Manny Does This - Bradley Doesn't

The Giants thinking about Manny is all about butts in the seats and not about getting performance that matches the cost. I am sure the Giants know that the price to sign Manny would be a big overpay for the number of extra wins he actually adds. But they are considering it because of the extra buzz he provides that puts butts in the seats.

Milton Bradley is probalbly worth more net wins at a much lower cost but he just does not provide anywhere near the same buzz. Without this buzz there is just no reason to spend any more money on upgrading the outfield when we already have 4 outfielders that are projected to be league average or above.

It's true

That MR brings publicity and publicity brings $$$.

This is really the only reason from a business perspective to bring in MR.

It’s also a reason they might do it.

No wonder

No wonder the Rays were in the World Series in 2008 and the Giants weren’t. At two years for $16 million, I think Pat Burrell is a nice gamble. I know the Giants are concerned about Burrell’s fielding, but they badly need right-handed hitters and Pat has been a better hitter for long time than any present Giant.

The two years would fit their time frame, and the $8 million per season shouldn’t blow their budget. I think Burrell at two years for $16 million is a better signing than Edgar Renteria at $2.5 million more.

by sharksrog on Jan 5, 2009 1:08 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Signing Burrell Would Only Bench One Of Lewis Or Ishikawa

This would delay the development of the one benched and likely not adding any extra wins. What would be the point?

by giantsrainman on Jan 5, 2009 1:39 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It’s kind of sad that a 28 year old player is still considered to be in development

Well, Renteria adds much more value to us than Burrell does to the Rays. Remember before Renteria we were counting on a guy who started last season in High A to start at SS (and he didn’t hit very well in high A either…)

by Viliphied on Jan 5, 2009 1:40 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

the marginal gain for the Giants

isn’t that great, unless Burell plays 1B. My guess is that either the Giants mgt or Burrell hisself was not willing to move to the IF. It’s not like a Manny or Bonds situation where the bat far out weighs the corner OF that gets left in the lurch.

From What I Recall It Was Dunn That Really Didn't Want To Play 1B

Burrell was willing but the Giants thought he would be almost as bad defensively at 1B as LF.

Bradley throws Right-handed.

So does Pat Burrell making both of them really bad ideas for 1B if the D is already bad to begin with.
