Ah, an out clause!
The pair of relievers forged contract agreements with the Giants shortly after the free-agent signing period began last Nov. 14

Dennys Reyes.

What’s with the corporate tie in here?
Was he conceived in the bathroom?

good point, but I think the Renteria contract is the only one where the Giants jumped the gun considering what followed. Affeldt was the best lefty reliever (non closer) on the market and would have been snapped up by someone else, and Howry signed a one year deal anyway, although perhaps you can make the case that the Giants could have gotten an even better reliever with a one year deal had they waited.

I don’t buy the gripe on the Rentria was signed too soon. At least not yet.

Just to be clear I understand and respect the "he will not be worth the gamble crowd". I don’t agree with them but logically I can see where they are coming from. I don’t get the "Sabean moved too to quickly" stance.

The figure I see most often says the Giants paid about $2M too much. (Strangely this is the amount of his signing bonus.) But really does the "He was signed too soon" crowd think the A’s or Twins wouldn’t have been looking at him for around $7M once Furcal was off the market? Why wouldn’t a team wanting 2nd base help (say the Met’s) be in on him around that rate?

I don't know about the Renteria signing..

Renteria and Furcal were really the only two “good” shortstops on the market. Furcal was looking for 3 years and the Giants didn’t want to go that far, wheras Renteria was willing to take a 2 year contract. I’d rather overpay a bit for a shorter contract as well as not having to go to the more expensive, longer, more injury prone guy.

Yeah it’s kind of tough with 2 shortstops and maybe 4 teams looking for shortstops.

When I checked out the article, the front-page link said “Giants’ Affeldt, Howry smarly sign early.”
