I thought I would find a gathering of the Bear Family from John Waters A Dirty Shame here. So I can’t say am all that disappointed. I am not enthused but defiantly not disappointed.

I clicked this link thinking to myself “Please don’t be about a fan rally for the signing of Manny”.
And here it is.
And here I am.
I’m not sure what to say…
Goddamnit.

Reading this comment almost sent me to the unemployment line based on my boss crusing by at the exact moment I read this comment. Bullet = dodged.

Justin Killian, a 36-year-old lawyer who helped organize the rally […said] “He’ll be like the rain man, just go up and hit.”
Manny would be the metsrainman.

Who’s in/out?
Last night I had In-N-Out. Every few months I get a strong craving and must have it. Then I have a burger and I realize, once again, that it’s not all that great. It’s an annoying cycle.

BUT!
if you buy alot of the fries and paint them black and then affix them to your hat…you can look like a carbohydrate version of Manny Ramirez.

The fries are good, but I get angry when you get the little chinga pieces at the bottom. For some reason I seem to get a lot of those there.

Speaking of the Manny Sweepstakes
Did anyone else catch Ray Ratto on KNBR a few days ago? I realize the guy talks out of his ass most of the time, but he presented either his theory or what he believes to be the Giants actual rationale for not going after Manny, aside from the obvious length-of-contract explanation:
a) The Giants believe that due to the crappy economy and its effect on baseball (bad season ticket sales, advertisers dropping their stadium signage deals, etc.), lots of small- and mid-market teams will be virtually giving away good players with large, long-term contracts as the season goes on. Thus, the Giants could pick up a younger slugger at bargain basement prices in June or July. I think there’s a lot to this.
b) Ratto claims MLB asked each team to draw up a plan for the following scenarios: 10% drop in revenues in ‘09 and 20% drop in revenues in ’09. The Giants, unsolicited, submitted a plan based on a 30% drop in revenues, which could indicate that Neukom and Co. are scared shitless about luxury box and season ticket sales and how much money they’ll have to play with.
Again, what you think of Ratto’s sources and/or theory plays into this, but it’s an interesting perspective that I hadn’t considered.

Generally in business, one makes several budgets, especially when revenue losses are projected. Depending on the projected losses, a business would make at least three (10, 20 and 30). I had budget classes that required 40 and 50 as well.
It an interesting exercise, but to have to do in reality that comes down to some hard choices.

teams that haven’t won one since 1954 shouldn’t be so concerned with losing money for the year. Manny’s contract in 2010 will be paid for with the expiring contracts of Winn, Johnson, Roberts, and Molina. Take the one year hit and try to win a freaking World Series in our lifetimes.

granted but this for the entire organization not just player’s salaries. And then again it’s just guessing since we don’t know the beginning dollar amount is. My comments are directed at acquiring Manny but in running a business in general.
by timmeh on Jan 30, 2009 10:33 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
someone made the point yesterday that with the money Manny is asking for, you can go out and buy yourself five solid free agents, with the market the way it is right now. It’s not only out there for the Giants this year, it’s out there for everyone. I think the Giants’ are happy right now with every position except for third base, but it must be awfully tempting when you see players like Hudson, Abreu, Dunn, and some others who are better than what you have, and quite affordable.

Maybe I’m not being clear, which is entirely possible.
As in all business – they are selling a product with the intent to turn a profit. No business is willing going to take a hit (intentionally lose money) because the public demands it. If they choose to change the $ for players (whether increasing, decreasing) that’s just one aspect in dealing with the organization’s budget. So if there are projected revenue losses other parts of the budget will take the hit which will either prevent profit loss or minimize it.

Hey, I live in Queens and I bathe daily!! Well, not today but most of the time. Not everybody in Queens is a moronic Met fan. Stupidity is having your team’s owner lose 700 million dollars in a Ponzi scheme and then not understand why he doesn’t want to buy a player who wants 25 million a year.

Me likey maps
Funny with being born in NYC but knowing nothing about the place finally looked at a map to find out where the five boroughs were. Wow didn’t know Brookln and Queens were on Long Island. Knew LG airport was in Queens because of Shea Stadium being in Queens but did not know JFK was also in Queens.
So that is the Brooklyn Bridge? Where does it take you to? Ah, Brooklyn. Where is the upper east ? Oh is that where Wall St is? Where is Yankee Stadium? In The Bronx? What is all the green space in the city? Central Park – who knew?

I have news for you. I’ve lived in New York all my life and didn’t know that Queens was considered part of Long Island until a couple of months ago. They started a Long Island music Hall of Fame and started inducting people like The Ramones, Paul Simon and LL Cool J into it, and I know that all of them were born and raised in Queens. That’s when I found out that Queens was in Long Island.

Queens & Brooklyn are part of Long Island geographically, but from a socio-cultural standpoint, I’d say that, for almost everyon, Long Island = Nassau & Suffolk Counties. Kings and Queens need not apply.

exactly. To someone that lives in the five boroughs, Long Island might as well be in another state. It’s completely different. It’s all houses and trees, and if you want to go to a store, you have to drive ten miles to the nearest mall. It’s also 90 % white and Republican, although it is slowly changing.

Nah
just look across the street and there it is. Oh and the Holland Tunnel can take you to NJ. Manhattan is really an island, Long Island too. And Staten Island. Now I know where the East River is and that the Hudson separates NY and NJ. Is that Rikers there? Can take the Triborough bridge all over the place.

You won’t find it on any current map, but the Polo Grounds were in Harlem. Which is in Manhattan. I’ve met some people who think Harlem is its own borough.
