Crede/Ishikawa platoon?
I am still on the fence about whether or not we should sign Joe crede, even if it comes at some kind of a discount.
I understand alot of the upside that could come with it, and have read the 'Pro Joe' article, and articles like it, but I would just like to really give our in house options some kind of an oppurtunity before we deem them unworthy. I think bowker, or more so Ishikawa could put up similar numbers while costing us only money that we are already spending. I am pretty satisfied with getting to watch Sandoval at third, and Ishikawa at first this season. I wanna see what they can do, and I am afraid of just bringing in a more injury prone Pedro Feliz, (as I have heard him be referred as) to take away time from them.
One senerio that wouldnt bother me if we signed crede would be platooning him with Ishi, and having sandoval moving across the diamond when the other is playing.
Now I say this with ZERO idea of how crede fairs against righties, or what travis' numbers were against lefties in AAA and his 33 games with us last year, so feel free to tell me if they did ok Righty on Righty and Lefty on Lefty.
But the benefits I see with doing this are the following:
If Travis does not hit lefties it would give us a better option then Phelps for him to split time with.
It would allow Sandoval to get time at both first and third throughout the season.
They both are good defenders so defense wouldnt be subtracted depending on the opposing starting pitcher.

Would hope SF does not forget about Ishikawa. Believe he will be out of options and merits more than just a quick look this spring.

Agree with you. Like Ishikawa’s tools. Want to see him get a fair shot.

Crede and Ishikawa wouldn’t platoon because Ishikawa is a 1Bman and Crede is a 3Bman.

maybe he means Ishi/Pablo vs righties and Pablo/Crede vs. lefties

Nope. Still don’t see why you pay good money for a good defensive third basemen that is always hurt. Then after you spend these millions of dollars, you go put him in a platoon with a catcher that hasn’t proven himself at third yet, and a first baseman that couldn’t hit the pitching in AA two of the last three years. Its definitely still retarded

Incentive Money? Don't kid yourself
He is an all-star and a client of Scott Boras. He is not gonna sign for rookie money and agree to platoon so that no team will sign him for big money next year

on what planet is Joe Crede an all-star?
he made the all-star team this year cause he started hot, but I think even Scott Boras knows he aint gettin all-star money. He’s never really been that great.
by boonitez on Jan 4, 2009 1:58 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I think he just meant that boras will try to bring up his all-star appearance when negotiating. Sure, he won’t get money comparable to the top all stars, but that doesn’t mean boras won’t use it as a selling point.

good luck with that Scotty…
Boras: He was an all-star just last year!
Sabean: He posted a .770 OPS that year in a hitters park, hasn’t played a full season in 2 years, and has never posted an OBP higher than .323.
Boras: Fuck.

The tea leafs are still telling me Crede isn’t going to be a giant for less money than he made last year in a rich aurilia role. It would be a walking advertisement that Boras isn’t doing his job (and he can’t afford to do that these days with the Manny fiasco and all the bad press he gets.) His job is not to go out and get All-stars part-time gigs for chump change. Should he have been an all-star? Not a chance…but thats not the question here

Boras Doesn't Matter - Their Just Won't Be Any Better Offers
All anyone is going to offer is a 1 year $5M deal with incentives above and a vesting second year if the incentives all kick in.
by giantsrainman on Jan 5, 2009 9:23 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
but at least that certain guy
had actually been good in the past. Crede has only every actually been good once in his career. Besides that one year, he has not only been crappy, but also usually injured. There’s actually a pretty decent selling point for a guy that won a Cy Young somewhat recently, had never put up a high ERA, and never missed a start in his career.

I think we should give Ishi some time at 3rd. It’s a good Plan B if Nate doesn’t work out there.

Why platoon Crede and Ishi?
Sandoval’s platoon splits are as large, if not larger.
They could both use some help against lefties.

crede doesn’t hit lefties.
I think signing crede would lead to a pablo/phelps platoon at first. should be an improvement on defense, but i’d rather give ishi a year to succeed or fail.

yeah, the one with the more words and senses.
but i also looked at his last three years:
vs RHP .276/.314/.495
vs LHP .224/.299/.375
Which admittedly includes a lot of time as damaged goods.
Either way, he makes no sense in a platoon. Aurilia would be better, more likely to be healthy, and probably cheaper.

Randy Johnson Is The Same Risk For His Bad Back
by giantsrainman on Jan 4, 2009 11:45 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Not really. Johnson just held up for nearly 200 IP, and for the most part has been very durable over the course of his career.
Joe Crede hasn’t been healthy in over 2 years. He’s only played 150 games twice in his career. And he pretty much has been mediocre.
by Hobbes2d on Jan 5, 2009 12:11 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Randy's Back Wasn't An Issue Until 2 Years Ago And Neither Way Crede's
Randy Missed most of 2007 (just like Crede). The only difference is that Crede had a relapse in the second half of 2008 and Randy didn’t. If the Giants doctors think Crede’s back is now healthy I am fine with the risk as he is much younger then Randy and therefore should be more likely then Randy to be able to heal properly.
Both are risks and you are just being foolish thinking you can judge this risk better then the Giants and their medical experts. Same applies to Bhaakon.
by giantsrainman on Jan 5, 2009 12:26 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think I'm BETTER at judging the risks than the Giants Doctor's
I think that no one is good enough at judging those risks.
If I’m right 10% of the time, and the Giants doctors are right 40% of the time, we’re still both wrong most of the time, whether I’m worse it it or not.

Not an issue until two years ago?
Johnson missed most of the 1996 season, when he was forced to undergo surgery for a bulging disk in his back. He has experienced chronic back problems since that time, although he has been able to control it with anti-inflammatories, etc. enough to stay of the D.L. for most of that time. Given his size and motion, Randy’s right knee and lower back absorb most of the pounding, and both have bothered him (and both have landed him on the D.L.) for years now.
Get the hell out the way Bengie, Pablito's hit the show!

Agreed. I remember a number of times in the past decade when the cameras pan over to show him going into the clubhouse to lay down in between innings to keep the pressure off his back. Hopefully it holds up for this season

On his incentive portion of the deal wonder when the extra $$$ kick in – 125 innings? 140 innings? 150 innings?
by wilriv21 on Jan 5, 2009 11:05 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Fair Enough
My bigger point is that if the Giants Medical Staff thinks Crede’s risk is comparable or less then Randy’s then who are we to question their judgement?
by giantsrainman on Jan 5, 2009 11:06 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Crede was awful defensively last year. I doubt he’ll get better since his back is a mess.
