OT: 360 or PS3?

Attention all video game players: your opinions are requested.

I've been informed by my wife that my birthday present will be either a 360 or a PS3, whichever I choose.  Yes, I am a lucky man.  And of course, I'm having trouble picking between the two.  That's where you come in.

I do know a little about them both, but I'd like any insights you might have about them.  As I understand it, the pros for PS3 include the Blu Ray capability, the potential power of the Cell processor, and free internet.  The pros of the 360 include lower price and the very slick Xbox live (although you have to pay for it). I'm also under the impression that most of you have 360's, and it would be awesome to be included in a McCoven MLB 2K9 league.

Is there one you'd suggest over the other? Is there something I've missed that I should know? Many thanks I give for any suggestions.

360

especially if you can get them to get you a 1 yr XBL membership ($50) to account for the price difference.

It has a better slate of exclusive games, and Blu-Ray players are A) not THAT great of a step up from upconverted DVDs, and B) are rapidly dropping in price

The 360 has a bigger and, by most accounts, better game library. So if you really want to spend a lot of time playing, you’ll probably get the most out of your investment – at least immediately – if you get the 360. I have no idea how the game libraries will balloon out over the next few years, but to the best of my knowledge the 360 is the better gamers console.

I actually like the PS3, though. It’s a really, really great multi-media platform, and it has enough good games to tide over most gamers.

It probably comes down to whether or not you’re more interested in the strength of the X-Box’s gaming library or the convenience and power of the PS3’s multi-media capabilities. I’d also take a quick look at the games you can get on either console. It might just be that the games you really want to play you can only play on one console, though these days single-console games are far more rare than they once were.

the only reason to buy a PS3 over an 360 is the blu-ray player. the 360s game selection is farrrrrrr superior to the PS3.

this

and most people seem to have the 360, so if you’re looking to play with friends online then the 360’s the better choice.

by boonitez on Jan 3, 2009 12:26 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I have to disagree

I think the PS3 has far more variety, and now that it’s coming into its own I think it has a stronger library than the 360. 2009 also looks like it’ll be a great year for the PS3. On top of all the great multiplatform games (I’ve been waiting for Street Fighter 4 for way too long…) the exclusive list includes Killzone 2, God of War 3, Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, etc.

Personally, I’d go with the 360, but it all comes down to what kind of games you prefer. Unless you prefer having all your media needs in one box, Blu-Ray is slowly becoming a non-factor since BR players are coming down in cost.

Have a look at some of these exclusives that came out for the systems this year or will come out and see which tickle your fancy.: http://vbforums.gametrailers.com/showthread.php?t=256853

Keep in mind that if you get a 360, there’s the added bonus of sending strange messages to Grant on Live.

PS3 is lagging behind XBOX when it comes to game selection and online content. It is in deep 3rd place behind both Wii and 360 when it comes to just about everything. It’s overpriced and I don’t see them catching up anytime soon.

I’m a huge Civilization: Revolution nerd, and I check in with the official forums every now and again. If you have any desire to play multiplayer games, you have to go with 360. There’s a much bigger and more established online community. The PS3 Civ players have a terrible time finding anybody to play with.

by Grant on Jan 3, 2009 11:42 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I just got a 360 for Christmas and the temptation to buy Civ:Revolution is terrible.

It might only cost me my job, my grades and the love of my wife. and $39.99.

The simplicity is one of its best features; you can finish a game in a couple of hours. It’s not as deep as the other games, so it might not appeal to the hardest of the hardcore, but I love it.

And the controller works way, way better than you would expect it to. I thought not having a mouse and keyboard would drive me nuts, but I barely noticed.

by Grant on Jan 3, 2009 12:41 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

That's what kept me from buying it

I’m just skeptical of the longevity of it when you can finish a game in a couple of hours. Maybe it’s just because I’m used to Civ 3, but I don’t know. I’m badly tempted, but that one nitpick makes me reluctant. As a college student, I have to carefully apportion my gaming money. And by “carefully apportion” I mean “sell every old game I own, and skip lunch for a week”.

The different scenarios and acheivements keep me coming back. I would never have thought to try for a single city with 200 production, or to try and win with only one city.

That, plus the short(er) games are better for multiplayer games.

ps3

number of fellow PS3 owners i know who have had to return their PS3 for hardware failure: 1 (his BluRay drive didn’t work out of the box, and the place he bought it from let him pick a new one right there.)

Number of Xbox 360 owners I know who have had to return their 360s at some point in time:
All of them.

No doubt Xbox has a larger game library, unfortunately (or fortunately), I just don’t play enough to utilize it. I have several favorites, and they happen to be available across multiple platforms, not just one.

The rest of the time, I use it to watch Blu-Ray movies. I had enough of a hard time justifying the added expense of getting a 1080p TV, but it became much easier once i realized i wouldn’t have to pay several hundred dollars for a gaming system and another several hundred for a BD player.

I personally prefer the PS3, though I also have a 360 and a Wii.

There are more games on 360, though quantity != quality. PS3 has more downloadable games that I like.

Lots of folks go for the 360 over the PS3 due to price point. However, the $200 for a 360 Arcade versus $400 for a PS3 is a bit misleading. By the time you buy a hard drive for $50 or whatever, a wireless adapter for about $85, and an XBL subscription for $50, they just about even out in terms of price and features. That doesn’t even take into consideration the fact that the PS3 is a fantastic Blu-Ray player. If you’re a home theater guy, PS3 has an advantage.

The other thing about the hardware is that the 360 is just flat-out not as high build quality. They do fail a lot, and mine is extremely loud and tends to crash more often in my experience.

They both do most of the same things in terms of multimedia streaming, etc.

Definitely go look at the games. They both have exclusives that could sway your decision. I prefer the PS3 exclusives to the 360.

Despite my preference toward the PS3, if this is your first current-gen console, I recommend the 360. There are way more people with them, which means your friends will likely be on XBL, which is fun with people you know. Also, the Achievements on 360 are more fun and addictive that the PS3 trophy system. Ultimately, I always advocate getting both, or all three, but the 360 is a great introduction to this generation of consoles. With the large library of games, you’ll be able too find tons cheap and/or used. Just be prepared to spend a bit more upfront than you think (unless you get your wife to buy you the swanky Pro or Elite instead of the Arcade).

Oh, almost forgot the most important thing, given the context of this site. There are basically two baseball games out there anymore, 2K and MLB The Show. I’ve played both, and The Show is one of the best baseball games I’ve ever played (2K kind of sucks IMO). The new one will be out next month or in March I think. I spent SO many hours playing the Road To The Show mode in MLB 08, it’s rad… you get to create your player, choose a position, and then work your way through the minors up to the bigs, putting attribute points into stats, signing contracts, etc. It’s 2011, and the GIants have a badass first basemen who only goes by “The Professor.” He hits about .450, with 80+ homers and over 200 RBIs in a season. Also, over 100 SB ;). You can make it more realistic of course, but I prefer winning to reality. Besides all that, the graphics and presentation are incredible, great animations, and in general fantastic gameplay. One of the primary reasons I bought a PS3.

thanks for the very extensive review

At this point, I feel like it’s a matter of balancing the PS3’s potential & list of games vs. the vast amount of 360’s current users. I guess buying a PS3 entails hoping more people will end up buying one, and that developers will be able to tap into the Cell’s potential?

one problem with the ps3 and sony in general

Speaking as a developer, it’s MUCH more difficult to develop for the PS3. Microsoft, whatever else you want to say about them, are very developer-friendly.

honestly, i think the fundamental argument between these two platforms is what you’re going to primarily use your console for, long term: Games or Movies.
Each one dominates a respective market, imho.

Another thing

Backwards compatability. If you have a lot of PS2 games and are hoping to play those on the PS3, make sure you have the right model. 20, 60, and 80 GB are compatible. The rest are not. Most major Xbox games are compatible with the 360 if you have a hard drive and a connection to download the updates.

Get a Dreamcast

No but really, it depends on what you like to play. I’ve got a PS3 and a Wii and the Wii never gets played unless friends are over. I sometimes wish I had an Xbox because of Halo and Gears of War 2, but I get my fix on PS3 with games like Metal Gear Solid. My favorite function of PS3 (which I believe Xbox has as well) is that it doubles as a media center so I can stream audio and video files from my computer to my TV and HiFi in the living room. That’s the shiznit right there!

As far as games go, you’re always gonna have console-exclusive games. But for each system, you’re never gonna run out of fun games to play.

Some of my favorites recently are Prince of Persia and Little Big Planet – games that are relaxing to play. I’m slowly shifting to this genre because I’ve got a little one on the way and daddy can’t be playing Bioshock and GTA with a kid running around. But the graphics on these games are outstanding. This brings up another argument though. With Blu-ray, sometimes things look TOO real, which looks weird and unnatural. But it has it’s ups too – Jessica Alba in Into the Blue…that’s hot (even its a shitty movie).

Bottom line – I say PS3 because I only know PS3.

Why in the world did the Dreamcast flame out so quickly?

Wall-E for Best Picture 2008

by Useful_Idiot on Jan 4, 2009 9:45 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

There are several factors, but the main reason is likely the PS2. Sony established an enormous user base with the Playstation, which carried over to the next generation. The Dreamcast had many features that were ahead of its time such as online play and memory cards with screens, but being the first doesn’t always equate with success. It was still pretty bg in Japan though and continued to see support long after it died out in the States.

by Natto on Jan 4, 2009 12:15 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

The Dreamcast is still my favorite system though. Admittedly, I’m a Sega fanboy, but the system had a heckuva lot of good games. No launch lineup has ever topped the Dreamcast’s since. Soul Calibur, Sonic Adventure, NFL 2K, and more… good times.

PS3 and it's not even a fair fight.

1) Ever heard of the “Red Ring of Death”? Google that sum’ bitch and tell me how happy it would make you.

2) Gran Turismo poo-poos on every other game out there. Granted the newest full version of it won’t be available until next time we’re celebrating Festivus…but it’s a series that I’d wait a lifetime for.

3) To hell with exclusivity. Many publishers are already realizing that there isn’t much to be gained by not releasing their games on both consoles. Sure you might have to wait 6 months for it to be released on the PS3, but unless you’re a pimply faced teeny-bopper who’s playing the thing 15 hours a day, why must you be playing it the very day it comes out?

4) I’m a big fan of the larger corporate vision of Sony. The PS3 was developed just like the PS2 was…with a goal of not having to upgrade the system for a solid 10 years. I’d much rather invest my $$ in something that I know isn’t going to be obsolete the day I take it out of the box. Sony has kind of figured this thing out…it isn’t their first trip round the block like it is for Mr. Gates. Add to that the fact that even today, a good 13-14 years after the PS2 was released you’ve still got people buying them off the shelf and many of the games out there are available in a PS2 version as well. That’s something that Microsoft can’t say for their original Xbox.

5) Related to exclusivity a bit here…but I’m not a fan of all of the first-person shooters out there. Sorry, but I just don’t get hyped for that kind of a game. I’m probably the exception to the rule, but in my mind, that’s the only place where Xbox has a bit of an advantage on things. Because I’d much rather play Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, and either FIFA or Evo Soccer, to hell with the other system if that’s the only reason you’re buying it.

My point exactly....

8 years ago it came out and it’s still a viable alternate for those who aren’t willing to empty their wallets for a next-gen system. Xbox didn’t even make it 5 years until it was discontinued in 2006.

That's true

I play my PS2 all the time. The thing that bugs me about the PS3 is that its launch was nowhere near as good as the PS2’s. I bought my PS2 like 3 months after it came out, and there was already a lot of sweet games available, but the PS3 just seemed to take a long time to really look like a decent system. I mean, when Madden runs smoother on the PS2 than on the new system (as it did until this year’s version), then there’s a problem.

by scottishgiants on Jan 3, 2009 8:14 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Why I got a PS3

But my thinking was based on my need to have a Blu-ray player to play the new Band of Brothers Blu-ray edition. (Side review: a religious experience. Its interactive features, for crying out loud, is equivalent to a whole new book: newsreel footage, old photographs, animated maps, in-depth glossary, translations—and that’s not even talking about the image quality or the sound depth!) I found the new PS3 flavors (released in October last year, I believe) very reasonably priced for all it could do as a multimedia machine, DVD player, Blu-Ray disc player, and of course high-end console. I’ve only bought 2 games — a racing game and a WW2 game — but I’ve enjoyed both immensely despite being a n00b. (I’ll be getting a baseball game soon, and possibly LIttle Big Planet.) I also don’t envision ever liking playing against other players online, so the Xbox community aspect is not a factor for me.

re: valkyrie

my points for a good movie:

1) were the story, the events that make it up, and characters’ decisions reasonable given the circumstances? (ie. historical movies should be very believable, yet sci-fi obviously has wiggle room)

2) was the acting not terrible?

3) was it entertaining?

If you score a yes on all three, I will most likely say yeah, it’s a good movie. And I feel Valkyrie did. Tom Cruise isn’t a favorite of mine, but he did a pretty good job of portraying a likable WW2-era German, something we don’t really ever get exposed to.

SPOILER ALERT

Not that it’s much of a spoiler since we all know the plot didn’t go through, but I always err on the side of spoiler alerts. I was a bit shocked that Hitler was able to escape with minor bruises from the blast of the bomb that was just a few feet away from him. But whatever. It kept me on the edge of my seat for most of the movie, but I think they could have played it up do be even more dramatic than they did.

by UnleashTheGore on Jan 4, 2009 10:42 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree, I think it hit on all three of your points. The supporting cast as a whole did a very good job, and Tom Cruise was not bad himself, although if you’ve seen Mission Impossible or The Last Samurai then you pretty much know what you’re gonna get.

As for the result of the blast, the background info is pretty interesting (and the movie paid surprisingly close attention to detail). One of the officers at the meeting moved the briefcase to the other side of the table when it fell onto his foot, and the table protected Hitler from a great deal of impact from the blast. Also, Hitlers pants were blown completely off.

BoB interactive

Watch the BoB blu-ray three times, time permitting:

1) just the show
2) with the “interactive field guide” turned on, and set to “automatic”. It’s not obtrusive considering what it is, and in fact frequently adds to the drama and poignance of the action.
3) with the veterans’ filmed commentary turned on

If you’re interested in WW2 like I am, you might also want to know that the Blu-ray version of 2005’s The Great Raid, is a director’s cut that’s much more interesting and worth watching than the theatrical/DVD cut. Which is good, since that story needs to be more widely known.

by shanghaijim on Jan 4, 2009 5:26 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I’m an idiot, it took me several seconds to figure out what BoB stood for…

I’ve watched with some of the vets commentary, and I haven’t done the interactive field guide yet but I’ll make time. I can never get enough WWII history. My dad has a huge stash of WWII books so I borrow from him all the time. Just finished Joachim Fest’s Hitler biography.

You want the 360

I was the biggest PS3 fanboy there was, then I actually got to use one for an extended period and found out it just totally sucked. Then I bought a 360 and absolutely loved it. The online is better, the games are better, there really isn’t any noticeable performance difference, and it’s quite a lot cheaper. And, I never thought I’d say this, but the controller is better too.

If you can’t live without blu ray (which is pretty cool), then go for the PS3, but the internet browser is pretty terrible (at least it was when my roomate had one).

by UnleashTheGore on Jan 8, 2009 8:22 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Well,

yes, if you buy everything at the store, then it is. I managed to buy a perfectly acceptable (and legal) way to get the 360 wirelessly online for 20 bucks on ebay (brand new). It’s something by logitech (don’t remember what it’s called) that lets you hook pretty much anything up to your wireless router.

I even bought the system itself on ebay, only paid 160 bucks for the premium HDMI system, and it works perfectly. Most of the 360s go for under 200 on ebay, even HDMI ones, and many sellers sell them with a warrenty against RRODs. I know most people don’t want to do that, but if you want a deal there’s deals to be had. You could get a much cheaper elite that way, too.

However, if you’re a normal person and are buying everything at a store, then I guess they’re pretty close to even in price.

by bondslegend on Jan 8, 2009 9:52 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

gotcha

i’m definitely high on ebay, except when it comes to electronics. I pretty much don’t trust anyone after i bought an ipod that worked when I first received it, then wrapped it for my wife’s Xmas present, then when she opened it, it no longer worked and the period to return it was past due.

However, when I did buy guitar hero on ebay, they accidentally shipped me a gamecube. The seller was even nice enough to send me guitar hero and let me keep the gamecube free of charge.

I have both of them and I like ’em both.

For the PS3 LBP is awesome. The Show is really good and probably the closest we will get to MVP Baseball for awhile. I had a blast playing Uncharted, it was like how Tomb Raider should have been. I really want to pick up Valkryia Chronicles because I’ve heard good things about it. Blu-ray is pretty nice and the PS3 is a pretty awesome standard DVD player because I believe it up scales, or whatever you call it.

The 360 has XBL, which is cool — despite having to pay money for it — but if you buy a 1-year prepaid card it’s not too bad. Being able to stream NetFlix stuff over the 360 is insanely cool. I’d say it has a bigger game library than the PS3 does right now, but it probably depends on the types of games you like to play.

Lately, I’ve been playing our Wii the most probably (when I’m not on LBP). We got Boom Blox for Christmas and it’s a really cool physics-type puzzle game.

Gosh, I need to think about that. I’ve been DS-crazed for about a month now, so I’m a little out of touch with anything that’s hit the VC/WW world in the last month or so.

I’d highly recommend the Mega Man games (or at least Mega Man 9) if that’s your thing. WiiWare has a ton of great puzzle games, so if that’s your thing you can’t really go wrong.

If you’re a fan of Homestar, I hear that the Strong Bad downloads are a must-have.

I was actually vaguely underwhelmed by it. It feels a lot like Mario 64’s big brother, except set in a more disaffecting world.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s extremely fun and the gameplay and level design are practically flawless, but it just feels like one of the only Mario games that is more a collection of stages than it is a totally cohesive, awesome game. The weird Rosalina storyline maybe didn’t help.

The Wii has its share of good games such as Super Paper Mario, TLoZ: Twilight Princess, and Metroid Prime 3. Unfortunately, most of them are first party games, which are few and far between. Also, the bulk of the advertising and development is directed toward the casual crowd, which sucks for the hardcore gamers. However, there are still some intriguing games coming out in the coming year like MadWorld and Mario Tennis. Plus there are lots of cool WiiWare and Virtual Console games from which to choose. The DS library began in a similar way. Lots of gimmicky games with a gem here and there. Now there are a slew of good games that are just as fun as bigger console ones. Yeah, there’s still a lot of shovelware, but it’s easy enough to ignore those. Give Wii a chance and perhaps it’ll follow a path like that of the DS.

Meh

Twilight Princess is awesome, but I played it for the gamecube. Paper Mario was funny and original but there were too many slow points in the game. I couldn’t stand Metroid Prime 3. The sense of exploration was completely erased, IMO.

I sold my Wii and bought a PS3, and I haven’t looked back. I only have 3 games at this point but they’re all a blast, and I love the blu ray player (Band of Brothers, anyone?). To be honest, Wii Sports was my favorite Wii game. I don’t know why Nintendo didn’t go further with that.

I think that you’re confusing the system for the developers. The system is perfectly capable of hosting great games, and has a few (I know… that argument gets really dicy because what is a system without developers… but developers can catch up to a good system and not vice versa, and that’s an important distinction imo).

If you just don’t like the motion stuff, you’ll probably never like the Wii, and that’s okay. But you still might be missing out on a ton of great traditional gaming on the Wii by simply dismissing the system outright. The Virtual Console and the WiiWare titles are actually where most of the high quality development has found itself in the early life of the system. There are a ton of great classic games, and more and more really great original games coming out over WiiWare.

My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

Yeah,

but I don’t want to buy a brand new system just to play a bunch of old games that I could buy on ebay for like 20 bucks with the console. I really don’t like the motion stuff- it seems way too imprecise to me (though it’s possible I’m just not doing it right or something), I far prefer an analog stick that does exactly what I tell it to do.

What is wiiware? I’ve never heard of that one

WiiWare is essentially just a download service that works exactly like the Virtual Console, except that instead of getting old games, they sell brand new, completely original games, many of which come from smaller developers. World of Goo is one of those games. It was made by two guys with almost no help and is one of the coolest games I’ve played in a long time. Nintendo basically started the WiiWare service to support these smaller developers (in large part, no doubt, because the large developers were taking such a giant crap on the system, and the small ones would actually give a shit).

really?

I think MKW definitely rivals the original Mario Kart. I did not care for MK 64 at all, though.

The one thing that always bugs me about MKW is how the people in places 3 – 12 or whatever will always get the good items, basically eliminating the advantage of beating everyone for 3/4 of the race because you’ll get hit with a red or blue shell by someone. I curse that game every time it happens, and it always seems to happen around the last turn of the last lap. I feel like I should be rewarded for dominating for the majority of the race rather than get hit with a cheap shot and get knocked down to 5th.

MK64 is one of the great party games of all time. It was one of the first games I ever encountered where you could put together a completely random group of people and everybody would be down to play no matter how much of a gamer they were.

I still remember the day I spent playing Mario Kart 64 with my friend for seven hours. I felt terrible after.

Ah, those were good times, though. Mario Kart and Goldeneye for four players were a blast.

Mario Kart has always been designed with pretty brutal catchup logic, though. I think it’s just a staple of the series.

My problem with MK Wii

The tracks were some of the least imaginative and most dull, I thought.

To this day, I still haven’t gotten all the stars in Mario 64.

Really? It’s not that hard.

Also, Mario Kart Wii is a heck of a lot of fun. I can see calling it worse than MK64 or MKSNES or MKDS (the best in the series imo)… but being worse than absolutely fantastic games isn’t really much of a criticism. And to call it worse than Double Dash??? Come on!

Double Dash was my favorite! Oh well, I guess it’s a matter of taste.

I’m close in Mario 64, but there are a few stars that I can’t get in the giant clock level and the one where you ride that magic carpet on the rainbow track. Overall, it was way more challenging than the cake-walk that was Galaxy

Oh yeah, those levels are tough. Just keep at it, though. You’ll get them.

Mario Kart is my favorite game on the system thus far

The only non-Wiiware & non-WiiSports game I own is Mario Strikers, which is incredibly fun, and I’d recommend that to anyone. It’s fun to pick up and play, but each character has its own little trick moves that take a lot of time to master.

Thanks for all the input, everyone

I think I’ve unofficially set my mind on a PS3 for now, mostly because the price difference is pretty negligble when you factor in buying a wireless adapter and XBL, durability of the PS3, the potential of the Cell, and that the games seem to be improving. The Blu-ray is cool and puts it over the top, but it isn’t really a deal-breaker, although when I hopefully get my new plasma soon (/crosses fingers), I’ll probably appreciate that I have a Blu-Ray.

When The Show debuts and the system is mine, I will definitely be down for a McCoven league.

We'll have rival 2k vs the show leagues

have fun with it, and I do have to say that Blu ray is basically like sitting in a theater. It is really quite good.

My brother heard

that the sales of PS3’s have been so poor that they might discontinue the system altogether. Has anyone else heard this and/or know if there’s any truth to it?

But, he better sell the PS3 to me at a reduced price just to be safe.

$50 dollars sounds fair…

by xanthan on Jan 9, 2009 8:24 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

That won't happen

Sony has said that they want the system to have a 10 year lifespan. Plus, PS3 sales are way behind the Wii and 360, but they aren’t as awful as everyone seems to think

Not happening

No way a company like Sony would give up just like that. They’d lose face after all the promotion and hype they put into it.

Sarchasm?

“No sony would NEVER do something like that…” he said as he sat patiently waiting for GT4 Mobile to be released 4 years after its first release date.

I mean, I got my PSP in may of 2005 and went to Austrailia for a friend’s wedding. EVERY bus in Geelong had ads for the PSP using Gran Turismo. They even made a special PSP with the GT logo.

Stupid Sony.
