Henry Schulman and Buster Olney on Manny to the Giants
Henry Schulman carefully summarizes the Giants' interest in Manny Ramirez to kick off the day's Manny rumors.
1. The Giants and Scott Boras have talked, and it has not been a one-way conversation. In other words, the Giants have some interest in bringing Ramirez to San Francisco. This is not a case of Boras just trying to drum up another suitor to get the Dodgers re-engaged.
2. That said, the Giants......
Also Buster Olney: Rival executives have major doubts about whether San Francisco would ........

Well, from a monetary level, it may actually make sense
If the Giants got Manny, they’d probably be back to selling out every game.
The 2008-2009 offseason is driving me sane!

yeah, I’m not sure that the “rival GM’s” that Olney has talked to have any insight as to the Giants’ actual plans. The recession will hit the Giants’ harder if they have a shitty ballclub than it will if they go millions over their payroll limit.

Nicely stated
Mark, you make a very good point here. I have thus far been impressed with the Giants’ ability this off-season to improve their team without jeopardizing what I see as a potential fine future.

Great to see Henry stepping up his game with Baggs out of the country.

Apparently….
SF Giants = West Coast NY Yankees
except that we only spend money on players that probably dont deserve it like Zito/Rowand

yeah, like the Yankees never make a mistake in their FA contracts. The only difference is that they’ll just buy another one to make up for the mistake. If the Yankees had made the Zito mistake, they still would have offered Sabathia the same contract that they signed him to.

Actually sometimes it seems the past decade the Yankees always make mistakes when they sign FA contracts. Since neither they nor their fans count anything other than championships as successful, I pretty much think the only big FA contract that won them anything was Clemens (‘99, ’00, and I might not be remembering right). After the Giambi acquisition, and then acquiring A-Rod, it’s all been Snakes-strike-Fish-Sox-Other Sox-um somebody else-Sox again-Phuckers.
