For all of the woe – all of the soul-spindling, 72-straight-fastballs-to-Scott-Spiezio, why-couldn’t-McCovey-have-hit-it-two-feet-higher, why-does-Mother-Nature-favor-Dave-Stewart-making-two-starts, Richard-Nixon-at-the-opening-of-Candlestick woe – that Giants fans have suffered over the years, we’ve had a pretty sweet ride in a lot of respects. Barry Bonds was, how do you say, good, and he was fun to watch. The new ballpark is the most magnificent structure in the universe, no hyperbole. The organization lactates Hall-of-Famers ( 23 and counting), and it has a proud history. There are some perks to being a Giants fan. It isn’t all woe.

There’s the Giants’ announcing crew, for instance. It isn’t as if I listen to the radio and TV broadcasts of all 30 teams, so I can’t write with any certainty that they’re the best in baseball, but I can write this: I am absolutely certain that they’re the best announcing team in baseball. They were ranked #2 a few years back by USA Today behind Vin Scully, which I can understand. Jon Miller certainly wouldn’t argue. But it’s hard to argue that one broadcasting legend can make the entire team the best. Scully might be the only non-evil aspect of the Dodger organization, but he’s supported by Charley Steiner (meh) and Rick Monday (blargh). Some of the Dodger television broadcasts feature Steve "Psycho" Lyons (harfffffurrrreccch) as the color commentator. Yeah.

Miller is an obvious pro, but Duane Kuiper doesn’t get enough credit for his play-by-play. Other former players might have found success as color goofs, but I think of an ex-player in any sport who does play-by-play as well as Kuiper. It’s actually pretty demeaning to lump him in with the ex-player set, as he’s good enough to compare with anyone.

But do you realize how rare it is for people to enjoy listening to their broadcast team? And, as a corollary to that hypothetical question, do you realize how rare it is for the broadcast team to sound like they’re enjoying what they’re doing? The chemistry between Miller, Kuiper, Mike Krukow, and Dave Flemming is legendary – it’s the ’27 Yankees of broadcasting chemistry. They’re all interesting and talented, and they play off each other so danged well. The post-game wraps on KNBR are entertaining if the Giants win or lose.  Hell, everything they do is entertaining.

And Giants fans have been lucky for a while. Lon Simmons was a legend, and Hank Greenwald was also fantastic. Say, that gives me an excuse to post this:

Aww. Look at that little scamp. So young…so innocent…so blind. No, really, my 20/50,000 vision wasn’t corrected at the time of this photo, so I was probably really blind. That would explain the distant, confused gaze.

Open Effusive Praise for Our Beloved Broadcasters Thread. We’re lucky. Let’s brag about it.

I thought the jig was up when Greenwald retired – didn’t think anyone could come close to touching him, but Miller is even better.

I was skeptical of Flemming at first, but he’s really grown on me. I’d probably rank him second, ahead of Kuiper & Krukow among our broadcasters – and I likes the Kruk & Kuip.

IAWTC, I too was worried when Hank Greenwald left. Many of my Giants memories were tied to listening to him on the radio.

As I’ve stated before, Miller is one of the best on radio IMHO. Fleming has learned well from him. Giants fans are very lucky.

As for Kruk and Kuip, they are in their own class for TV guy’s. Just enough “homerism” to keep it listenable, lots of humor, and the baseball and personal stories make it fun.

Jon Miller was my idol when I was in high school and I had dreams of becoming a sports broadcaster. I still love him for his voice and storytelling.

Also Kuiper is very good. He has a natural voice for broadcasting and he speaks well on air.

Kruk

Deserves credit for his color commentary on pitch-sequence. You just don’t hear that with other broadcasters.

Also, does anyone ever feel like he tones it way down? Like, when I listen to him I feel like he really wants to let the expletives fly after a bad call but he holds it in.

Here's to the Dodgers and their bucket of suck.

Side discussion: Bad Giants broadcasters

I was lucky enough to miss McCarver’s brief stint as a part-time tv guy because I lived out of state and listened to Gameday Audio. But of course in recent years we’ve had to suffer through F.P. Santangelo, who has an obnoxious personality, and J.T. Snow, who has none at all.

Previously, Joe Angel was pretty worthless. He usually did the radio broadcasts with Jon Miler, and there were times when Miller’s annoyance with Angel’s lameitude seemed barely restrained – although Miller was, of course, always a professional.

Before him, there was Ted Robinson, who wasn’t a bad broadcaster at times, but his voice grated on me sometimes.

I liked him during spring training last year because he was working with the players they were talking about. He could give a little extra info for the newbie at bat. I don’t mind it at all when he comes in for a few inning here and there during the season either. As long as those innings are few and far between.

This is how I knew that my love for our broadcasters wasn’t simply me being a homer. I hated some of them. Angel and Pappa, mostly. I kind of liked Ted Robinson (not as much as the four main guys now, though).

Also, does anyone remember the guy that was almost an intern in the late nineties or earlies 2000’s? I can’t remember his name. I just remember they sent him to the building across the street from Minute Maid (Enron at the time) Field during one game. Yeah. That guy wasn’t very good.

Didn’t Jon bring Joe over from their days together in Baltimore? And Joe only reinforces how spoiled we are in SF as he’s the everyday announcer in Baltimore again.

I really like Ted Robinson, I thought he called a great game. He’ll do well calling the Niners. He’s another example of the Giants cast-offs going elsewhere as he took the reigns for the Mets broadcasts after leaving.

Mr. Merope and I hated Joe Angel. Around here he was infamous for blowing games for the Giants.
“Well the Giants have a 3 run lead and only a Jones grandslam would beat them now, and Jones hasn’t hit a grandslam in 84 years, and Schmidt hasn’t given up a grandslam in 72 years.” Next pitch? Grand slam.

“Aurilia hasn’t made an error now in 5,786 innings, well look at that he dropped the ball!”

It was uncanny how often stuff like that would happen. Now, whenever a sports broadcaster says something with potential jinx value one of us is sure to shout out “Shut up Joe Angel!” Drew Remenda gets yelled at like that a lot.

I’d managed to push the second one out of my mind. Thanks a lot for bringing it back.

Gary Park did only TV games. He had the most amazing tan you’ve ever seen; I imagine he’s dead of melanoma by now.

Greenwald owns both the radio calls that I can remember word for word. One is my tagline. The other came in a game in ‘93 against the Marlins, when Beck was trying to close it out in the bottom of the ninth but had loaded the bases. Orestes Destrada came up, Beck threw him a fastball, and Greenwald’s call went, “Destrada swings and there’s a LONG DRIVE! IT IS HIGH! IT IS DEEP! IT IS FOUL!” None of that if it’s fair it’s gone cliche, and he did it in perfect rhythm, without a hesitation or missed beat.

The current crew is great, too.

I like Robinson. Anyone remember him on Warriors games after Bill King retired? I thought he was pretty darned good.

For me, Starkey was… just OK. He was always honest and found a good balance between being pro-Niners and not being a shameless, huckstering homer. He had great camaraderie with Gary Plummer, and I really liked his personality. He reminded me of the older next-door neighbor who offers you a beer whenever you drop by, and gladly loans you his power tools, even pitching in and helping when he can with whatever you’re doing. My main beef with Starkey was the difficulty he frequently seemed to have of keeping up with, and accurately describing what was taking place on the field. I also didn’t much care for, “OHHH, WHAT A BONANZA!!”. But, I know, I know…that’s just me.

Lindsay Nelson...

For the love of Pete, he was awful. A legend back east, he was all wrong for SF. Grating voice, past his prime and not able to keep up with the action on the field, completely lacking in sophistication or humor, and just knowing he was sitting in the booth wearing a jacket that could rival waterboarding as a form of torture (visual torture, anyway), made my head hurt. Thankfully, he lasted quick.

Other unpopulars have been Art Eckman, David Glass and Phil Stone. I didn’t mind the first two and I don’t remember Stone.

Kuiper

His home run calls are absolutely priceless.
I think Jon Miller is quite possibly better than Vin Scully. Say what you want, but that is just my opinion.
I love how Kruk is a homer without being obnoxious but sometimes he kills me when he makes opposing pitchers out to be the second coming of Cy Young.
Fleming is just solid. He seems to be really coming into his own and has really earned the respect of Miller.
I would rank them as follows:
1.Miller
2.Kuip
3.Kruk and Flem (tie)

Flem

Okay, I’m biased. I’d marry David B. Flemming tomorrow if he wasn’t already married, I wasn’t getting married this year and either of us were gay. But I seriously think he might be underappreciated, even in this town, because of how great and legendary his broadcasting partners are. He does a great job at calling a game, interspersing baseball info and anecdotes, interacting with Jon (I love when Jon gives him a hard time about Stanford or emphasizes any Cal grads in the game), and playing the straight man in the postgame wrap.

Nothing was as fun to listen to as Flem’s rookie broadcast season, when the other guys would ride him mercilessly in the wrap and he’d sit there and take it good-naturedly. You can tell he’s earned the respect of Miller, Kruk and Kuip, and that they like working with him. Bonus points to him for doing well on the TV side; for handling the lost audio call of Bonds 714 (715?) maturely; and for openly discussing his large reading list on the air.

Lastly, I’d rather hear him fill in for most KNBR hosts than listen to the KNBR host he’s filling in for. I’ll stop gushing now.

My Dave Flemming story

My wife and I did a NY/Philly trip in late May/early June of 2007 to see the G’s for the last time (for us) in Shea Stadium where I misspent much of my youth. After narrowly missing the Benitez balkfest (we
were landing while it was happening), we saw the G’s and Mets split a pair of games (one, a brilliant performance by Zito), and then jumped a train to Philly for a Friday evening game (which the G’s won
13-0).

Saturday we went to one of Philly’s fanciest French restaurants Le Bec Fin for lunch before returning to New York where we had plans for the evening. We picked this placed because they had a good rep, good wine list, were open for lunch, and had an air conditioner (it was blistering).

We’re seated just after they open and have the place to ourselves. Shortly afterwards two other parties are seated, one of which had three people, and was just a small table away from us. The group appeared to be a couple a bit older than us, and a young man in a white cotton tee shirt. Upon closer inspection, the young man was none other than David B. Flemming, presumably dinning with his parents (who I believe live in the DC area).

I get up to use the rest room, and when I return, I say to him, “Excuse me for interrupting, I bet you get this all the time, but you look just like Dave Flemming.” And sit down back at my table nearby. He has know idea how to respond to my greeting. He’s stuttering “Well that’s because I… wait, how did you…” I introduce myself and my wife and tell him we’re Giants fans visiting for some east coast games and that we admire his work, blahx3.

We chatted a bit about the G’s series in NY and the blowout in Philly. He and his parents were really nice.

Krukow Story

In 2006 Mrs. NVSFG and I were down to see a game in July. So..we are outside waiting for the players to come out, and out walks Kruk. They guy had just had surgery on his foot (or knee) and you could tell he was in pain. He’s got crutches and slip on tennis shoes along with his tie and sport coat.

Now having grown up in the Bay Area, Krup and Kuip are Mrs. nvsfg’s absolute favorite guys. So she calls out to Kruk to say thanks for calling the games and making them fun to listen to ,even when they lose, and he walks (hobbles) on over to say you’re welcome and asks if she would like a autograph ? Out of the freakin’ blue. Then she asks him if he take a picture with her. His answer ? “You Bet I Would” .

Class Act and truly nice guy. I appreciate it when athletes (and former athletes) take the time to thank you for watching them do their job.

but Flem still drives me nuts sometimes. I can’t stand it when he lets his frustration with the Giants’ play affect the tone of his voice, to the point where he just sounds completely exasperated. I mean, Miller does this to some extent too, but at least he’s sorta funny about it. Flem just ends up belaboring the same point over and over, as though we didn’t already know that Giants pitchers give up too many walks!

I really enjoyed Hank Greenwald, I was very disappointed when he left and stopped listening to games on the radio for awhile.

I must disagree about Flem. Being the new guy, he had to take the flack and he was deferential to his fellow broadcasters. Over time, he’s more secure in his role and doesn’t bend as easily. Good for him. I do like his dry wit, it’s not overt but there is for the taking.

I’ll occasionally catch a Nationals game on TV (I live in DC), and it reminds me how awesome the Giants’ announcers are. Even if it’s a Giants/Nationals game, it’s just not as fun to watch without Kruk/Kuip/Flem/Miller. And I agree with the Kuip-lovin’. At first Kruk always stood out when listening to Kruk & Kuip, but now sometimes he gets to be a bit much. Honestly, if it weren’t for Miller, Kuip just might be the best announcer in baseball… I think Vin Scully isn’t as good as he used to be (and of course the Dodgers are evil).

Lon Simmons

I barely missed Russ Hodges, but fell immediately in love with Lon Simmons and Bill Thompson. Later on, Thompson left and let some whippersnapper named Al Michaels get a shot at the big time. But to me, Lon is the all-time voice of the Giants, although I will admit that Hank and Jon are funnier, and Kruk tells us more about the game.

Dodger fans get all in a hissy fit about objectivity, like it freakin’ matters. I want my broadcasters to tell me something I don’t already know, otherwise I’d just as soon turn ’em off and listen to music with the game. In that regard, Kruk and Kuip have it all over Vin Scully and the rest of the pack.

Lon is King (and so is Bill)

I grew up in the early 60’s with Russ and Lon. As much as I <3 Jon, Hank, et al, for me, it’ll always be about Russ and Lon. Lon, probably more so, since Lon stayed on with the Giants long enough for me to actually begin to appreciate him. Plus, he also did Niners’ games for many years (his call of the Steve Young run vs. Minnesota ftw!!). For me, I think Lon Simmons will always be the definitive Giants and Niners PBP guy, and of course, Bill King will always be the definitive Warriors PBP man. That one’s not even close.

I remember the Al Michaels years (1974-76). He had come over to SF from Cincinnati. 1976 was the best year, when Lon came back from exile to join Michaels, replacing both Art Eckman and Bill Thompson in the process. I liked Thompson too, although I don’t think he was ever that well-regarded. But I remember Al and Lon having a real nice camaraderie together. What a dream pairing.

I also remember watching games on MLB.tv and hating the other broadcasters. Kruk and Kuip always talk about the game, strategy, pitching sequence, etc – that many broadcasters never mention. And I love Miller and Flem, they are fantastic.

Between this thread and the news about Will, I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to spring training.

Also, I really liked Ted Robinson, and I’m glad he’s back in the bay. My family happens to watch a lot of tennis, and I always enjoyed knowing that he was “our guy” while he’d be calling a match.

Other former players might have found success as color goofs, but I think of an ex-player in any sport who does play-by-play as well as Kuiper.

I think there’s a missing “can’t” in there, but the point is well taken. The only former athlete I can think of who made it big as a play-by-play guy was Pat Summeral.

Play-by-play is really hard, especially by yourself. Try turning the sound down and doing it. I’ve always been one with the gift of gab, but trying to accurately describe everything you see while remembering players’ names from both teams is much much harder than it looks.

The fact that Kuip, Miller and Flem all do it so effortlessly is really cool.

Miller and his radio partners

Miller can do it all on the radio—play-by-play and analysis and MLB updates—and he doesn’t like to share. Poor Ted Robinson had to shut up for 6 innings a game because Miller would shut down Ted’s lame attempts at insights or conversation. Miller also acted kind of annoyed with Joe Angel. With Flemming, though, Miller sees a bright guy who can play the straight man and set up hilarious deadpan interludes.

My favorite radio combo hardly ever happens anymore, but when Miller and Kuiper used to do a game, wow—Kuip, as the #2, would zing one-liners all game long.

by ho-hum baby on Jan 29, 2009 5:07 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

One other Miller-Flem thing...

Flemming’s gotten pretty good at play-by-play, but sometimes there will be a complex play that is too much for him to describe in full—say, a bloop that falls in down the RF line, with a couple guys rounding the bases and a couple relay throws. When something like this happens, Miller will step in when the play is done and tell us what really happened—like, the RF was shading the wrong way or got a poor jump or lobbed his throw to the cutoff man, or the baserunner ran through a stop sign, or the pitch missed its location. It’s awesome to be reminded of how much Miller sees.

Ted Robinson is underrated

Yes, the voice can get a little bit chirpy, but he is a total pro as a broadcaster. He’s knowledgeable about the game and rules and history and currents and techniques. He has no shtick or silliness or anything that calls attention to himself. Again, except for moments when the voice goes chirpy. I respect Ted a lot.

The Krukow Kru

I miss the bleachers they put in the ‘Stick in ’93. I loved how you could roll up a couple hours before a game and pay $5 for a seat. If you were there early enough, you could get seats in the front row. In ’95, my friend and I started bringing signs dedicated to Mike Krukow with us in the bleachers. What better way to get on TV than bring a sign for the color guy? We’d sit in the front row in the “Bonds Squad” area, holding the signs in front of us so we wouldn’t block the fans behind us. Barry seemed to always give us a look like, “why you stupid fxcks holdin up signs for some dumb announcer?”

The first one we got on tv said, “Bring back Krukow!” (our pitching was hooooorrible that year.) Other signs said “Krukow is God”(Kuip busted Mike’s balls on air for that one), Krukow 3:16, Kruk and Kuip: The Real Dream Team, Super Krukow (Superman logo with ‘K’ instead of ’S’), Krukow for President, and Retire #39. After the games, we’d wait in the parking lot where the players left the stadium. Kruk would always stop and chat with us.

One of our buddies was in the army, so we asked Mike to autograph one of the signs so we could send it to him in Korea. He signed it, “Hey Rob, come back it one piece. -Mike Krukow.” F’n classic.

Mike gave us his e-mail and would send us random banter back and forth. He even called my friend Greg to wish him a Happy Birthday. What a nice guy.

Anyways, we retired The Krukow Kru when Mays Field opened in 2000 due to the new bleacher set up. We saw a “Krukow Krew” a few times on tv; a couple guys with orange jackets they had made. We knew that they were just imitators; we were the originators.

senile or blind or both. I watch them for a lack of not being able to pony up money for the sports package. But the announce here (name unknown) is old for every fly ball, even to shallow center he says

“this one is hit well it has a chance AND its…caught”.

I became spoiled in SF with that team. Even the Red Sox’s suck, bland mono tone self righteous crap, the only time I listen to ball games is when I am home visiting family otherwise I watch them on mute. It really sucks going elsewhere after experiencing the best. I really like the honest from Kuip and Kruk

I think one of my favorite memories of listening to Giants baseball was the game May 29th 2001. Mr. Merope and I had fallen asleep listening to the game on the radio. When I woke up it was well after midnight, and I just assumed I was now listening to the midnight replay. Little did I know that Mr. Merope was also awake, until one of the broadcasters informed us “…onto the 16th inning.”

At which point I heard from the other side of the bed “Did he just say 16th inning?”
Unfortunately we managed to stay up for the end of that game.
And imagine, they lose 1-0 in 18 innings … and Matt Cain wasn’t pitching!

Croix de McCovey Cove.

I was at the ridiculous 12-inning loss the day before, and although that was a day game and only 12-innings, it did feature Dunston leading off and playing centerfield, so it was pretty much an unbearable trial in its own right.

I was pondering if this was the extra inning 2 day doubleheader marathon.

They were against the D-Snakes right? That was quite a series. I do remember
something great that came out of it…in the 16 inning game, in about the 13th or
so, I needed to stretch my legs, walked into the Field Club and discovered Bobby
was still manning the bar. It was—and continues to be—a beautiful thing.

After the place empties out, you can hear the ball hit the gloves of the fielders, hear the players talking during the plays (couldn’t make out quite what they were saying, but could hear them talking), and all the little details that you don’t think about. Unbelievably interesting.

I totally remember listening to that game

Jon Miller was doing the game with Lon Simmons on the radio. They were alternating extra innings all night long. I was so impressed with how well Lon held it together—he wasn’t just good for an old man, he was as good as I ever heard him in those Lon part-time years. He and Miller just sounded so pleased and amused to be at the park to announce a 0-0 classic.

Announcer memorabilia

Three things in my collection:

  • Kruk and Kuip bobblehead—A gift from my Candlestick seat neighbor. How did
I not score one of these when they were released?!
  • Ball autographed by Kruk, Kuip, and Ted Robinson—Won in a random giveaway
at the Stick (circa whenever Ted was an announcer 98ish?). What’s weird was
they announced the winner at the game and it was one of the few games we
didnt attend. I saw a friend later that night and he congratulated me on winning
the ball. He was there, and heard our names announced, but I had no idea what
he was talking about. It came in the mail a week later.
  • A micro cassette from the strike-shortened ’94 season. I forget when they did this,
(probably right before they sent out invoices for next season) but Kruk, Kuip, and
Ted (maybe others in the org?) phoned season ticket holders and appologized
for the interrupted season, and told us how important we are, blahx3.

The worst of all time had to be Gary Park...

He spent so much time talking about his favorite restaurants in other cities that you know he wasn’t paying attention to what was going on in the field. I used to keep track of the number of mistakes he made during each broadcast… stupid things like calling players by the wrong name, losing track of the count, even getting the opposing team wrong. Even though I was in elementary school, even I knew when he had flubbed it. Pathetic.

Totally true...

I could listen to Jon Miller describe a grove of apricot trees and I wouldn’t be able to stop listening. He is truly a master.

Flem is also quite amazing in his own right. Extremely knowledgeable and easy to listen to.

Kuiper is a great play by play guy on TV or Radio, and Kruk is a homer, a ham, and a true former player. If only these broadcasts could be on Sirius-XM Howard Stern style so he could tell dirty stories from road trips back in the ’70s.

I love these guys.

My favorite is still Hank Greenwald who could turn a 15-2 blowout rain-delay into a wry soliloquy worth weathering. Whew. I’m not as nuts about Jon Miller (he’s okay), and unless Kruk is really talkin’ baseball he’s too yuk-yuk for me, but Flem is only going to get better and Kuip is sooo easy to listen to. Liked Ted Robinson, too. All-in-all we are doing way better than most other teams.
