i like me some lincecum, unit, cain, sanchez/sheets/zito better….

timmy and cain get 34 starts, unit, sanchez and sheets get 25 to preserve them, and zito get sloppy 6ths

putting anymore cash into starting pitching for our ‘09 roster would be a waste, especially when we constantly don’t have the offense to win for Matt Cain’s pitching

Noah Lowry’s recovering/recovered and that makes 6 starters – Remember when Lowry went 14-8, with 3.92 ERA? That was 2007.

“Noah Lowry’s recovering/recovered” – I guess that’s why Sabean was just recently saying that they don’t expect anything out of him and will consider any innings they get from him this year as a bonus?

I think you’ll find your “recently” as in “August 27th”

More recently however, we get this -

“During the Dec. 27 conference call to announce the signing of Randy Johnson, Giants general manager Brian Sabean indicated that if both left-handers remained with the club through Spring Training, Lowry likely would claim the fifth starting job over Sanchez due to his seniority. Lowry has nearly four full years of Major League service time, excluding last season, compared with slightly more than two for Sanchez.”

It’s comforting to see that even in a good offseason the front office is still pushing stupid. I’ll never understand how tenure became a proxy for talent.

Sabean Is Selling Here

It is Lowry not Sancehz that Brian wants to trade. It is therefore Lowry’s value (not Sanchez’s) that Sabean is trying to build up. This is exactly the way Sabean should be talking. He is selling that Lowry is “as talented as Sanchez” and therefore his seniority will be the deciding factor. If they both remain Giants and both are healthy when the season starts you can take it to the bank that the Giants will start then one they believe is most likely to perform the best. Senority will having nothing to do with the actual decision when the actual decision is made.

Yeah, but I doubt any GMs are listening to a single thing Sabean says in regards to Lowry.

sabean doesn’t try to build player’s value. he waits until they’ve lost all value, then throws them to the curb. or keeps them around until they have to be taken into the backyard and shot in the back of the head.

like when hennessey had half a season as a decent closer, and they start talking about him in terms of “doesn’t have closer stuff” and such.

sabean isn’t bluffing to take some other gm for a fool. he could have had lastings milledge after lowry posted an even k/bb rate. take you’re koolaid somewhere else.

Brian Sabean figures that if he buys enough bottles, one of them is bound to have lightning in it.

I was hoping he meant Lowry could get the spot if we get a great trade offer for sanchez and he leaves, but that’s probably wishful thinking. But if he stays on the team, I will be very angry if sanchez doesn’t start.

If In Spring training A Healthy Lowry Looks Like The 2004/5 Lowry Instead Of the 2006/7 Lowry

I would have zero problem with the Giants choosing Lowry over Sanchez for the 5th a last rotation slot. How they actually perform (not some judgment on potential) should be the deciding factor.

by giantsrainman on Jan 25, 2009 4:02 PM PST up reply actions

That’s possible, but I think it will be hard to tell just from spring training how far lowry has really come back. I just think after what Sanchez showed last season, he should be in a major league starting rotation. It doesn’t seem like a good idea to keep moving him back and forth between the pen and the rotation.

This Is True From A Sanchez Only Point Of View

But the Giants have to look at the the bigger piture of what is in the best interests of the team as a whole. Another way to look at this is If Lowry pitches well enough to win the 5th starter role and continues to do so in the regualr season to keep the 5th starter role his is increasing greatly his trade value at the trade deadline. What is not to like about that?

by giantsrainman on Jan 25, 2009 6:24 PM PST up reply actions

Noah Lowry at best is a bottom of the rotation starter. His upside isn’t within a mile of Jonathan Sanchez’ upside. If you’re going into the 2009 season worrying about player’s trade values at the deadline, then don’t even bother playing the season, because it’s not about winning. Sanchez has had too many stops and starts in his career already, due to minor injuries and their jacking him around between the rotation, bullpen and Fresno. Why would you jack him around again the first half of the 2009 season, when he clearly has one of the best arms on your team?? Cut the crap, Sabean. If you want to be cute and make proclamations to try and fool other GM’s that’s one thing, but if you really believe what you’re saying then do the team a favor and resign now.

If Lowry comes into spring training and shows he is close to the 2005 form Sanchez still should hold a starters spot unless Sanchez has Ankiel Strikes Syndrome ( or A.S.S. for short ). Zito is the logical guy to become long relief / swing man.

• Zito is not going any were soon. It would take more than a good first half of a season to make him interesting to another GM. However a good first half would do wonders to either Sanchez’s or Lowry’s market interest.
• Name the last time Zito had a good April and May in the same season. Then name the how often that has happened.
• Zito and Lowry are the only two soft tossers in this group of 6. This should give them an edge in relief appearances following Cain, Tim, Sanchez and Johnson.
• Being a Savvy Veteran® Zito already knows what he needs to do to make it through a full season. Given Sanchez a role letting him stay in it give Sanchez the chance to develop the between games routine he needs to have a hope at being starter.

Of course we are talking about pitchers here so what are the odds all 6 break camp healthy ready to go 5+ innings? This is probably much ado about nothing.

by daveinexile on Jan 26, 2009 7:04 AM PST up reply actions

Hampton, Nagel, Schmidt. There are other pitchers the sign big money contracts and end up out the rotation a couple years into the commitment. This move does have president across baseball as a whole. If you want to argue there is not precedent on the Sabean Giants I ask you to name the precedent under Sabean’s reign when a starting pitcher was allowed to continuously stink up the joint when there were other viable options.

Here comes Captain Obvious wearing his Atomic Wedgie!

by daveinexile on Jan 26, 2009 1:02 PM PST up reply actions

Schmidt not being in the Dodgers rotation has more to do with his health than him just sucking.

by Lars The Wanderer on Jan 26, 2009 1:10 PM PST up reply actions

And you are going to contend Zito is healthy in the head right now?

No one says the move would be permanent. In fact the move was done last year for a small bit of time so there is precedent on my side of the debate.

And I think the chances of all 6 being healthy and good to go when they break camp are mighty small. Small enough that we are probably talking about what kind of chickens will be hatched before the eggs are even laid.

I'm sorry

paying a guy 900k and having him produce like a guy who makes 8 mil is “overrated”? What? His fielding is fairly terrible, but seeing as how the guy used to be a pitcher, I’d say he’s quite valuable at his current production. Sure, the media BS is a bit much (news flash), but when you’re expecting nothing from a guy and get a nice power threat instead, then I think you should be happy.

by bondslegend on Jan 25, 2009 8:49 PM PST up reply actions

No one brought up money and I wasn’t talking about his production vs. cost, which is admittedly great. He’s overrated because he hit a bunch of HR’s and used to be the top pitching prospect in baseball. He’s an ok player, but he’s not better than any of the starting outfielders we have.

Whatever expectations you may have had for him has zero effect on his actual value.

Hmm

I’d take Ankiel over Rowand. And his contract, too.

I think if you’re expecting zero from someone and they turn out to be pretty good, then that’s quite valuable, actually.

by bondslegend on Jan 25, 2009 11:16 PM PST up reply actions

No, it's not

Your expectations have ZERO effect on actual value.

Anyways, we aren’t talking about contracts. Just their value to a team, in which case I’d take Rowand. 4 out of the last 5 years he’s been worth at least 1.5 wins (and 3 of those years he was worth 3.5, 4.5, and 4.9). It was one bad year.

by marcello on Jan 26, 2009 10:01 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah

it was one bad year from a guy who’s 32. Forgive me for not thinking that that’s a fluke.

And part of a guy’s value to his team is their contract. How can you just throw that out the door? Rowand is making like 12 mil a year, Ankiel gets 900k. Are you telling me that if you had the choice between Ankiel at 900k and Rowand at 12 mil you’d still take Rowand? If so, then I respectfully disagree.

For example- part of Zito’s harm to the Giants is that he sucks, the other part is that his contract is so awful, that it will keep them from being able to do certain things for the next 5 years. Contracts are a pretty integral part of a guy’s value.

by bondslegend on Jan 26, 2009 10:43 AM PST up reply actions

Dude, I know

Look at where this conversation started. I just said he’s overrated. His contract has nothing to do with that. I was just talking about common perception. I wasn’t talking about it from a team building perspective. Stop implying that I’m saying something I’m not.

Anyways, this is his last year of arbitration (and he’s going to get around 2.5 million), I believe, and he will be getting expensive.

Well,

you said “cool story, but that’s about it”. I actually think it’s a lot more than a “cool story”. The guy is a pretty productive and (for the moment anyways) very cheap OF. That’s exactly what every team wants- a guy who performs way better than you have to pay him for. Sabean takes the opposite approach and pays a bunch to guys whose performances could be had for a lot less money. That’s what it’s all about.

I agree that the media has made too big a deal out of the guy, but who gives a fluck what they say anyways?

by bondslegend on Jan 26, 2009 1:40 PM PST up reply actions

being overrated is overrated.

He’s good, not great, but he has a good story. What’s to complain about?

Uhhh

The trade candidate shouldn’t be Lowry or Sanchez; rather, it should be the eternal third-starter Matt Cain for whom Sabean should endeavor to reap the most plentiful bounty.

Obviously.

We're debating what to do when there are too many quality starters

If we end up having this problem after ST, I’ll gladly accept the ZOMG start Lowry or ZOMG start Sanchez debate.

Noah Lowry probably isn’t a quality starter these days.

I think Lowry and Sanchez should be co-starters.

Start Sanchez, run him through the lineup twice, then put Lowry in for the next two… since pitchers perform best their first couple times through the lineup and such… and then you can use them in relief on one of their bullpen-throwing days. Yes, it’s genius, and no one has ever thought of anything like this, I know.

I am not so sure.

Zito was publicly sent to the ‘Pen last season. Granted Zito was doing so badly even the EPA Super Fund list denied him membership because he was so huge of a project. Also granted he was not there long enough to even begin building his own pile of empty sunflower seed husks. But it was done and both him and the fan base has been prepared by the doing of it.

Plus Sabean has not been one to allow a starter he deems questionable to stay any longer the necessary if another viable option is available. I might quibble with what he considers the threshold to become questionable but he does turn over the pitching. Now if he would have been a bit more like that with the veteran position players. But that’s another topic.

Help me out here

First off, I read these threads daily and admire you folks in here. For the passion, the knowledge, the boner jokes, etc. Thanks for making me laugh and learn at the same time. I rarely post but am an avid McC fan.

I’m just wondering about Lowry. Yes, freaky injury. Yes, one of the worst spring training box scores for a pitcher we’ve ever seen as he melted down in historic fashion. But it seems like even a healthy Lowry gets kinda the “meh” treatment from lotsa folks in here. I’ve always loved the dude. What team in baseball wouldn’t take an ‘07 Lowry for their 5th starter?? Yes, I know it’s a longshot that he ever gets back to that. But he’s been an effective starter, and at times was the most consistent starter on the staff. I’m a casual fan. I don’t dive into Baseball Reference, etc. like many folks in here. I know that he’s always had some control issues even prior to the injury and for a period of time was tipping his changeup. But he’s been a helluva decent big league pitcher from my perspective and a great example of someone who doesn’t throw hard but can get ML hitters out while frustrating the hell out of them. Somebody enlighten me! Noah Lowry, if loving you is wrong….

(also, I like how earlier in this thread someone finally called out Cain a bit. His velocity was off in ‘08 and I’d say that if he can’t win as a #3 in ‘09 the Giants will be kicking themselves for not getting some value for this guy when they had a chance. I also hope I’m really really wrong…)

I think that was the injury that was responsible for the wildness, though.

He was like a handsome version of Doug Davis before he got hurt.

/pours one out for Noah

I'm spent, just can't rosterbate anymore.

by oldjacket on Jan 27, 2009 9:50 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah, the wildness was probably nerve related but what’s equally concerning is that he’s losing the ability to strike out hitters.

Lowry K/9

2005 – 7.56
2006 – 4.74
2007 – 5.02

He’s lost nearly 2 K’s per 9 innings. I think part of it is that he’s moving away from throwing his changeup as much as he once did.

Changeup Usage

2005 – 26.8%
2006 – 22.7%
2007 – 18.7%

I’m sure the league has adjusted to it some, but I wonder if he’s lost the feel for the pitch because of his injuries?

I think it’s very possible that he adjusted his mechanics from the oblique injury, leading to the forearm injury and loss of control.

What came first the chicken or the egg?

by wilriv21 on Jan 27, 2009 1:18 PM PST up reply actions

On Lowry I think it’s more a realization first oblique injury then the fore arm that he just might be finished. I think he is well liked around here just we are guarded about his chances.

On the " calling out Cain" that floats around some corners of the Giant Horde ( usually off this site). Context, Context, Context. Most pitchers are barely getting a cup of coffee in The Show at his age. He has 3 full campaigns. Can he get better? Hell yes. It has been 4 decades since we had 2 really good pitchers to head a rotation (Not just 2 pitchers having career years at the same time) and frankly some fans have forgotten ( or never learned) this is not fantasy baseball and in the real game great pitching is as important as great line play in football. Dingers and long passes are Sexy but if you want a chance to win it all you have to have great line play and great pitching. The last two are not so sexy just essential if you want to be more than an afterthought.

Lastly, most importantly, welcome to a new voice.

Tks to all for the input! Tks xanthan for the bb and k percentages vs. league average. That diminished ability for the strikeout is scary. I do hope the guy bounces back. I’ve just always been a Lowry guy and would love to see him regain form. He and Zito back to back in a rotation would be a bit odd though.

I also just want to state that despite my concern I’m a big Cain fan. I live in NE and went down to KC to see Giants play Royals a couple games last year. Cain dominated them for 8 innings in his start. It was great. I do believe that having him in the third spot in the rotation is gonna work out very well. I still wonder about his velocity, and again I hope that my fears are unfounded. I definitely understand that he’s still a baby. Believe me, I would love he and Lincecum to anchor this staff for the next decade.

Thanks for the advice Goofus. I’ll keep an eye out for the idiot fringe that taints this forum. I do, however, enjoy watching looped video of people with vast baseball knowledge dancing in the crowd @ AT&T….
