Around SBN: Yankees Deny Rumors That Team Is For Sale

ESPN ensures nobody will ever watch Sunday Night Baseball again

http://awfulannouncing.blogspot.com/2009/01/breaking-miller-and-morgan-not.html

So once we rejoiced when we heard that Joe Morgan was leaving the Sunday Night Baseball announcing team on ESPN. Not only is good old Joe staying, but ESPN added insult to...uh...bad announcing.

They hired Steve Phillips as a third voice for the broadcasts.

Guys I can't even do this anymore. I love Jon. But the combined power of suck of Morgan and Phillips is just too much. We have Jon five days a week with a great broadcasting team, and that's good enough for me.

Fuck the heck?

What the hell, ESPN? Are you fucking retarded? When are they going to learn that trowing a third announcer at something is always always always idiotic?

I swear, I think they want the ratings to tank. The sad thing is, plenty of people still watch and think those dickheads know what they’re talking about. The amount of non analysis will be staggering. “So guys, why do you think this guy’s been struggling?”

JM: “Consistency!!”

Well , we can always drop by McC for all that analysis we missed while we were watching the game.

Admittedly , I don’t technically know jack shit about baseball…and though I occasionally try to make sense out of your statistical jabberings I have to admit I don’t pay that much attention to them. Does my ignorance lessen my enjoyment of the game? Not that I notice.

I’ve read a lot of disdain for a lot of broadcasters here , particularily McCarver , Morgan and Buck…and now Phillips. It’s funny , though , I never notice how terrible they are.

I guess I’m just too busy watching to be listening.

With the exception of Buck and McCarver, I completely agree. I think people get way too caught up by announcers. It’s baseball for crying out loud. Enjoy the game.

exactly. If I want to watch the game I don’t care who the announcers are, I’m going to watch it. And if it’s a game I have no interest in, I won’t. The announcers may affect how much you enjoy the game, but they’re not difference makers in whether you watch or not.

no way!

Actually, who knows. I could be convinced.

To me, Miller has a perfect self-confidence: knowledgeable enough to help us picture the situation when he’s solo or operating without an analyst; knowledgeable enough to know how to draw expertise out of analysts when he’s paired with one (either Kruk or Joe Morgan); and secure enough in his own knowledge of the game to let the analyst explain the strategy of a game situation instead of worrying about proving to his audience that he himself knows as much as the analyst.

by oldjacket on Jan 22, 2009 7:53 AM PST up reply actions

Scully is a gem

A guilty pleasure, being a Dodger guy, but a gem nonetheless. I hear him a lot because living in SoCal I tune in when the Giants are in town. He totally gets the Giants-Dodger rivalry, and, since he’s personally witnessed more than half of it during his career (let that sink in a minute), Vin always has new nuggets. Just beautiful.

When I was a kid I had the privelege of listening to Scully, Simmons, Hodges, Caray, and Gowdy. True greats. Vin is the last man standing.

I do like John Miller a lot, and I guess I’m in the minority, but I don’t mind Morgan when they’re together. Kruk and Kuip are a blast.

Al Leiter is a guy I really like. I’ve learned more about pitching when he’s been in the booth than from all other announcers combined. Seaver is good, too.

The worst: Ted Lightner, the Padres announcer. Fran Healy is also really godawful. So was Steve Lyons. Buck and McCarver of course.

I’ll always go all in with the declaration that Ted Leitner is the worst play-by-play announcer in baseball. His infamous, “I’ll take the Padres clubhouse over the Mets talent…anyday!” early last season was the coffin into the inferno for me.

Plus the Padres radio commentary is literally Tuesdays with Morrie come to life with Leitner and Jerry Coleman. It can be funny in a sadistic, chuckle to yourself way.

I like Coleman

Because he played, and he played on five consecutive World Series champions, with the likes of Dimaggio and Mantle and Berra and Raschi and Lopat and Reynolds against the Whiz Kids and the Coogan’s Bluff Miracle guys and da bums, so he’s got some stories to tell, and every so often when the Giants are in SD I can pull in AM 610 and listen to some stories, and I like to listen to stories when I’m taking in a game. It’s ok if I’ve heard them before.

But Lightner gives me nothing. I lived in SD in the early 80s, when Lightner was just a local TV sports anchor, and he was really kind of a cutting asshole. That made him actually interesting. Now it’s like he’s overcorrected. He’s just swill.

My favorite was an “All Bonds, All the Time” couple of innings he did a few years ago when he and Flem were both on the TV side for some reason. This was of course poking fun at the media’s obsession with Bonds which was at a particular frenzy then. So when Bonds went into left field to play defense, they insisted on shots of him standing out there doing nothing, with them commenting on it.

At one point the pitcher failed to get a close call. A few seconds later Bonds folded his arms, probably for no particular reason. But Miller scrutinized the arm-folding at length, something like: “Now, we don’t know if Bonds is just resting, or whether he is expressing displeasure with the call.”

by non sequitur on Jan 22, 2009 5:55 PM PST up reply actions

Miller is great

but when he does Sunday Night Baseball with Joe Morgan, he seems to be holding back a bit so as not to embarrass Joe, whom ESPN considers the “star” of the broadcast, though if you watch enough he does slip in a few corrections. He also asks Joe really dumb questions to that Joe can answer without getting too confused, which I find amusing.

And he’s the best play by play guy in the business, though I did think he slipped a bit last year, but I thought all the Giants announcers slipped a bit last year, which I blame on the shitty team they had to watch everyday, rather than there being something wrong with them.

Bonds stands alone.

I don't get Steve Phillips

I don’t get how this guy ever got to be a GM, especially for a major market team. He wrote a feature for ESPN in his ongoing post-GM period a little while ago in which he assessed the sitting GMs. Every other GM profile was the description “he knows what he wants”. What on earth does this mean? I’m perfectly willing to accept that it means SOMETHING—and maybe even something useful. But not without some further explanation, which he didn’t provide. So he’s either too dumb to do anything but spout stoopid cliches or too dumb to realize he needs to explain himself further.

I hope he proves himself better at broadcasting than he was GMing or writing. (Though I don’t really care, as I don’t have ESPN anymore.)

Confession: I wouldn’t have minded ESPN firing Jon Miller if it meant that he would stick with the Giants on weekends from now on.

Did ESPN hold a mock press conference for Phillips before they introduced him?

The problem I have with Steve Phillips is that he’s not a trained broadcaster and he’s just lucked into his position instead of going through a process of earning it. He used to be a GM and now he’s the supposed darling of ESPN’s baseball telecasts, for no better reason than that he sounds smart. That is more indicative of favoritism on ESPN’s part than actual talent that Phillips has.

If that is the case and it very much looks like it, that is just ESPN pandering to the average fan for the ratings once again and not giving a damn about the integrity of its programming. ESPN has become a bloated, corrupt entity that is all about the shine and very little about the substance. Unless they can have it both ways…just ask the Cowboys and Pacman Jones about that.

I have to agree. I have been known to sit in the car for 10 minutes after getting home, just to hear Miller on the radio, even though the game is on in HD inside the house.

One of my favorite “miller-isms” is when he starts into a story about going to a game when he was younger, and interspersing the game call at the same time. “ I remember seeing Willie Mays play against the Dodgers at Chavez Ravine. He walks up to the plate against Drysdale and……there’s a line drive into right field, Lewis rounds third…coming home. Giants take the lead for the first time in the game”

On ESPN broadcasts, Jon seemingly has to dumb himself down in order for Joe Morgan to keep up or to keep things as broad as possible. He doesn’t really have the freedom to go off on tangents as he often does on radio. ESPN probably gives him a list of topics to cover at certain times during a broadcast.

During the postseason games on radio last year, there was a weird tension between Joe and Jon. Joe was giving grouchier-than-usual, told-you-so answers, and he was having none of Miller’s attempts at humor. A couple times Miller sounded so taken aback by Joe’s pissiness that he fell silent, which is obviously rare for him. It sounded like a breakup. I don’t see how adding a second analyst is going to help. I’m all for deemphasizing Joe’s know-it-allness, but making Miller have to play referee is not going to sound good, nor is bruising Joe’s considerable ego.

It appears you may have to deal with them

The Giants schedule had a change in time on their website compared to schedules that have been released previously.

Sunday, May 17th (Lincecum bobblehead day) originally scheduled for 1:05PM is now listed as a 5:00PM. So that means ESPN is picking this game up. I can’t figure this one out. Giants had no national TV games in 2008 and already has one for 2009.

A McC newcomer but not outstanding.
