Bumgarner #1
Not much surprise, but only looking at minor league pitchers, Jim Callis has Bumgarner #1.
"Gary (Des Moines, Iowa): Hi, enjoy the chat. Is Madison Bumgarner the top pitching prospect in baseball? If not who is? Thank you.
Jim Callis: (1:59 PM ET ) David Price is the top pitching prospect in baseball, though he'll probably never see the minors again. If we're counting just minor leaguers, then yes, it's Bumgarner. "

sim (stockton, ca): as a giants fan should i be excited about jesus guzman’s winter league stats?
SportsNation Jim Callis: (2:02 PM ET ) “Excited” might be too much. He’s having a huge winter and might be a useful big leaguer, but I can’t see him being a star by any means.

for the giants, of course, useful big leaguer (for position players) is almost as good as being a star.

seriously
I was reading something earlier that said Posey could develop to hit 15-20 HRs a year, and my reaction was basically “holy crap 20 HRs?”

Yeah
when was the last time we’ve had a cleanup hitter with 20? (I know, not that long ago)

and more Giants
James (San Leandro, CA): As a Giant’s fan we have heard a lot about Posey but we havn’t heard much about the guys drafted after posey so what are your thoughts on Conor Gillaspie, Roger Kieschnick and Brandon Crawford?
Jim Callis: (2:39 PM ET ) I like Gillaspie, though he was a good value as a sandwich pick, think he’ll be a solid regular. Kieschnick has some interesting power and tools and will be a solid regular if he tones down his approach a little and makes consistent contact. I’m less sold on Crawford, just not sure he’ll hit enough.

Tim (CA): Why is Bumgarner ranked so high? From what I heard he only has a good fastball but not any off-speed stuff.
Jim Callis: (2:45 PM ET ) That’s crazy. He needs to work on his changeup, but it’s coming and his hard slider will be a weapon.

Tim clearly doesn’t know shit. Either that or he’s actually Tim Alderson and is just pissed that he gets overlooked in our system because of Mad Bum.
