Salary Dump for Salary Dump
The Dodgers and Scott Boras came up with a win/win situation to the Andruw Jones albatross contract. The Dodgers now want to trade Jones and his lower 2009 salary. Why doesn't Ned and Brian met at a bar in The Castro and hammer out a salary dump trade.
Andruw Jones for Dave Roberts with the Giants on the hook for nothing more than the $6.5M they are already scheduled to pay Roberts in 2009.
Why would Ned and Brian agree to such a deal? Because both players are not helping their current team and the change of team might help.

Not trade him for someone just as useless but slower?

that’s how we ended up getting stuck with Steve Finley. no thanks, I’d rather just DFA him.

Yeah, but Finley was better than Alfonzo
And I do think that Jones could certainly be better, or at least more exciting, than Roberts. Did he fall off the cliff defensively as well as offensively? In his prime, he was one of the best defenders in the game.

he hasn’t been very good defensively for awhile.
and finley may have been better than alfonzo but he still sucked. we would have been better off DFA’ing alfonzo.

That’s just it. If you are already going to DFA Roberts and eat the $6.5M why not first take a chance on another player before eating the monies? If Jones doesn’t work out then you try for another salary dump or can DFA him.

Yeah, but see Steve Finley, c. 2006 for the downside of this strategy.

Jones
PMR thinks he’s above average, UZR wants to have his children. I haven’t seen him play lately – does he look bad at CF?
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

Hm, I thought UZR used to say he was crap in CF, I guess they might have changed the methodology. Or I’m mistaken.

That Was UZR With STATS Data.
The currently publicly available UZR found on Fangraphs uses BIS data. UZR based on STATS data seems to no longer be publicly available.

Speculations , please. On the level if possible.
And not MY normal level , either…what the hell happened to Andruwoo , anyway?
Didn’t Cox once call him one of the best players he’d ever seen?

Well, speed is not really our greatest need
With Winn, Lewis, Burriss, Velez, and even Renteria. If there is a potential for Jones’ bat to wake up again, he DOES have what we need, whereas Roberts certainly doesn’t.

I would much rather just give Roberts the ax

Why not, I guess
At least Jones was actually a good hitter once, and still plays good defense.

Andruw Jones is done
He’s presently playing in the Dominican league, and a Met fan I know watches those games and says he is horrendous. There were rumors about the Mets getting him and he’s petrified that that might happen. Dave Roberts would provide more value to the Giants just as a pinch runner. I think Andruw is going to be allowed to become a free agent anyway by terms of the deferral, so it’s all moot

I'm in
Someone with Andruw’s potential as a 5th OF? makes sense to me, he has the potential to be much more useful to the Giants than Dave Roberts does
Todd Jennings: If he's on the DL, he can't suck as much, right?

I would agree
Except that I haven’t seen a cogent analysis of what’s going on with him. Until someone has a “Eureka!” moment regarding a flaw in his mechanics, I doubt anyone is going to see much value there. Or maybe he needs glasses. If there’s something that will help, I sure hope someone figures it out, cuz I like Andruw. Until then, however, I’m really glad that the Giants didn’t get him, and I hope they don’t.

I did just notice that he put up a nice line in AAA last year
In a small sample size of 31 AB, he hit 4 hr, and .323/.361/.710
That theoretically suggests there’s something left in the tank, but then again, Todd Linden, Lance Niekro, etc. etc.

Andruw Jones has a .000000000000000000000000000000000001% chance of being useful in 2009. Dave Roberts has a .0000000000000000000000000000000000000001% chance of being useful in 2009. As soon as I’m done counting zeroes, I’ll let you know where I stand on this proposal.

From the article:
The Dodgers signed Jones last winter to be their big bat, but he hit .158 with three home runs in 75 games. The five-time All-Star reported to camp significantly overweight, endured boos from opening day on, underwent knee surgery in May, ended the season on the bench and then asked to be traded.
However, even at his new low salary, interested teams could wait to see if the Dodgers release him instead.
The Dodgers then would owe all but the minimum $400,000 salary.
Perhaps it is a combination of overweight+lack of confidence. I imagine the right hitting coach could help a lot. Tony Gwynn could probably save this guy. Carney Lansford, perhaps not.
I do really like the idea of trying to be first in line when he becomes uber-cheap.

I'd still rather have Roberts
You think Andruw Jones is going to be happy as a fifth outfielder?? Good luck with that. You’re going to get a 400 pound whiner. Dave Roberts is a good guy and much better suited for a bench role. It’s irrelevant who the better player is.

not worth the roster spot

Isn’t he still striking out like 40% of his at bats even in the Dominican league? That means he would probably do the same 75% of the time in the bigs. Ha

I wouldn't mind...
if only because Jones is projected to be much better next season than Roberts. Then again, he could just loaf around and be a fatass again, so I’m not entirely sure that it would be a good idea.
Aaron King is still my homeboy... iffy mechanics and all.
