Pretty cool concept. Best SF/NY Giants players of all time, broken up according to whether they were home grown or acquired via trade, free agency, etc.. A bit on the long side, but read to the end to see who wins in a head-to-head match up.

I just read this

It’s pretty great. I particularly like the inclusion of Will Clark By Any Means Necessary.

It kind of bothers me that he benched McCovey for Cepeda.

..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

yeah that’s a bit ridiculous.

Cepeda Did Out Perform McCovey In The Years Both He And McCovey Shared In SF

Willie had the better career but Orlando’s Giants Days were better.

by giantsrainman on Jan 2, 2009 9:30 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Exqueeze Me?

Look at what McCovey did between 1966 and 1970 (and keep in mind that the league average hitter hit .253/.312/.357 in 1968). As good as Cepeda was, except for two great season in 1961 and 1963, he couldn’t touch McCovey, and even those season look pedestrian compared to McCovey’s 1969 and 1970. Not to mention that, like you said, McCovey had a much better career, and spent 18 years in a Giant uniform, compared to Cepeda’s 8. Saying that Cepeda was better than McCovey when they were both Giants, while probably true, is pretty weird argument. Jack Sanford out-pitched Gaylord Perry during the four years in which they were both Giants – would you claim that Sanford was a better Giant than Perry?

..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

Not Saying I Would Have Picked Cepeda - I Won't Have - I Would Have Gone With McCovey

But I am saying there is an arguement to be made for Cepeda and I can understand the author going that direction.

I don't understand

Do you think that Orlando’s Giants Days were better or not?

..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

Why Does Their Have To Be Only One Acceptable Answer?

Why can’t you and I (and perhaps most other Giants Fans too) think it is McCovey with the author still having a valid reason to think it is Cepeda?

by giantsrainman on Jan 3, 2009 1:09 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

No problem

I’m just trying to understand what you think, since first you said that Cepeda’s Giants days were better, but now you’re saying you’d go with McCovey.

..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

because there's no valid reason?

Psycho killer, qu'est-ce que c'est?

by shikantaza on Jan 4, 2009 8:06 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

That was the reason

Putting Cepeda at first and McCovey in the outfield and Terry as the top pinch hitter was done only because I wanted Will Clark on the team.

There was no other reason
None
Zilch
De Nada

And I understand the complaints (you should see the eggs that Met fans have been throwing at me for starting Ray Knight over Howard Johnson)

But hey!
It’s MY list…

And in the end, it’s just a fun time waster

But thanks for reading it

I can't win

Keep in mind Mark Kotsay was on the Marlins All Time Home Grown roster.

Be thankful you root for a team that has multiple Hall of famers to choose from!!!!

I liked the list

Although I do think it could have used a bit more Bocock.

The 2008-2009 offseason is driving me sane!

Loved the Urban Dictionary usage of Kevin Mitchell as a verb!

They say some players get out of bed hitting; Pablo Sandoval doesn't wait that long

Just realized that with a little effort the Mitchell link coud’ve been
turned into a bocock joke and nested under hairball’s post.

The article was a good read, long, but funny and well written.

I loved it, but...

Hoooo boy… both McCovey and Clark were better than Cepeda. How can you not mention McGinnity? Jason Schmidt was a pretty amazing acquired pitcher. Matt Williams was probably better than Lindstrom. How about Roger Bresnahan? The best catcher in Giants history doesn’t get a mention. Rich Aurilia may have been better than Alvin Dark. Still, a ton of fun to talk about!

Loved it overall, though I second (third?fourth?) the McCovey v. Cepeda complaints. It’s always fun learning about those old-timey New York Giants, too. Sometimes I think the franchise underplays just how awesome some of those teams/players were, but I guess that’s to be expected given that they played in New York. Personal favorite note from this one: Mel Ott was just 5’9" AND the subject of the original “nice guys finish last” comment. That’s a pretty cool claim to fame right there.

The homegrown bullpen is too big

Do we really need 5 relievers with all the CGs Marichal, Marquard, Matthewson, and Perry would be throwing?

Dump Brantley and put Bobby Bonds on the roster as reserve outfielder and PR.

Thanks for reading it!

Hey all, thanks for reading the post.
Trust me, I struggled long and hard with where to put Cepeda, McCovey and Bill Terry on the roster and the only way I could squeeze Will Clark on there was starting Cepeda and putting McCovey in the outfield.

When I lived in the Bay Area (1997-1990 and 2005-2008) I never saw a player more loved than Will Clark and felt it would be a sin to leave him off the team.

That decision (plus my wanting to honor the late Hall of Famer Ross Youngs) probably kept Bobby Bonds off of the roster.

As for the home grown bullpen… hey wouldn’t you want Lincecum, Perry, Mattewson, Marichal and Marquard rested and ready for the playoffs?

I considered McGinnty… but I figured the early McGraw Giants were well represented by Matthewson and Marquard.

As for Roger Bresnahan… you are 100% correct
He should be on the team

I will make the change.

I occaisionally make a change when I realize I made a mistake (I had Curt Schilling in the acquired Red Sox team when someone pointed out he was originally drafted by the Red Sox… something you’d think a Red Sox fan like me would have remembered.)

And some Rockies and Marlins fans made some corrections here and there.

So sometime today I will put Roger Bresnahan as the starting catcher for the acquired team.
Again, thanks for reading the post and tell your friends.

I love these kind of debates.

And on the fifth day..

As for the home grown bullpen… hey wouldn’t you want Lincecum, Perry, Mattewson, Marichal and Marquard rested and ready for the playoffs?

Everyone but Lincecum would be getting an extra day of rest all year long. Great list otherwise (well, Cepeda/McCovey), but c’mon, Sully, can you really justify Brantley over Bobby Bonds?

Hey

Hey, I had to exclude some of my all time favorite Red Sox players from the Red Sox list.

I have 5 relievers on each team.
And it was Bobby Bonds or WIll Clark

(I love getting passionate responses like this. If you will believe it I got some passionate responses from Colorado Rockies fan too!!!)
