Seven Giants on provisional WBC rosters

Jesus Guzman and Pablo Sandoval for Venezuela

Brooks McNiven for Canada (also, former Giants farmhand Chris Begg returns from the 2006 squadron)

Bengie Molina and Jonathan Sanchez for Puerto Rico. Also someone named Andres Torres, who played in the PR Winter League this past year. He played with Iowa in the Cubs org in 2008 and for some reason, was listed as the Giants players in the WBC. Who knows?

Sharlon Schoop for Netherlands

Go here: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/news/wbc_09/roster.jsp?team=940 for full roster info.

I'm really excited for team Mexico. I shouldn't count on Yovani Gallardo making the final cut with his injury issues from last season, but even if Matt Garza and Joakim Soria stay, I'll be happy.

I can't wait for this to start. 2006 was amazing.

The WBC will be interesting, but not something I’m wild or even thinking about right now. I’m waiting for the 2009 Giants to hit the field not team Puerto Rico or Venezuela.
I just hope this tournament doesn’t hurt any Giants’ players in a bad way, like tiring them out at the end of the season because of so many games played or things like that.

Just say NO to free agents, they take your draft picks.

Andres Torres

he’s a non-roster invitee to spring training, that’s why he’s listed with the Giants.

Yadier Molina

http://www.worldbaseballclassic.com/2006/about/index.jsp?sid=wbc

Q: Who is eligible to play in the World Baseball Classic?
A: A player is eligible to participate on a World Baseball Classic team if:
The player is a citizen of the nation the team represents. (Additionally, if a player is qualified for citizenship or to hold a passport under the laws of a nation represented by a team, but has not been granted citizenship or been issued a passport, then the player may be made eligible by WBCI upon petition by the player or team.)
The player is a permanent legal resident of the nation or territory the team represents.
The player was born in the nation or territory the team represents.
The player has one parent who is, or if deceased was, a citizen of the nation the team represents.
The player has one parent who was born in the nation or territory the team represents.

Note: In the event a player appropriately appears on more than one provisional roster, he may select the team for which he wishes to play.

So if one of Garza’s parents is a Mexican citizen or was born there, that’s his in.

Maybe he's technically allowed

But just because he’s of Mexican descent doesn’t mean he feels any connection w/ or loyalty to Mexico. Actually, I think it would be a joke if such a player exploited the technicality just to get into the WBC.

I dunno. I joke with my dad about how we’re the least Mexican Mexicans in the world because we have Anglo first names and we don’t speak Spanish, but I still root for Mexican sports teams. I’m still engaged and interested in Mexican politics and news. I can’t comment on Garza’s (or anyone else’s) personal connection to the cultural identity, but it’s not totally impossible for a kid born and raised in the States to want to embrace heritage.

This is why the WBC doesn't matter:

It would be one thing if all the best players from each country played. Then it would really showcase the talent of each nation, and it would be some sort of awesome all-star fest. However, only some of the best talent will be there. I don’t see how one gets excited to see that.

Also, why would any Giants fan want to have any of the Giants participate, especially the pitchers? The regular season is long enough for young players, but asking them to add another month or two or however long this thing is, is just crazy. I am thrilled Timmy is not playing, and I am really, really concerned about Sanchez. He couldn’t make it a full regular season without getting tired/injured…and that was only pitching 5 innings a game or so! This is a dumb time waster that I might only watch if the USA actually makes it to the championship game.

Yeah

Doesn’t a player’s team have to give consent for them to play? Seems dumb for the Giants to allow him to participate, given what we know about his endurance issues.

Talking about Sanchez, if that wasn’t clear.

by The Double Deuce on Jan 20, 2009 9:30 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I’m sure the Giants are going to STRONGLY discourage Sanchez from participating. For a guy who wilted due to overuse last year to add to his workload (in a manner the Giants won’t be able to control) playing in a make believe event would be the height of stupidity.

While there is a lot of Yankees and Red Sox, other teams have been on. It would be one thing if all the best players from each country played.

Most if not all do for every country except the USA. The Caribbean and Asian send their best and are very proud to represent and want to win for pride.

Looking at the WBC schedule it does not appear all that bad for pitchers. And the games are scheduled while regular spring training games are being played.
