I still think Pie could be pretty good if he was given a chance. An outfield with Markakis, Jones, Scott and Pie is pretty solid.

Mmmm pie
Pie is the kind of player that I wished SF had roaming CF. Great defense, speed, nice arm and if he could post an OBP of .335+ believe he would be a better fit than Rowand in CF.

This Pie tastes like crap
every time the Cubs gave him a chance he played like garbage. He’s still young enough to turn it around, but he’s starting to look like a minor league stud that became a major league stiff.

Actually his minor league stats are kinda underwhelming. I never understood the fascination with this guy.
Don't think, it could only hurt the ballclub.

It's not a bad pie, it just needs some more time in the oven
Like you said, he’s young, and relatively speaking he hasn’t had that much time in the majors. I think getting a new start in a smaller market city will do him good

I find this kind of an odd trade for both teams
It seems to me like the Cubs are giving up on Pie pretty early, especially since their OFs are Soriano, Fukudome, and Milton Bradley, none of whom should ever be playing Center Field. As for the Orioles, they have absolutely no pitching whatsoever (seriously, look at their 5 starters) and they are trading away one of their relatively promising young arms.

mlbtraderumors.com was speculating that Olson might now be sent to San Diego as part of a Peavy trade. Supposedly the Padres were interested in Olson in the past.

The Do Have Money To Spend
They stand today at about $65M for their Roster. If they spend say $25M to add a couple of free agent arms (say 2 of Sheets, Perez, and Wolf) that bad rotation will move pretty damm close to an AL league average rotation.

Plus the Orioles believe they have at least two young pitchers – Tillman and Matusz – knocking on the door.

I think Matusz could be on the fast track, as he looked almost ML ready while he was still in college, but I have serious doubts about Chris Tillman. He’s had great numbers so far in the minors, but I don’t think his stuff is as dominating as some people think. He might hit a wall once he gets called up to the bigs

What makes you think they're going to bump payroll?
Their payroll last year was around $67M. Before their big 2007 spending spree – and we saw how well that worked out for them – they were around $72M in 2006. Seems to me they’re more likely to stay around that $65 number than add $25M in free agents. Anyway the timing is pretty lousy for making a run in the AL East.
