Ratto's SFGate article on Neukom
I couldn't believe I read something by Ray Ratto and found it interesting or informative. Then I read the second half and my faith in Ray was restored.

Good. I hope this kills all the Manny rosterbation.

of course it won't
what would you expect him to say?? “We’d like him to ask for more money and more years??” This would kill the Manny talk if other teams were offering Manny three and four year deals, but since nobody else is either, the Giants’ are still in the Manny discussions and Giants’ fans will continue to talk about it.

RX, you are going to end up being disappointed. Manny is going to sign with the Dodgers. They already put a two year plus an option offer on the table. The Giants do not even want to match that, much less exceed it.
It ain’t happening. I wish every would get over it already.
I am seriously dreading this and the rest of the Giants boards when it doesn’t happen. Heh…

I have said from day one that Manny will re-sign with the Dodgers, so I won’t be surprised or very much disappointed when it happens. I just think that the Giants’ SHOULD sign the one guy out there that makes them the prohibitive favorite in the NL west. And because he does make so much sense for the 2009 Giants’, other fans are going to continue to talk about the possibility as well. It just amazes me how many fans are just willing to concede the 2009 season and worry about the future. I’m glad the organization doesn’t share this “vision.” I don’t see why you would concede on Opening Day, when you have the money to buy yourself a contender like so many other teams do. All I can say here is that many of the same Giants’ fans who don’t want Manny are going to be the same fans that are complaining this season when Timmy and Matt are losing 1-0 games. I would love to see the Giants’ pull off some brilliant trade or signing in the next few weeks that makes Manny unnecessary, but I have a feeling if there was something out there it would have been done already.

At the price Manny is going to get, signing him would be stupid. Would it make the Giants better in ‘09? Sure, but if you take the view that only ’09 matters, we should have been handing out 10 year 200 million dollar deals to CC and Tex in addition to Manny. I mean, fuck ’10 or ’11, right? Let’s win now!
I believe there is value in being payroll flexible. No one is “conceeding” ’09. They are looking at a roster full of question marks and a team in the middle of a rebuild and saying, “Why should the Giants ditch the chance to be good for a long time just because the rest of the division blows? Is making the playoffs in ’09 worth taking on even more anchor contracts that will inhibit payroll maneuverability when the rebuild is closer to complete and the Giants are ready to reap some of the benefits of a patient rebuild?”
We’ve gone down the “Fuck it…vets or bust” path before. People bitched all along as it was happening. Now that the team is finally doing what so many cried and bitched for, those same people want vets again.

We’re talking about one player here, Manny Ramirez. We’re not talking about trading any kids, we’re not talking about a massive influx of veterans. We’re talking about one player, the ONLY player who would make the Giants’ 2009 lineup decent. We’re also talking about a two year deal, three at the most. You make it sound like Manny’s coming in here on a ten year 300 million deal if he came here. As for Tex and CC, if you signed players like that you think they’ll only make you good in 2009?? When you’re talking about Manny, Tex and CC, you’re talking about the elite players of the game, not the Dave Roberts, Ray Durhams, Moises Alous and the likes they brought in here the last few seasons. The failure of the “vets or bust” policy was that the wrong vets were signed. None of the players we’re discussing here are past their prime.

I believe Manny is going to get a 4 year deal. I think it will be 3 plus a player option. I also think he will be a useful player for about half of this contract. If the Giants were in the AL, I’d be all over this. Since that is not the case, he would need to play defense. Something he has struggled to do even in his prime.
No thanks.

where’s this four year deal coming from?? The best offer he has right now is two years. I think if he’s lucky he gets three, but more probably it’s two years and an option.

Well, this at least settles a lot of conjecture, if one reads the other article
Chris Haft spoke more on the subject, and seems to indicate that any roster moves now are likely moot. They’ll wait until mid-season to swoop in with their hopefully spare cash and full understanding of what they have with the kids. Mentions again are Ishikawa and Guzman getting a chance to make it.

How can you point to Haft’s article as showing anything when he clearly says in the article that he’s using the Ratto article as his source?? The next scoop Haft gets is his first. I know even less than Haft does, but I’m still willing to bet that the Giants sign Crede or Wigginton if they don’t make a trade.

Haft was the first to have the Giants and Renteria exchanging contract proposals.

you may see comments like this at the bottom of Henry Schulman articles, but you don’t see comments like this around here. The reason I love this board is because I feel the only idiot posting here is me.

actually, if you’ve ever read Sabean’s comments on why he didn’t pursue Vlad, the exaggerated response you’ve posted here is actually the proper one.

everyone does it
