Giants will go after Holliday in 2010
Everyone is talking about Manny right now but the Giants are waiting for their Holliday in 2010. Matt Holliday will be a free agent in 2010 and the Giants have 35 mill coming off their books. It all makes sense to go after the younger man in Holliday next year then to hire Manny in his latter years.
For the Giants to get Manny their payroll would jump to 115 mill or more. That will not happen especially with Baer in charge. So it looks like Giants fans will have to wait another year for a bat while the Dodgers will eventually sign Manny right after they dump Andrew Jones on thursday. Let's hope Giants fans get a extra Holliday next year for the push to the playoffs.

YAY! You're back!
I kinda agree with you, in that I think Holliday would be a good addition (obviously, price dependent). However, we would need to make a move with an outfielder probably before doing that. Unless Schierholtz takes a nasty shit between now and then.

Total cop-out, but...
ATP New York last year: Shellac, My Bloody Valentine, Built to Spill, Dino Jr. with Lou Barlow, Bob Mould doing almost all Husker Du songs, plus more and more and more and more. Of course, it was a three day festival.
Second place utter cop-out… ATP Long Beach 2003. The Stooges, Spoon, Har Mar Superstar, Lou Barlow (again) fronting the tribute to Elliott Smith…
Best single-day concert ever is a toughie, but the Murder City Devils, Rocket from the Crypt, and Botch at the El Rey was a pretty keen night, as was the MCDs and At the Drive-In at Bottom of the Hill.

I would have to say one of my favorite concerts was also my first, seeing Metallica at Lollapalooza in ’95 with SoundGarden and DEVO (who dressed up in weird, yellow plastic suits).
Being 15 at the time, and just learning how to play guitar with “One” being the first song ever learned on acoustic guitar, to hear the helicopter noise live as the lights went out and then that beginning riff still gives me goosebumps when I think about it

Have you listened to Death Magnetic at all?
It is very similar to …And Justice for All. I agree that Load is barely tolerable, and Reload being intolerable, but I’d hope that you wouldn’t hold those two albums (not to mention St. Anger) against them in the future. They’ve really stepped things up.
All that aside, they hardly play anything from Load/Reload in their shows, so the concerts are still awesome.

I maintain that if Load were released by a different band it would be given a lot more credit. It’s a solid CD. St. Anger never happened.
My only problem with Death Magnetic is that James needs to realize he is not really a singer. He’s a great rock singer, but he should never try to actually sing.

RE: Load
That’s probably true, but it’s still a very poor output from a band that has the ability to put out fantastic output. At this point, I kind of wonder if they were bored with the whole metal thing and just wanted to try something more bluesy.
RE: Death Magnetic
Unforgiven 3 (easily the worst song on the album) really shows his limitations in the singing department. Sticking to yelling (for lack of a better word) most of the words would probably help him. I do think that the poor recording quality affects this album as well, but certainly not as much as St. Anger. The songs on St. Anger aren’t all that terrible (they still sound good live). I think it’s just the awful recording and Lars’ trash can drums that destroy that album.
Semi-on-topic-question: Favorite song on Death Magnetic? I think That was Just your Life barely beats out Cyanide.

No doubt they were trying something different for Load and people weren’t expecting it. It just wasn’t the Metallica everybody knew and loved.
I was suprised when they started playing a song off St. Anger live and it didn’t sound awful. So I agree with you that production is what killed it. That being said, everybody on the floor kind of just stopped and waited for that song to be over before we started getting into it again.
I think I might have to agree with you on the favorite songs. All Nightmare Long is pretty bad ass also. My Apocalypse really brings it back to the old Metallica. Unforgiven 3 started out great. When just the intruments were playing I thought it was going to be awesome. Then the singing hit. He is much better at “barking” out the lyrics.

Seriously? Wow, you are the only person I’ve met that feels that way. To each his own, I guess. Even if you think the Black album was too commercialized, it’s still gotta be better than St. Anger, IMO.

Well, the Black album is horrible. Perhaps backlash from their 4 or 5 great 80s albums which are heavy metal canon… but I absolutely cannot listen to it.
Totally distinct from Bonn Scott/Brian Johnson AC/DC. I prefer the Scott – and Back in Black commericalized AC/DC much like Black album did… but Brian Johnson AC/DC is still good…
St. Anger was WHOLLEY unlike Black album/load crap etc. Clearly influenced by later heavy music like Korn or System of a Down (the latter I like, the former, meh). It’s not a great album, but there are a couple good songs on it (St. Anger, for one).
But as you say, there’s no accounting for taste.

I saw Tom Waits last year or maybe 2 years ago. I had no idea who he was. After listening to some crappy story about selling Henry Ford’s farts in Coke bottles (the story makes sense to me now, I guess, after looking into him after the show) and listening to the first few minutes of his set I ignored it to talk with the friends I went with. It looked like his fans had a good time though. That’s nice.

I moved in down the block from the Victoria right before the Waits/Sperry benefit. Saw it as a sign of some sort. Great Tom set.
His NYE show at the Orpheum was a good local show, as was the Don Hyde benefit at the Raven in Healdsburg.
I’d also rate The Clash at the Kezar Pavillion (1979) as a great local show (with the Dead Kenedy’s and the Cramps in support) .
I also would rate one of the 300 or so Dead/Jerry shows I saw pretty high, but kind of forget which…I’ll go with 12/26/79.

Another worth mentioning
R.E.M. at the Greek Theater last year. They played more new stuff than I would’ve chosen, but still, good show. Modest Mouse and The National were the openers.

Going on the second night made it even better – I bought the cheapest seats available, for the ridiculously steep lawn at the top of the Greek Theater, but there a number of better seats free, so I was able to work my way up pretty close to the front.

The National at Bimbo’s in ’07 is near the top of my list.
Also really enjoyed the Cold War Kids show at GAMH last year, something about them and that place just seemed right together.
Arcade Fire @ Greek, went both nights and I’m glad I did.
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at GAMH last year was also a good one.
And any Bloc Party show. Always have a good time at those.

But went to one at the Greek in…1985, I think? Fables of the Reconstruction tour? Anyway it was awesome.
And the year before (maybe) at a theater somewhere…Stipe had hurt his foot, so he didn’t leave the stage before the encore, just got a big vase that was sitting on the stage, pulled flowers out of it, and threw them into the audience while we all waited for the rest of the band to come back.

I went to see MU330 at a bowling alley in Soledad CA in 1999. Alkaline Trio opened for them, I bought all their stuff afterwards and am still a huge fan. There was about 15-20 other people there. MU330 never actually played, a fight broke out in the bar and the show was cancelled halfway through their first song.

Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, I think it was October ’95 at Shoreline. Highlight of my life! I remember it very vividly for how young I was.
Velvet Revolver the day before their first album came out was also awesome, I was second row and it was crazy.
I’ve seen the Black Crowes 4 times, and the first time, in Pensacola, I was second row at a festival. They played most of their hits, less of the obscure tunes, and that’s my honorable mention.

Black Crowes at San Jose State ’93 … Chris Robinson stopped during Thorn In My Pride and scolded an upstart of moshers in the front, saying: “If you want to do that shit, go to a Pearl Jam show”. Great moment in my concert going history. That, and the girl in front of me wearing the gold chain-linked, see-through dress. My girlfriend kept wanting to move for some reason, but I convinced her that my refined understanding of acoustics was much more attuned than hers, and we stayed put. Good times.

I’m in a great NL only Fantasy league (it’s been “alive” for 20 years) and we have a couple openings this year (they come up very rarely) if you’re interested. PInk Floyd – the Wall
Pretenders – first tour, first album – festival seating – my boyfriend, at the time, and I were in the front center getting squished into the fence in front of Chrissie Hynde. She fanned us with her towel.
Tom Petty with Bob Dylan – I think I was the only one there to see Petty
The Clash
REM
Rolling Stones

Queen – my very first concert ever, I was in high school and my parents made me take my cousin (male)or I couldn’t go.

Best band performance: The Who (four different times + Townshend solo once) 1982 – 2006
Best individual performnce: Smokey Robinson (three different times, plus again in 11 days!) 1986 – 2009
Best lineup: The Police, Madness & Oingo Boingo 1983
Most disaapointing: Van Halen (seemed to want to show off skills as opposed to play music) 2008, Gladys Knight (didn’t sing much) and Bryan Ferry (crooner trying to rock out with screaming guitars)
Most fun: English Beat 2008 & Violent Remmes 1988

Great Hijack!
1: Nirvana, Butthole Surfers, Chokebore @ Oakland Colliseum, 12/31/93
Little did I know how lucky I was to be there as a 15 year old kid. Truly a surreal memory. Chokebore ended up being one of my favorite bands too.
2: Fugazi @ Tejon Theatre, Bakersfield, 1995
Could have been any number of Fugazi shows that I’ve been to as they pretty much will rock any band I’ve ever seen off the fucking stage. But I chose the first time I saw ’em.
3: Mogwai @ Bimbo’s, 2003
Damn near perfect sound and set list. Got myself a nice seat at a table thinking it would be a sitdown kind of shoegaze show. Not the case. Half way through the set, had to grab my lady and fight my way into the crowd.
Honorable mention to a couple of Weezer shows, not because I like them all that much, but the first was before they released their first record, and it was at this little shithole dive in fornt of about 30 people in Visalia. The second time I saw them after they were huge, a couple friends and I were able to make friends with Gene Simmons (using the “my friends band opened for them before they were big” routine) and got backstage, which consisted of free beer, Chris Hardwick, Shannon Tweed and 15 year old girls.
Best show this year: 31 Knots @ Rickshaw Stop. These guys just blow my mind live.

How do you figure?
Holliday’s contract is up after the 2009 season. Why wouldn’t we just sign him then?

he’ll probably want $25M per season and that would eat nearly all of the money coming off the 2009 books. Nice idea if we could get him for much cheaper, but he’ll likely get Teixeira money. Then again, he won’t have those Coors field numbers anymore and could come at a bit of a discount (though, I doubt it.)

This season will really tell the story.
If his peripherals stay the same and he declines, then he’s a product of Coors and he’ll be paid probably only in the 15M range. If his peripherals stay the same and he stays the same, then he’s getting big bucks. But if his peripherals decline and his numbers decline, then he’ll probably take a smaller deal. I’d be interested in that if his stock is lowered so much that he has to take a deal that involves only a guaranteed year or two plus incentives plus options.

I think I saw U2 in ’87. Was that when they were touring in support of Joshua tree?
Coolist opening I ever saw. The lights are down and just the organ opening “Where The streets Have No Name” plays, then there’s a red back light on The Edge while he plays the opening guitar lick, then the lights come up as Clayton and Mullen kick in, then appears on a riser above the drums and Bono and brings everybody to their feet with the opening lyrics “I want to run…I want to hide…I want to tear down the walls that hold me inside”

I saw them at the Oakland Coliseum on the Popmart Tour in 1997 – it was a tour for a shitty album in a lousy venue, and I didn’t even like the opening act (Oasis). But it was still a hell of a show.

I-Beam!
Was always a great place to spend a Monday night (live music)—or any night if you dug drug-fueled dance music.
Two shows that I shoulda had on my list:
Big Black—Your basic power trio: guitar, bass, drum machine (Steve Albini wearing a tee that said: That Boy Needs a Good Killin).
Butthole Surfers—Saturday afternoon matinee show complete with medical operation films (think humans being nuetered), naked dancing girls, and inverted cymbals filled with lighter fluid, set aflame then struck. It wasnt weird to dose at a BS show in the mid/late eighties, but to walk out onto the Haight when it was over and still have it be daylight was otherworldy. I’ve been recalling this show a bunch as we checked them out on NYE 08 at the Fillmore. Gibby and co. still have it.
How was the Earthless/Orchid show last night WTF? We skipped it due a rare lapse of fiscal responsibility—the G’s wanting mucho-$$$$$$$ from us today.

Memorable concerts...
All-time favorite/nothing else comes close: The Who, 1975 at Winterland; stood about 20 feet from the stage.
Other notables:
- First ever: Robin Trower, with a couple local bands I’d never heard of opening: Pablo Cruise (not warmly received) and a band calledJourney. This was the pre-Steve Perry Journey that played long, spacey, Neal Schon-driven prog-rock songs with names like “Topaz” and “Kohoutek”. I have to say it: Journey was pretty awesome. I went out and bought their first two LP’s.
- Sweetest billing: The Who and Grateful Dead at one of the “Day on the Green” concerts (1976).
- What might have been: Led Zeppelin, 1976. Canceled when Robert Plant broke his leg.
- Backstage: Eddie Money, “The Backdoor”, San Diego State,1978. OK, so I’m walking back to my dorm at SDSU one night after a business class and I happen to stroll past “The Backdoor” concert hall. The side door is open and there’s this dude standing there keeping watch. I give a friendly “How’s it going?” kind of greeting. He says, “Cool”. I go, “So you got a concert going on tonight?” He goes, “Yeah—Eddie Money”. I go, “Sweet—he’s from the Bay Area, where I’m from (I didn’t know he was actually from New York and that he’d actually just gotten his career going in SF, with help from Bill Graham)”. So after chatting it up for a couple minutes, he goes, “Hey, you wanna watch from backstage?”. I say, “Sure”, and watched the whole concert from backstage (or sidestage). Lots of fun. Nice band—they sounded good. This was after he’d released his first LP and “Baby Hold On” and “Two Tickets to Paradise” were on the radio a little bit. The thing I remember the most: Eddie Money comes stumbling down the hallway from the dressing room a few minutes before they were going to go onstage. As he’s walking past, he turns and asks me, “You got any cocaine or whiskey?” I was fairly dumbstruck, and just shook my head and gurgled out a “no”.
