Yay for Rickey!
I don’t feel very strongly about Rice either way.
I continue to be pissed by the results for Blyleven, Trammell and Raines.

One of them claims it was a mistake...
…Corky Simpson says he just “goofed up” in leaving Henderson off his ballot.
The other 27 must not have believed that Henderson is actually retired yet.

1) the greatest leadoff man of all time takes his rightful place, but the second greatest leadoff man who ever lived doesn’t even get a quarter of the votes.
or
2) a man gets into the HOF who for many years was the least valuable of his team’s three outfielders.

Why wouldnt they be first ballot?
Alomar was probably the best all-around 2b ever. True that spitting incident and sharp decline in his career after his early 30s hurts, but he broke in at a young age and was good right away.
Larkin too seems like a shoe-in to me. 12 time all-star, won some gold gloves, didnt he win an MVP in the mid 90s too? Was the first 30/30 SS.

Big Mac should be in. I don’t care about what he said to Congress AFTER he retired or how dumb he looked not saying it. Baseball is about what happens on the field and since he didn’t wager on the sport and wasn’t put on the permanent suspension list like Shoeless Joe and Pete Rose, he should be in based on his baseball playing. In any event, since when should any baseball player, current or retired, NOT have a better reputation than Congress!
On those same grounds, the following players should also be in on the first ballot when they are up for election:
Palmeiro (up for selection in 2011)
Sosa (up for selection in 2013)
Roger Clemens (up for selection in 2013)
Barry Bonds should be in on the first ballot with a unanimous election (assuming no one forgets to include him on their ballot). (up for selection in 2013)

See, this is where personal bias starts to influence my reasoning that all the ‘ed players should be in the Hall. I’d be pissed to high hell that Palmeiro would be in the HOF and not Will Clark. Nuschler was ALWAYS the better hitter up until some butt-poking. Imagine if Will’s nagging injuries were ‘cleared’ up and he steadily improved production on his late 80’s/early 90s #’s. F*k Palmeiro.
Don't think, it could only hurt the ballclub.

He’d be in already.
Worked for Carlton, Warren Spahn, Gary Carter, Duke Snider, and it’s gonna work for Vizquel and Randy Johnson not too far off. Even Jackie Robinson got a bump.

This crap drives me nuts. [I’m looking at you 27 dumbass voters who left Rickey of the ballot, and it is uncharacteristically nice of me to overlook the guy who “forgot”.] If a player deserves to be in the HOF, voters should VOTE FOR HIM. If not, then don’t vote for him. The stats are not going to change in the next 12 months. The 5-year delay in eligibility is enough to get some historical perspective on a player’s place in the game of his era (and if it isn’t, then elevate the delay to 7 years or whatever).
But to deliberately withhold a vote from a candidate the voter KNOWS to be worthy is petty, immoral, dishonest, and an irresponsible use of the right to vote. It’s also stupid: what purpose is it serving? Does it create incentive for players to play better during their careers, lest they “only” get into the HOF in the 2nd or 3rd years of eligibility? Nonsense; Rickey Henderson (and Ruth, Mays, Aaron, etc. who also weren’t unanimous choices) could not have done any better. If the criterion for HOF is “best of the best,” then anyone who can’t see that Rickey, Mays, Ruth, Aaron weren’t the best of the best are unworthy of holding the right to vote.

One more reason withholding your vote doesn't work:
Furthermore, the HOF plaque does not say which ballot was the player’s successful one. It doesn’t say which year the player was inducted, nor how many ballots he appeared on, nor any kind of information that will outlast the withholding voter’s whimsical and narcissistic view that he is “sending a message” or whatever.
Serves. No. Purpose. And. Accomplishes. Nothing.
