Joel Guzman Released
The Tampa Bay Rays have DFA'd former top prospect 3B Joel Guzman.
Guzman appeared destined for stardom just two years ago, even putting up a .297/.353/.461 line in AAA Las Vegas as a 21 year old.
In 2006, the Dodgers traded him to Tampa Bay for Julio Lugo, and he hasn't been any good since.
Seems like the perfect person for us to target if we get the chance, as he is only 23. Could be one of those "change of scenery" guys.

Pass. He’d block…
…uh, that is, he’d block our…
…yeah, sign him and stash him somewhere. I’d give Ishikawa a better chance of starting at shortstop than I would for Guzman to figure it out, but sometimes the toolsy types really do click into place.

FYi
He’s been DFA’ed – not released, and the all the AL teams get first crack at him. In the NL, Bowden loves tools, so I’d be surprised if he got to us.
But yeah, seems like the perfect guy to take a flier on.
Jonathan Sanchez. He's left-handed, like Barry Zito. His fastball breaks 80, unlike Zito.

Do want?

Sure. He’s younger and more highly touted than most of the chuckleheads we’ve been drooling over, and as a former 3B prodigy who ate himself closer to 1B, Guzman can either serve as a role model or a cautionary tale for AnVil. Let’s grab him if we can.

Obviously he didn't pay enough for it

If you need to pay for those…services in installments, it’s either the best “services” you’ve ever had in your life or you’re one broke mofo.

I actually like this idea. If I remember correctly he suppose to be good with a glove at SS and third ( I’ll stand correct be any here that have seen him play on a regular bases and sate otherwise). Based on that he could at least be a good back/ emergency spare tire for both positions next year. ( Hey I enjoy you Ochoa but we both new this was not an exclusive permanent relationship going in. ) I will be curious to see if he is off their 40 man this November ( can you say rule V?) or a free agent.

Eh Idk
He’s already had a change of scenary and his move to TB didn’t seem to do him any good. There’s no harm in getting him and seeing what he can do at AAA next year though I guess.

I say yes
It’s not like he’s blocking much, and he shouldn’t cost a lot.

Sign Guzman and Dallas McPherson
and the Giants can set a record as the first team to have two players strike out 200+ times in a season.

Better Guzman than McPherson. That way, even though he’s hitting .185 he can hit a game winning HR off the Dodgers a la Tom Goodwin.
