2008 Opening Day Starting Lineup
Lf-Dave Roberts
Cf-Aaron Rowand
Rf-Randy Winn
3b-Rich Aurilia
ss-Brian Bocock
2b-Ray Durham
1b-Rich Aurilia
C-Bengie Molina

Today's Game Lineup
Lf-Fred Lewis
Cf-Randy Winn
Rf-Nate Schierholtz
3b-Scott McClain
ss-Emmanuel Burriss
2b-Eugenio Velez
1b-Travis Ishikawa
C-Pablo Sandoval

In my opinion, today was the best lineup of the season yet. I'm actually looking forward to the next season even though the Giants are 62-80. Lots of people thought we would finish with 62 total wins.

Anyways, for the offseason I hope our new guy fires Sabean and Bochy and replaces them with 2 guys that are all for youngsters. They've overdone their stay and they are continuing to hold back our rebuilding. I want Lewis to have the rest of the year off and have surgery for his bunion to be fully healthy for opening day next year. I want Emmanuel Burriss and our other youngsters to continue their development in winter/fall ball.

Regarding trades and FAs,  I would first off, like the Giants to trade Aaron Rowand. I knew from the minute he recorded the last out at the 2007 All Star Game that he would not fit at ATT. I would be happy if we could receive for 1 or 2 B level prospects in return. He is an average player that we are overpaying. Lots of people are in favor of trading Randy Winn, but I think Winn is a much better player than Rowand. This deal would  lighten our payroll to go after CC Sabathia. I think signing CC to 5 years 90-100 mil would be a great deal for the Giants. He would give us a slight home discount because he grew up around the bay. This would take pressure off Zito and would establish our rotation as the best in the bigs. My next signing would be Dallas McPherson. I would like to see the Giants sign him to a 2 year 3-6 million dollar deal. He's somewhat young and has plenty of pop. We have no solution at third next year, and I would much rather see the Giants sign McPherson over Crede/Aurilia. The last offseason deal I want to see is the trading of Big Money. He's slow, old, and blocking Pablo. We could probably get a solid prospect or two for Bengie because of his offensive numbers for a catcher. Pablo has proved he can hit at any level, and I disagree with moving him to 3b or 1b because that would decrease the value of his bat. I know we have Buster, but the worst case scenario is Buster is successful, and is ready for 2010. Fine. Then move Pablo to either 1b or 3b. These offseason deals would maintain our 80 million dollar payroll, but in my opinion, put a team on the field that could win 80-90 games.

Now, the 2009 Sf Giants:
1. ss-Emmanuel Buriss-Hopefully Burriss can have a solid first full season playing everyday and maintain a .270 average, a good OBP, and steal 30 bags.
2. Cf-Randy Winn-I think Winn will be much more effective out of the 2 hole rather than the 3 hole. Look for him to put up similar numbers to this year.
3. Lf-Fred Lewis-If Fred can be healthy all year, he could be scary. He could bat around .300 with 15-20 Hrs and 30 stolen bases. This 1-2-3 punch would give the Giants the quickest top of the order in baseball.
4. 3b.Dallas McPherson- He's got 40 bombs in the minors this year, so I would be satisfied is he hit around .250 with 20-25 Hrs. Expect a ton of K's.
5. C-Pablo Sandoval-I think he has proved that in a full major league season he can hit .300 with around 20 Hrs. The guy can flat out hit. We'll have to see.
6. Rf-Nate Schierholtz-Nate would definitely have his ups and downs next year if he had the opportunity to play everyday, which he deserves. I think he could hit around .270 with 15-20 Hrs. This would be huge for him, and he could really be a solid player in 2010.
7. 1b-Travis Ishikawa/Scott McClain-I have heard that TI really struggles with lefties, so if we had a good season going, have TI start against righties and McClain start againts lefties. If the season is lost, let TI play everyday so he can learn to hit the lefties.
8. 2b-Eugenio Velez-I think Velez could be a royal pain in the arse to a lot of teams in the 8 hole. He needs to work on his defense, but his eye is greatly improved since his last showing in the majors. I would expect Velez to hit around .240, steal around 30 bases and hit an occasional home run.
9. Pitcher

Starting Rotation-
1. CC Sabathia-CC would flat out dominate at ATT.
2. Tim Lincecum-Our second Cy Young Candidate
3. Matt Cain-Matt's breakout year where he wins 15 games and has a winning season.
4. Jonathan Sanchez-Sanchez improves, gets his ERA around 4.
5. Barry Zito-Zito feels better now that he is not making the most money on the team. Gets his ERA down to the low 4s.
6. If Lowry can return and be the Lowry of 2007, I would use a 6 man rotation to preserve our young arms, and have our pitchers be fresh for every start.

Bullpen
Closer-Brian Wilson
8th-Sergio Romo
Reliever-Alex Hinshaw
R-Jack Taschner
R- Kevin Correia
R-???

Bench:
UTL: Kevin Frandsen
UTL: Ivan Ochoa
Lf: Dave Roberts

If all these predictions were to come true, the 2009 Giants would probably win 100 games, but hey, a man can dream, right?

while i realize the Madbum and Tim 2.0 are both in the lower minors i just really can’t get on board with spending over 120 million dollars on another pitcher. That money would be better spent, in my mind, locking up caincecum long term or adding that ever elusive big bat. Lastly, get scott mcclain the hell away from the 09 Giants.

Scott McClain

your comments may have some feet for 09, but he would have been far better than Castillo. But I think it’s a little unfair to dismiss him outright based on his age. I don’t think he was ever given a fair chance to succeed at the major league level…or maybe this is just the writings on an old codger.

You think Eugenio is a better solution at second than Kevin Frandsen?

Frandsen was a MUCH better minor leaguer than Velez, has 100% more pop, and plays a better defensive 2nd. Velez could easily steal you thirty bases, but he may get picked off thirty times as well. The disheartening thing about Velez is that he simply hasn’t played like a big leaguer. He has made so many brainless decisions, that one must question whether he deserves this opportunity, he is electric at times, but falls short in so many categories.

If the Giants sign CC, I would believe they have to trade a pitcher. Lowry didn’t pitch this year so he wouldn’t net much in return. Nobody in the world will take Zito. That means either Sanchez or Cain would be on the block… hence the Cain for Fielder rumors and so forth.

I find it hard to believe the Marlins won’t re-sign McPhereson. Cantu and Uggla may very well be leaving… and for a tiny payroll team, they tied up Hanley long term.

The six man rotation is clownshoes… it makes no sense. If you had a Lincecum/CC combo, why would you want to make their starts less frequent. Wouldn’t that be playing against your advantages considering your 5-6 would be significantly less that your 1-2?

Scott McClain? Nice story, not a big leaguer. If at first you don’t succeed? No, he’s just not a big leaguer. If I hear another Jack Cust reference I’m going to break something. Jack Cust was 28, not 36.

As for Row v. Winn… Winn is FAR LESS EXPENSIVE, and possibly more valuable… all the more reason he is tradeable. If the youth movement is really on, that may mean sacrificing some older talent…

I hope we find out someday that Jeff Kent did steroids

Dallas McPherson?

A few things...

- McPherson played in a very hitter-friendly ballpark in the minors. Someone posted his major league equivalents for the season a couple months ago and they weren’t pretty at all. If the Giants were going to give him a chance, it should’ve been this season, not the next one.

- As well as Sandoval has done so far, he has not proved that he can hit .300 with 20 HRs in a full season. Small sample size is in effect here. I don’t doubt that he’ll be able to hit well in the majors, but thrusting him in the starter’s role at catcher isn’t the best idea.

- I hate to say it, but I have doubts that Lowry will go back to being a healthy and effective pitcher. I hope he can prove me wrong.

- If the Giants do land CC, I will be the first to buy his jersey, but the idea of having a big chunk of the payroll dedicated to two pitchers hurts my brain. Also, ERA ain’t everything

Define pretty.

Baseball Prospectus have his regular translated PCL numbers at an MLB equivalent of 260 EQA. 260 is league average, similar to how 100 OPS+ is league average.

You don’t think Sandoval as a starter is a good idea. In that event, which hotshot prospect would McPherson be blocking?

His zMLE’s:

2008 Albuquerque – .275/.379/.618

G	AB	R	H	2B	3B	HR	RBI	BB	K
127 448 94 123 22 3 42 98 76 168

2008 Translation – .194/.289/.393

G	AB	R	H	2B	3B	HR	RBI	BB	K
127 448 64 87 16 2 23 57 59 221

Minor League Splits has his line at a slightly more favorable:

.201/.313/.410

I think MLS doesn’t use PF and the zMLE’s are translating him to the Marlins park, so that could be some of the difference. Florida has a three year park factor of 0.96.

The league average 3B in the MLB has hit .266/.337/.439 this year in the majors. I don’t know how BP is translating him, but it seems optimistic to think he could hit league average.

You don’t think Sandoval as a starter is a good idea. In that event, which hotshot prospect would McPherson be blocking?

If you believe BPro's translation

I don’t see how it seems optimistic to think he can be average offensively.

So I guess it depends on whose translation you believe.

I assume that Sandoval would be starting at catcher where we have Bengie. If we start him at third, then I don’t really have a problem with it, but I don’t think some more time in the minors would hurt if we filled in that position with someone else.

response to Duike

I agree with the general outline of your plan, duikebuike (how does one pronounce that, by the way?).
1. Sabean and Bochy clearly need to go. I can wish for this, but I don’t expect it. Sabean has screwed up the roster so badly, it’ll be 2013 before we can get it back to normal – and that’s assuming he (or his successor) don’t make another stupid FA signing.

2. Lewis getting his foot fixed and the younger guys getting lots of PA’s is absolutely a must for the rest of this season.

3. Trading Aaron Rowand and keeping Randy Winn: I’d much prefer this, but again I just don’t see anyone else wanting Rowand at his current cost. It appears that even the Yankees are learning the value of young cheap prospects, so palming off over-priced vets on teams like the Yankees may be a thing of the past. Maybe if some now-dismal team were to suddenly contend next season, their ownership group (in a frenzy of unfamiliar success) might be persuaded by fan enthusiasm to trade for a savvy veteran like Rowand, IF they had just lost a corresponding OF to injury. I just see that as pretty unlikely. But I can hope.

4. Dallas MacPherson: his AAA numbers are very inflated by his home park. He’s good, and last year I would have swapped him for Pedro Feliz, but now I’m thinking maybe not so much (Mad About You reference ftw). I’d rather give Rohlinger or Sandoval or even Aurilia a shot at 3B next year. Ideally, Ryan would spend next year in Fresno and become our 3B in 2010. I just don’t see Conor Gillaspie being ready to start for us next season, but hey, I’d love to be proven wrong.

5. Signing Sabathia: I just can’t agree to it with the Albatross still on the roster (another reason Sabean should be fired). I’m with Natto on this one; the idea of two horribly expensive pitchers on a team this desperate for power hitters (and with the prospect of an uber-contract for Lincecum down the road) gives me the willies. (not McCovey or Mays).

6. Trading Bengie Molina. I can see it both ways on this subject. I truly believe he would be very valuable in tutoring Sandoval in the art of catching next year. And we’re only committed to Molina for 2009, so by 2010 either Posey or Sandoval (or even another cheap FA catcher) can take over. On the other hand, if Molina has perceived value around the majors, and we could trade him for an actual prospect, I would have to agree that Bengie won’t be part of the next good Giants team — and we could just go with Pablo at catcher next year. I understand that’s a big risk, asking Sandoval to be our regular catcher when he’s still kinda raw behind the plate. Depending on what we could get in return, I might take the gamble and trade Bengie. But, again, I think the attitude of most teams has shifted dramatically in the past 3-4 years, and teams are loathe to trade away young prospects. (This is something else Sabean didn’t see coming. And since he is the “vision guy” for the organization, I think that’s a fireable offense).

7. I have absolutely no faith in Eugenio Velez. I was a big supporter of Velez after he sparkled in the minors a few years ago – I wanted the team to promote to see how he handled the challenge, and I’m now convince that he isn’t the droid we’re looking for. Next spring, the competition for 2B should be between Kevin Frandsen and Travis Denker, and may the best man win. My money is on Frandsen, assuming he is fully recovered from his injury.

Again, I enjoyed reading your thoughts, and agree with most of what you said.

I've come to the conclusion that the two most important things in life are good friends and a good bullpen. - Bob Lemon, 1981

I think the smartest thing to do is let Bengie Molina play till midseason next year, then let the idea of trading him come out.
In that time, the Giants should give Sandoval the kind of time he’s already getting (3B; 1B; C) and evaluate his first half to see if it’s worth putting him as the every day starter.
This I feel, is what the Giants will likely do.

If I counted right

You’ve got a 27-person active roster in your scenario. No one’s going to do a 6-man rotation, especially the Giants, who are not exactly the most innovative team in the league. McPherson is no lock to be better than options that we have (Frandsen, Sandoval, McClain), so why waste resources on him at all?

BTW, the CC talk has got to stop. There’s just no way.

I had no idea

that Richie was our opening day third baseman and first baseman. The throws from third to first must have been a bitch.

CC? I agree with some previous posts; let’s just leave that whole subject alone.

Velez? Once again I agree with some of the previous thoughts, and I too have no confidence with him in the field. Offensively he isn’t as bad, but he still makes mental errors on the base paths. Defensively he is a brain cramp waiting to happen.

And finally I think the youth movement is fine except that you do not want an entire team of under 25 year-olds. The best teams have a mix of a few 30+ veterans, a core of players in their peak years, and a few of the young players making up the rest . There seems to be a belief among some Cove contributers that anyone over 30 should be gotten rid of. The geriatric Giants of recent years are an example of something to avoid, but we shouldn’t compensate and think that a bunch of kids with little or no experience are going to be fun to watch let alone competitive.
