Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

minor lines, 9/6/08

AAA: Fresno finished its season on Monday

AA: Connecticut finished its season on Monday

A+: San Jose defeated Stockton 5-3
(rallying for four runs in the 8th inning in the first game of the Northern Division championoship series)

San Jose: LF Bobby Felmy: 1 for 3, 2 BB, 2 SO, CS
San Jose: C Buster Posey: 1 for 3, BB, SO
San Jose: 1B Brett Pill: 3 for 3, 2B, SF, PO
San Jose: RF Tyler Graham: 2 for 4, SB
Stockton: C Josh Donaldson: 1 for 3, HR, 2 BB
Stockton: CF Corey Brown: 0 for 4, 3 SO

San Jose: RHP Tim Alderson: 6.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 9 K--2 HR
San Jose: RHP Steven Edlefsen: 1.0+ IP, 3 BB
San Jose: RHP Mike Musgrave: 1.0 IP, 1 BB, 1 K
San Jose: RHP Danny Otero: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 K

Pill led the Giants' offense with three of their ten hits, including their only XBH.  Graham was the only other Giant with multiple hits.  His second hit scored the tying and go-ahead runs.  Felmy, batting leadoff for the first time that I can recall, reached base three times.  Posey reached base twice in his full-season debut, before being lifted for a pinch runner in the 8th inning.  For the A's affiliate, the 22-year-old Donaldson reached base three times and connected for his second post-season HR.

Alderson, who had allowed just 4 HRs in his pro career, allowed a couple solo HRs.  He allowed a fair number of baserunners, but otherwise allowed just one more run to score, in part due to a career-high 9 K.   Edlefsen and Musgrave combined for a scoreless 7th and 8th inning, despite Edlefsen walking both batters he faced in the 8th inning.  Otero faced the minimum three batters in the 9th inning to record the save.

A-: Augusta had an off-day, having swept its first playoff series
(They will face West Virginia, who defeated Lake County 4-1 in their game 3.)

Notable line:
West Virginia: RF Caleb Gindl: 0 for 2, BB, HBP, IBB, 2 SO

The barely 20-year-old Gindl, who was considered among the Brewers' top ten prospects entering this season, didn't have a hit in this game, but still reached base twice and finished the three-game series with a .500 AVG.  For the season, he hit .307/.388/.474 in 508 AB.

ssA: Salem-Keizer lost to Spokane 11-10
(despite leading 10-2 after five innings and so falling behind 2-1 in the best-of-five series)

Salem-Keizer: DH Wladimir Frias: 2 for 4, 2B, BB, SF, SO
Salem-Keizer: 2B Ryan Lormand: 3 for 6, 2B, E
Salem-Keizer: 1B Mike Loberg: 3 for 5, HR, SO
Salem-Keizer: RF Dan Cook: 2 for 5, HR, 2B, 2 SO

Salem-Keizer: LHP Ari Ronick: 5.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 6 K--1 HR
Salem-Keizer: LHP Dan Runzler: 1.0 IP, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K--1 WP
Salem-Keizer: RHP Edwin Quirarte: 1.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K--1 WP

Loberg and Cook both homered for the Volcanoes.  Loberg, Frias and Lormand reached base three times each.  They each have an AVG of .400 or better through the first three games of the series.

Ronick allowed a couple runs in the 1st inning but just two walks in the next four innings.  The Volcanoes bullpen had a poor night with 10 BB and 9 R in 4.0 IP.  Among five Volcanoes relievers, Runzler and Quirarte were the only ones not charged with an earned run, but they did allow all five runners they inherited to score.

R: Giants won the AZL championship on Sunday

DSL: Giants lost in the championship series on Friday

I’m not so sure about that. Alderson is in a higher league and it’s a hitter’s league as well. It’s pretty telling that a “bad” outing for Alderson is a quality start in which he K’s 9 in 6 innings.

It was a joke

I think

..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

Ok. I actually thought it was a great outing by Alderson. He made a couple of mistakes, but overall he was pretty dominant.

Great eighth inning rally by San Jose. Who did Stockton bring in to pitch the eighth?? Did we loan them Tyler Walker or Jack Taschner??

are the Giants changing their AA affiliate next year?? I’m really hoping they stay in Connecticut, because I’m not far from there. I’d love to see them stay and for players like Alderson, Bumgarner and AnVil to perhaps be there next year.

Look

for Villalona to be in San Jose. I think he needs it.

I expect that too. If he does well there, he could possibly go straight to Fresno. Going to Dodd might be bad for his confidence, although it certainly didn’t bother Pablo.

seems unlikely they’ll be in Norwich next year. Both the defenders and the giants are reportedly unhappy with the city, and their will be some openings in other areas; we’ll see.

I hope the series goes to 5 games so I can get to one.

Was at the San Jose Game to get my first look at Posey...

At the plate he looked pretty good. Looks to be a disciplined hitter, didn’t chase anything. Though the strikeout sucks, he swung at everything he should have and laid off the junk. Also looks like an aggresive hitter. His first AB he swung on the first pitch and put it to the warning track. His hit in the eight was also the first pitch. My dad and I had noticed a big gap the batter before (first base and second base both holding runners close) and commented that the ball should go that way. Posey saw it and put a sharp grounder right through it. The hit plated two RBI’s and he was pulled for the runner.

Behind the plate it was hard to tell. Obviously he’s taking calls from Decker in the dugout (doesn’t know the pitchers or the hitters in the league). He had quite a few balls pop out of his glove (enough to notice), gunned a runner at second and took a foul ball right in the mask in the 7th (scary).

Overall, it was a good showing by him. I hope that I can catch one or two more in San Jose. If not, I should be able to catch him in San Francisco next week when he gets called up.

Sabean says that Posey won’t be called up.

Sabean also sounded duly impressed after watching catcher Buster Posey play Saturday night with Class A San Jose in a California League playoff game. It was Sabean’s first opportunity to see Posey perform in the flesh since the Giants selected him fifth overall in June’s First-Year Player Draft.

“He was as advertised,” Sabean said. “He caught and threw exceptionally well, threw a runner out easily, blocked the ball, caught third strikes.” Sabean added that Posey demonstrated power, discipline and plate coverage while going 1-for-4 with an RBI single.

But Sabean said that the Giants won’t summon Posey to the Majors, as they have done with third baseman Conor Gillaspie, their sandwich pick in this year’s Draft.

“We’ve already got that position spoken for, at least for this year,” Sabean said. “It would be counterproductive for the people here, not for him. He might have good experience here, but with Bengie [Molina], [Pablo] Sandoval and [Steve] Holm, there’s no reason to experiment. We need to experiment more at third base.”

I thought experimenting at third base was something you did in college…

I was under the impression that Decker called pitches for everyone in SJ. Is that not the case?

Billy Hayes: His job is better than yours.

Just before he was traded I saw Sandoval call most of a game on his own. It probably depends on the catchers familiarity with the league.
