3 Year Plan to Dynasty
This Offseason
- Sign Rafael Furcal to a 2 year deal for more than the dodgers are offering.
- Trade Randy Winn for the best prospect offer we can get.
Next Year
- Play Frandsen at 3rd with Burris/Velez/Ochoa/Denker splitting time at 2b. All 5 will compete for the 2010 2B position.
- Have Sandoval Split time between Catcher and 1B.
- In September, Call up Gillaspie (again), Posey, and either Alderson (Who is further along than Bumgarner due to his developed off speed pitches)
- Draft Grant Green with our Top 5 Pick. He is a really good defensive shortstop with a big time bat. He is pretty seasoned, and should be in the majors by 2011
2010 Lineup
SS Furcal
3B Gillaspie
C Posey
1B Sandoval
RF Shierholtz
CF Rowand
LF Lewis
2B Winner of Frandsen/Velez/Burriss/Ochoa/Denker
Rotation: Lincecum, Cain, Sanchez, Alderson, Zito
With that Lineup and Rotation, I think that we could make a serious run at the division title in 2010. After the 2010 season, Villalona, Noonan, Green, and Bumgarner will all be ready to make their major league arrivals, completing our dynasty. Furcal will be off the books, and Zito will only have a few years left on his deal. We could very likely deal him at that point if we offered to pay half his salary. That should free up plenty of money to lock up our young talent, and have a dynasty for years. Once Villalona arrives we could either use Sandoval as an ultra platoon player, or trade him for an upgrade in the outfield.

Next year improve by 10 or so wins with the development of our youngins + furcal. In 2010, we should be a plus .500 team with that roster. Once Bumgarner, Villalona, Noonan, and Green make the big leagues we should be talented enough to compete for it all. All our position and rotation spots will be filled with good young players. And we will have plenty of cash to keep all of that talent.

10 wins of improvement in 09?
Which youngsters are we talking about here? The Giants are already 3 games over their pythag and still are at 20 under .500.

Wait...
Is this Brian Sabean’s secret rationale for the Gillaspie move? Me no like propaganda, and how do you split a position four ways again? Oh wait, we’ve done that with our entire infield this year.
Sigh.

Start all 5 2B and forget about 1B, SS, 3B, and RF. It could work against a weak lefthanded hitter

3-Year Plan to Dynasty
1) Sign over-valued shortstop to long-term, high value contract.
2) Trade Randy Winn for anything, regardless.
3) Let five sub-prospects duke it out for two spots in 2010, giving us two below average players in 2010.
4) Give Sandoval – legit hitting prospect – 450+ at bats to see what you have with him.
5) Draft weak hitting player designed to make our shiny new long-term, overvalued shortstop a long term, overvalued redundancy.
6) Dynasty?
Only the Sandoval thing makes a lot of sense to me there.

Good job reading
1. How is a 2 year deal considered long term? Furcal is a stop gap, but one that we desperately need. We need at least one of our middle infielders to have a presence in the lineup. We can’t afford to bury them both as the 7 and 8 hitters.
2. I never said trade Winn for anything regardless. I’d prefer to open the spot up for shierholtz full time, but i wouldn’t necessarily mind keeping Winn to backup all 3 OF spots and collecting a comp pick when someone signs him in 2010.
3. Those 5 sub-prospects would be duking it out for 1 spot in the 2010 lineup. Quickly to be replaced by Noonan the next year.
4. Yes
5. Like the other poster said, Green is by no means a weak hitting SS. I can definitely see him putting up 2007 Tulowitski type numbers with better defense. In addition, Furcal is off the books the year he would be ready to take on the starting job, leaving no redundancy whatsoever.
6. Yes
2B Noonan
3B Gillaspie
C Posey
1B Villalona
SS Green
RF Shierholtz
CF Rowand
LF Lewis
Insurance/Trade Bait to improve outfield: Sandoval
Rotation: Lincecum, Bumgarner, Cain, Sanchez, Alderson
Bullpen: Wilson, Hinshaw, Sosa, Valdez, Other young arms we have brewing.
That team is prepped to be really good for a really long time. The outfield could certainly be improved, but we would have Rafael Rodriguez and potentially Fairley ready not too long afterwards.

1) Furcal isn’t going anywhere for a two year contract.
2) You said “trade Winn for the best prospect we can.” If the best prospect we can sucks, it’s still falling under that. I chose my words poorly, but I didn’t misread you.
3) I said two spots because I was including Frandsen, who you have playing third. That was bad semantics on my part, though I think Frandsen is destined, if anywhere, for middle infield, and I don’t think that any of those five are really worth standing pat on just for the sake of letting them duke it out.
4) Cool
5) I was corrected about Green, and like I said, I’m not sure why I said that in the first place. But, considering my response to #1 here, I still think the furcal redundancy stands. Granted, it’s bad semantics on my part again. My bad.
6) Cool.
7) Your future lineup involves no fewer than 7 system position players who have none of them played their rookie seasons (unless I’ve got Nate wrong, which I might) not only working out, but also excelling. That would involve a remarkable amount of good luck. Great building plans don’t generally depend so heavily on luck, not as a rule.
But you’re right, sort of. It’s not that I was reading you poorly, though. I was just failing to cover myself very well (or, at all). I wasn’t playing by the rules of your scenario, which I suppose was my problem here.
And I was clearly just outright inaccurate about Green.
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

Possible but unrealistic
You’re counting on the Giants’ prospects just to roll right through the system and then produce greatly at a level unrealistic for rookies or very young players. Not to mention also the possibility on some of them not panning out or getting injured.

I understand your thinking
I mean, we are the giants. Freddy Lewis is our farm’s greatest accomplishment. That being said, two of these guys we’re counting on (Green and Posey) are seasoned College players and top 5 picks. There is a pretty high success rate among those types of players.
Noonan and Villalona are the two farthest away and thus candidates for failure, but we have options at the major league level at those positions as well. Lastly, we will have a ton of money available. Once 2010 hits, we can start to supplement our young talent with some quality FA signings.
I really like to look at the Rays as an example. If you look at their lineup, they don’t appear to be world beaters. However, Pitching, Defense, and Chemistry has led to their success this year.

Sigh
Bangs head against desk, muttering something barely audible…sounds something like, “Furcal? Fural? What is this obsession?”
Furcal when healthy = Rich Aurilia’s average career numbers. At $10 – $15 million for 3 or 4 years? No thanks. Plus, what’s the point if he’s just a stopgap? Use the money to tie up the young pitching long-term or sign your high draft picks. Even better, use the money for a FA that will actually make a difference.
Other than Furcal, you don’t have a whole lot of stupid points. I applaud you for doing what most of the ridiculous “We’ll be awezome in 2 yrz!!1” posters — and that is defending yourself with at least some sense of logic. However, I would say that that team will contend, not become a dynasty. It would take every one of their prospects to become better than average at their positions and perfect health to suggest the possibility of a dynasty. I don’t see that happening.
Oh, and Pablito needs to be playing full-time, whether it be C, 1B, or 3B.

I’m with you on this issue. The mock trades/mock FA scenario posts are tiresome but this collective boner for Furcal makes zero sense, for the reasons you and several others have pointed out; the injury risk, the inflated cost, the lack of value for said cost. I could do without seeing another HAY LETZ GET FURCAL GUYZ post. I could do very well without seeing another one of those.

I don’t want to sign him, but saying that Furcal = Rich Aurilia is silly talk. Furcal is a slightly better hitter, a much better base runner, and plays better defense – which is very important at SS.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.
by Cookyman on Sep 9, 2008 7:48 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
starting the work day, so don't have much time
but look up Furcal’s career averages. They are about even with Aurilia’s career averages. Yeah, Furcal’s faster and maybe a better defender (not sure, haven’t checked the stats but don’t ever remember Aurilia being brutal or anything), but hitting-wise, yeah, they’re about the same, if not Furcal being worse.
