Gillaspie Promoted to Majors!!!?

sfgiants.com is reporting that the Giants have purchased the contract of Conor Gillaspie and he will join the big team.

Sabean says he is one of the "most advanced bats" in the draft and the organization needs to see what they have. Apparently, this will make Gillaspie the quickest Giant in history to progress from draft pick to the big roster.

Is this too quick? Are we excited? Or does this smack of the last moves of a desperate regime?

He’s only been in the minors for what like 20 games? Isn’t scouting your own players while they’re in the minors and getting opinions from your directors/coaches ample enough? But rushing him to the majors to get a few AB’s in September against shitty teams that aren’t even in contention makes NO SENSE.

Well, it seems as though the Giants feel as though Gillespe can handle the pressure. As positive said above, it does make since to take a quick look at him. Other than starting his service clock early, I don’t see any harm in this provided Gillespe can handle the callup.

the service time doesn’t bother me so much. The Giants’ have the resources to sign Gillispe if they want.

If his bat is that advanced, then perhaps he be one of the rare ones who can make this jump.

by tyrannoman on Sep 6, 2008 8:41 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Because the bat isn’t that advanced. He was a decent college bat. By no stretch of the imagination was he considered in a league with the class hitters of the draft like Alvarez, or Alonso or even Smoak or Wallace (who’s having a great debut — advancing as far as AA). Nor has Conor done much to change that view with his relatively underwhelming pro debut as he transitions to the wood bat and pro game. It’s a move that’s hardly tragic but that makes no real baseball sense and for me, is another straw on the large stack that suggests there’s no plan of any kind at work here.

I do

They could have taken a look at him at SK. It makes no sense to rush him up past virtually EVERY level of the minor leagues. I don’t care how advanced he was.

It might make sense had this been Posey because he’s such an advanced bat. As much as I like Gillaspie, he’s not THAT good at this point in time to be rushed up to the ML’s. And a few AB’s isn’t going to help us know if he’s ready or not. He’s not going to get enough time to show otherwise. This move is absolutely pointless, if anything other then to bring fans to the yard.

by Hobbes2d on Sep 6, 2008 6:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Except most people don;t know or care who Gillaspie is. Quick callups don’t put asses in seats.

I don't know what contract rules are..

Does bringing him up right now subtract from the time that we have control over him? If he can stick a little bit, all the better.. otherwise, if calling him up in September doesn’t reduce the time we can control him, he can return to a regular track in the minors with no harm done except a few more ABs.. in the Majors

I only have a signature because I recognize everyone else by their sigs, not their usernames..

by lmaozedong on Sep 6, 2008 6:23 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Sure, they’ve now put him on the 40 man, which means his options clock is ticking. He’ll be out options much sooner now than if they’d let him get a couple of years of development in. If he’s not ready to be a 25 man player out of ST in, what, 2011 or 2012?, then they have to expose him to waivers at that point.

Get the hell out the way Bengie, Pablito's hit the show!

by Roger on Sep 6, 2008 7:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not A Big Deal In My Opinion

This transaction does not (repeat does not) count as an Option Year as he will not be optioned down to the minors this year. All this means is that we can only stash him in the minors on options from 2009 thru 2011 and have to either place him permanently in the majors in 2012 or waive him and thus risk losing him.

Do any of you so upset with this really think we are going to still want him if he ain’t major league ready by 2012?

by giantsrainman on Sep 6, 2008 10:30 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually, because Gillaspie was added to the 40-man roster so quickly in his pro career, he will have four, not three, option-years. Kevin Correia and Jonathan Sanchez are two other recent Giants who had four option-years because of how early they made their major league debuts, although I don’t think that a fourth option-year was ever used on Correia and has certainly not been used on Sanchez yet.

Thanks For The Correction

So I now ask, do any of you so upset with this really think we are going to still want him if he ain’t major league ready by 2013?

by giantsrainman on Sep 6, 2008 10:41 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

WHy wouldn't we

four years is a fairly typical development track for lots and lots of major league starters, including several of our own — Fred Lewis had a 6 year trek through the minors, Bengie Molina, 7 years, Aaron Rowand came up after the All Star break in his 4th year (and was back down for a while in his 5th), Omar Vizquel reached the majors in his 6th pro year, but spent much of his 7th back down, Ray Durham came to the majors at the beginning of his 4th year, Pablo Sandoval is now at the end of his 5th.

Evan Longoria made it up here after opening day of his 3rd year and his was an extraordinarily advanced curve. Why would we just want to throw away a decent investment if he happens to be advance ordinarily?

Get the hell out the way Bengie, Pablito's hit the show!

Thanks, steve. That extra year makes a big difference.

by Dan from NM on Sep 6, 2008 10:53 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, that’s the point. Having to keep him in the majors when he’s 24 reduces the team’s flexibility. Maybe it won’t be a big deal, but it certainly could be, depending on the composition of the roster at that point and Gillaspie’s performance.

by Dan from NM on Sep 6, 2008 10:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It does contribute to the 40-man roster logjam, though.

I’m not so concerned about the option clock (3 years should be enough for a college hitter, if he’s worth keeping). The major issue I have is that it’s just bad business to have propects learn on the job in the majors. Ideally, you want a player to get as much out of the minors as possible, so that you get the most out of him during his 6 free agency years. You don’t want to trade a player’s age 28 and 29 seasons for his age 22 and 23 seasons unless that guy really has nothing more to learn in the minors. You don’t want to give up a couple years of a guy’s physical peak in exchange for a couple years of him struggling to keep his head above water as he learns things he could have figured out in AA/AAA.

Of course, this only really comes into play if the Giants have him on the team out of Spring next year. This quick call does set a rather unfortunate precedent, though. I wonder how many draftees will ask for it next year.

why...

is this a big deal? If Gillaspie’s psyche is so delicate that he cannot handle initial failure in the ML than he has no future in baseball anyways. Now if the Giants plan to base roster decisions of this impending cup of coffee than its fundamentally stupid.

The Compelling Reason

Is to find out if he is ready to be the answer at 3B starting in 2009. If he isn’t I think we can read this to mean that the Giants will go after a veteran 3B in free agency or by trade for 2009.

by giantsrainman on Sep 6, 2008 10:44 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's not a very compelling reason, frankly.

The answer is almost certainly a resounding “no,” and a couple dozen September ABs shouldn’t be enough to change that.

Two issues

1) He’ll start burning options next season. Meaning that he has to finish developing in three years.

2) Suppose he does turn out to be a good player. By advancing him so quickly, the Giants are trading a year or two from the prime of his career for a year or two at the beginning of his career. Years in which he probably won’t be as good, seeing as he’ll be trying to learn alot of things at the major league level that he would have otherwise learned in the minors w/o advancing towards arbitration and free agency. .

Recap of game: SJ won after being down 3-1 for most of the game. Alderson wasn’t as sharp this game (he gave up 2 HRs and walked a couple). Posey went 1-3 with a BB and RBI, and he had the single in the bottom of the 8th that made the score 3-2.

by hitme on Sep 6, 2008 10:04 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I bet it was a handshake deal to call him up when he signed for slot money. At the time, Gillaspie made some reference to how he’d been holding out and got some incentives that would become clear later. Something like that. I can’t find a link — that’s off memory.

I don’t know the ins and outs of options, but I’m pretty sure the early call-up means he’ll run out of ’em sooner.

Is he ready? Probably not, but if he is, only the scouts would know. He certainly hasn’t accumulated enough of a statistical record to say.

Rotoworld's take on it
More foolishness from a Giants team with no concern about maximizing its chances of putting its best team on the field when it could possibly have a chance of contending. Gillaspie was a great pick with the 37th overall selection in this year’s draft, and he has a chance to be a nice long-term third baseman. However, adding him to the 40-man roster now is the height of foolishness. The team is up to 13 infielders on the 40-man roster (including Kevin Frandsen on the 60-day DL), 10 of whom are 26 or younger. That’s a whole bunch of spots already spoken for next year, and the Giants are going to have a tough time improving their current roster without jettisoning young players to do it.

I think they consider the move to be foolishness.

They're right, though

The Giants are going to have some serious 40-man roster problems going forward. MLB roster rules just aren’t designed for a “throw the crap against the wall and see what sticks” approach.

I don’t know if it is as bad as all that (the roster problem). Of the 13 infielders, only a few aren’t dispensable, and I don’t think adding him will threaten that much as far the roster issues go.

I don’t think anyone will want to jump all over the Giants’ prospects anytime soon. I’m pretty sure Bocock can be outrighted today, and he will still be in the Giants’ organization.

Also, depending on any free agents we sign, you’ll have a few guys coming off in the offseason if they aren’t re-signed. Aurilia, Vizquel, Yabu, Walker, etc. Added to the lots of weak prospects (McClain, Bocock, etc) i don’t think it’ll be too much of an issue. Of course some guys will have to be protected from the Rule V draft, but from from the list of players i recall seeing, there aren’t many that’d be picked up in it.

why not promote next year’s first round draft pick to the majors now? That way you won’t have to worry about that pesky draft thingee, and since you can promisepromisepromise who you’re going to draft, you can just get that out of the way now?

Strange..

What could we possibly learn about him in the handful of games left this season? That he can’t hit big league pitching? Does anyone remember a position player who made this quick of a jump to the majors and had success?

by baybruin415 on Sep 7, 2008 12:51 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

“Does anyone remember a position player who made this quick of a jump to the majors and had success?”

A couple off the top of my head: Dave Winfield was drafted in 1973, signed right away, and played regularly the rest of that same season in the majors, never spending a day the minors. Pete Incaviglia was drafted in 1985 and was in the Rangers opening day lineup in 1986, skipping the minors entirely. But both were taken at the top of the draft — Winfield 4th overall, Incaviglia 8th.

A couple close calls: Will Clark and Robin Yount each played just 60-something games in the minors the year they were drafted, then made the opening day lineup the next year — and Yount was drafted as a 17 year-old high school kid (the same year as Winfield). But Clark was a #2 overall pick, and Yount was a #3, so again — cream of the crop.

This type of thing used to happen more frequently in the past, but I’m pretty sure even then it only happened to the very best of prospects.

I htink it’s actually going to start happening sooner, with richer teams. If the Yankees, or Mets find someone in the draft that can help them right away (college closers, especially) it wouldn’t surprise me to see them in the bigs ASAP. they don’t ever have to worry about service time or arbitration clocks, becuase they’ll just fork over the $$.

The KC’s, Oaklands, and Cleveland types can’t afford to take this approach, however, because they are forced by the $$ to make sure every season in the bigs is productive.

by tyrannoman on Sep 8, 2008 6:54 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Besides Winfield,

John Olerud, Bob Feller, Al Kaline, and Bob Horner all skipped the minors entirely. I am not sure about Kirk Gibson, I think he skipped the minors, but I could be wrong about him.

Robin Ventura too.

by SF Pete on Sep 8, 2008 11:38 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gibby played the half season after being drafted at A ball and most of the his first full season in AAA before coming up. All told he spent about 150 games in the minors. Ventura’s another close one, he played 130 games in AA his first season and then came up in September.

Not sure that Kaline and Feller are good comps as the eras are so dissimilar. In fact, Kaline was one of a pretty substantial group of players who were forced by rule to come straight to the majors — the so called Bonus Baby rule in play from ’47 to ’65. There were quite a few of those (players who were signed to Bonuses of more than 40k had to spend two years with the major league club or else that organization would lose the rights to them) but only Kaline, Koufax, and Killebrew really turned out to have much of a career. Feller definitely stipulated a straight shot to the majors as his condition for signing with Cleveland.

And the story has it that Mel Ott was brought straight to the majors as a 17 year old, because John McGraw was worried that a minor league coach would try to make him change his unorthodox swing. He mostly sat on the bench his first year then played very sparingly as an 18 year old, before McGraw stuck him in the lineup for good at 20.

My thoughts.

I wanted to take some time and reflect on this decision, as opposed to reacting kneejerk. Like Hobbes2d, I often find myself backing Sabean against his usual detractors (most of whom I think to be a medley of half-wit sycophants, and overeager ignoramuses with a keyboard), however I don’t think I can so here. My initial reaction of WTF has cooled a bit, but I still think the move is unwise.

I don’t care about the option year (if he wasn’t MLB for good after 3 years, it is unlikely he ever would be good). The issue seems to be a) whether he is ready, and b) the giants dire need at 3b.

a)
whether he is ready. I haven’t seen him play at SKA or AZ, but his stats there aren’t overpowering. The stats, as they are, do not mean he isn’t ready, but they aren’t exactly screaming it either. But maybe he is—at least ready enough than he could benefit from playing at the level a bit, and seeing MLB pitching. And by the way, this latter point could be important, as some things might be shown that he needs work on that wouldn’t appear in the minors. So maybe he is, maybe he isn’t; we’ll see—I’m hardly going to contradict scouts who have seen him play recently on this point, when I haven’t.

a.1)
I don’t think it is very likely this will hurt his development, if indeed he struggles. The brought up too soon and ruin the prospect fear is more of a concern with unpolished players, and from all reports Gillaspie is quite polished. It seems reasonable to infer from reports that he is essentially on the aa/aaa level, as far as refinement goes, and should he struggle, he should be able to adjust, and work on the issues on the minors, instead of imploding. If he does implode on the basis of that, well he wasn’t ever going to be anything anyway. But it could still could happen, and he could be screwed up by this, and this is the problem with the ‘throwing shit at the wall’ phrase, as this is a good prospect, not shit. It’s a gamble….a gamble in which the giants are not likely to lose big, but its still could happen.

b)
team need. No doubt the need at 3b is severe (and I’m still hoping they try sandoval out there more). But is it likely he’s ready for MLB 3b? It is possible he could be…but very, very unlikely. However, he really might be as a mid-season callup next season, and the giants might be seeing if he could be that. If so, they’d want him to get a jump on adjusting to the MLB, and work on the things he needs to adjust on during the fall and winter. In this case, they’d stopgap third until then instead of getting a FA.

b.1)
as long as it doesn’t hurt his development, I like this idea better than trading too much for beltre, or buying bad back crede. It doesn’t seem Beltre is as cheaply available as he should be (and who knows what the interim seattle GM is up to anyway), but the current price for him seems to be Sanchez, and that’s crazy high— so for now, Beltre doesn’t seen a reasonable option.
b.2)
What is the club thinking about frandsen (2B? or splitting time at 3B with sandoval with velez at 2B? Or the consider him a big unknown because of the injury?)
b.3)
If they are trying to get Gillaspie for an earlyish midseason call up next year (presumably to stick)—as speculated above—that isn’t much of a gain on if they just pushed this process back a bit, calling him up earlier next year, sending him back down if he struggles, and have him on track to get back sept. ish. And that latter scenario has a lessened chance of ‘bring him up to early and ruining the prospect’ scenario happening, though, once again, there isn’t a very high risk of that even in the call up now, prep for early midseason call (or straight to MLB if he’s good in the spring). But there is enough risk that doing it all next season makes more sense than bringing him up now.

Related to the possibility of this being in Gillaspie’s contract, but slightly different: Gillaspie wasn’t signed to a professional contract, but now he has one. The signals are clear

1) There’s not going to be a 3b F/A signing.

2) Sandoval probably won’t see significant time at 3b in 2009.

3) There may be concerns about Frandsen’s recovery.

Bringing CG up now gets the “gee whiz” out of the way. If he’s doing well in AA/AAA next season and Frandsen stumbles, they want CG up and productive right away.

Check your signals

1) I would say Sabean is doing this to see if he needs to make a trade or sign a FA for 3B.

2) I love Pablo and hope he gets plenty of ABs, but I don’t see him as the future at 3B.

3) I don’t think this means anything in regards to Frandsen. He was intended as only a stopgap at 3B for 2008. He is definitely not any kind of long term solution there. He might turn into an MLB average 2B, but he would need to develop a lot more power for 3B.

Other players have may big jumps or skipped the minors completely. This might be the time to not take the ultra-conservative route, and see what we have for 3B in Gilaspie.

Greetings, Marklar! I am Marklar! This is Marklar.

I especially agree with your first point. It might be a case where they see CG as a guy who’s ceiling isn’t off the charts, but a guy who’s close to that ceiling and close to being MLB ready. By letting Sabean, Bochy, Lansford, Wotus, Kelly, Flannery, et all watch him in games, BP, taking grounders etc, they might be able to chime in with an estimate of how far away he is from being an everyday 3B. Knowing that would help with any FA scenarios. (i.e. Don’t sign Crede to a four-year deal if you think Dizzy is just a year or two away.)

Why not see what we’ve got? I know there are issues beyond my comprehension in regards to FA years and contractual loopholes but this season’s going nowhere and we have question marks at third and second. Let the kid have his cup of cofee, log 30+ ABs and then we at least have a gauge. Worst case scenario: he bats .100 and we send him back down for more seasoning. Best case scenario: he’s the next Evan Longoria.

Neil Young gets the nod over Celine ?

When Canada is dead and gone, there’ll be no more Celine Dion!

Like maple syrup, Canada’s evil oozes over the United States.

The Canadians. They walk among us. William Shatner. Michael J. Fox. Monty Hall. Mike Meyers. Alex Trebek. All of them Canadians. All of them here.

These Canadians suffer from a serious inferiority complex. That’s why they built this: The Canadian National Tower! World’s largest free-standing structure! It is the height of six American football fields, or five Canadian football fields. As if Canadian football really counts.

Think of your children pledging allegiance to the maple leaf. Mayonnaise on everything. Winter 11 months of the year. Anne Murray – all day, every day.

Yeah and they have the WGA (World Canadian Bureau). You want to answer to them? Eh?

Baggs has today's lineup...

…and once again Gillaspie is on the bench, with Aurilia getting the start at third today. WTF is the point of bringing him up and then not playing him? They want to evaluate his benchwarming skills up close?

Like Barry Zito, I'm mildly half-OK.

His ass sitting abilities are very polished for his age. Should move fast through the system.

Yeah, with their saying that, but also saying they don’t expect to play him much, it is almost certainly a contract obligation.

Adoptive Parent of Francisco Peguero. He can throw, he can run, he can hit(fastballs), and he's Dominican. What else do you need to know?

Take it for what it’s worth, but Krukow was saying the Giants’ MLB coaches are looking at him pregame a lot, to see if his defense wuuld be good enough for him to be in the mix for next year.

That being said, I do think this is a handshake deal that got CG signed.
