Never thought I would be happy about a Dodger Homerun
Webb just gave up a 3 run bomb to Manny Ramirez, this broke up a 0-0 tie and just could keep Lincecum in the Cy Race.

It’s definitely a good news/bad news scenario.

Lincecum leads Webb in ERA by 0.81. I think the discussion should end there on who the better pitcher is.
by kingofthacove on Sep 6, 2008 3:04 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Lincecum also has like 50 more strike outs.

Webb is more of a groundball pitcher though.

so then give his a defense an award for recording his outs. Screw his wins. And i still contend that they should subtract any stats he’s compiled while facing the Giants…Tim’s NEVER had that advantage.
/btw i’m not this myopic, i’m just biased because i really really want to see Tim get the Cy.

Benitez once led the Giants in ERA, by far. He was clearly our best pitcher at the time.

That’s not really true. I assume you mean 2006, when his ERA was 3.52. Mike Staton and Kevin Correia both had better ERAs than Benitez that year (3.09, 3.49) and Schmidt and Kline weren’t far behind.

Wasn’t he our ERA leader in April of last year when he would only allow inherited runners to score?

Ah, if howie meant he lead the team in ERA at some point in the midst of a season that may, of course, be the case. I assumed he meant for a season.

Because relievers and starters are totally judged under the same criteria.
ERA is much more useful in determining a starter’s value than a reliever’s.
by kingofthacove on Sep 6, 2008 5:48 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree ERA has more value for starter than a reliever
But that doesn’t make it a useful catch-all stat.
I was being slightly hyperbolic for the sake of saying that NO discussion of a pitcher’s worth should start and end with ERA. Even among starters, it’s fairly prone to being affected by a number of weird things. Lowry and his 1/1 K/BB ratio and ridiculously unsustainable percentage of runners not allowed to score comes to mind immediately as an example of a pitcher who didn’t deserve his ERA over the course of an individual season.
Hell, by ERA alone, 2007 Lowry is pretty darn close to 2008 Cain. Maybe that’s a less hyperbolic way of driving my point home.

I think 3 more wins
and continuing to lead ERA and Ks and Timmy will wrap it up.

i think webb has more leeway
just a single win completely changes the way his season is perceived. CC is starting to get a lot of media play. wouldn’t it be totally giant-like to come in 2nd in the CY to a guy that pitches 15 games.

He wont win with 8 losses to Lincecum’s 4 and Sabathia’s 1, thats one more bad start for Webb.

Two stats that could mean something
Lincecum: ERA+ 165, WHIP 1.18
Webb: ERA+ 133, WHIP 1.19
Granted, I doubt the voters are looking at these as much as wins, ERA and team performance, three of the stats that by most accounts should matter less when talking about an award for individual performance.

its sems like Timmy has lowered his WHIP by like .1 in the past month or so. That makes a difference in voting I thinks.
Castillo got the DFA. Guestimate for Castillo DFA to come before the 2009 season = 2.
