49ers regular season kickoff upon us

Hey everybody, this is Fooch from Niners Nation, the SB Nation 49ers site.  A few weeks ago Grant was kind enough to give me a little plug as the preseason got underway.  Now that the 49ers regular season will be getting under way, I thought I'd make another mention of the site.

The 49ers haven't been getting a lot of love from the national media, but I think they could surprise some folks.  Of course, riding the arm of J.T. O'Sullivan could make for one crazy ride.  Let's pray for what looks to be an improved defense going forward.

I'm sure many of the commenters at Niners Nation are familiar to the folks at McCovey Chronicles.  Your very own howtheyscored has been promoted to author status as he is putting together a great look at every 49ers season dating back to 1946.  If you've ever wanted to get a little more historical context for 49ers football, a new year is posted every Thursday afternoon.

We'll certainly have the usual open threads and analysis day in and day out.  However, the readers and commenters are what takes it to the next level.  The community at Niners Nation is getting bigger and better every day, so stop on by in what we all hope will be a successful 2008 49ers campaign.

This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

What is this "football?"

And why is it the name of a game in which the ball hardly ever comes in contact with the players’ feet?

Perhaps it should be called “fat guys running into each other and chasing fast black men?”

Brodie threw for the Niners in the Cenozoic era.

Spurrier was his backup , who stepped in one year and tossed some 18 TDs or something.

Spurrier was the player that caused the Niners to kick-shove Brodie towards retirement because they were so deperate to get that Heisman Trophy winning #1 pick into the lineup.

How could it possibly be the money when he was offered 25 million dollars by the Packers not to end his retirement?? He’s basically playing for free. Your mean spiritedness towards my quarterback is forcing me to root for the Niners to go 4-12 this year. Oh wait. They’re going to do that whether I root for them or not!!

What???

I never once said it was the money. I’ve hated Favre pretty deeply for over 10 years. This is well documented across two blogs. His being a Jet has nothing to do with it.

by howtheyscored on Sep 6, 2008 10:52 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Or rather, the events of this offseason have nothing to do with it. To be more accurate, his being a Jet simply makes me want the Jets to lose.

my comment was for Vic, who said “was it the money?” As for your feelings for Brett Favre, that’s fine. I don’t know why you hate him, I never hated him when he was a Packer, but needless to say I like him much more as a Jet!! Give me a break, guys. My baseball team hasn’t won a World Series in my lifetime, my football team hasn’t won since 1969, and my basketball team since 1973. (Knicks) Can one of my team have a nice year?? And I really should get some sympathy from my fellow SF Giants’ fans. We’ve been a fan of the most hated man in all of baseball since 1993. Compared to Bonds, Favre is Mother Theresa!!

Compared to Bonds, Favre plays like Mother Theresa [insert superfluous punctuation here]

Bonds may have been hated, but he was never bad. He never had one season where he was a below average player, let alone back-to-back bad years like Favre had in 2005 & 2006 before he rebounded last year. Even J.T. O’Nobody’s bust-o-riffic backup Alex Smith posted a better completion percentage and rating than Favre the year before last.

Wait wait wait...

As I recall hearing it, Favre wasn’t at all insulted that the Pack tried to buy him off and make him retire by offering him gobs of money. In fact, he actually considered taking the offer. If he was really in it for another season because he loves the game, shouldn’t he have been pissed that the Pack would try to buy him off like that?

I, too, am now rooting against the Jets. However, because the 49ers are going to S-U-C-K Suck suck suck! like they are this year, I’m really not worried about whether or not the Jets are any good.

Not me

I’m going to enjoy the Packers flopping to a 4-12 record though, when they had a Super Bowl contender so readily in their grasp. It will be interesting to see, however, whether Rodgers destroys their season by his craptacular play or by his inability to survive 4 consecutive snaps without getting hurt.

They were on the verge of a SB last year

And Favre threw it away in OT.

It was a good move to get rid of him. Long and short term. Rodgers will be fine I think, but they had to see sooner or later if he was the guy or not.

they have a pretty good defense, decent talent at running back and wide out. I don’t really know what they did with their O-line in the off season, but it seems like if Rogers is half the QB that Favre was they should at least go 7-9.

The ironic thing is that Favre wanted his release so he could sign with the Vikings, and since the Packers’ refused, he was traded to the Jets. Even though you’ll probably deny it, I’m sure you would have changed your opinion if Favre was throwing TD’s for Minnesota this year.

I’m not trying to change your mind on Brett Favre, I’m just pointing out that despite the negative comments about him over here, he’s by far the most popular player in the NFL. He couldn’t be that if he were the “prima donna drama queen” you claim he is.

Brian Sabean's new dad: Firm believer in corporal punishment

by rxmeister on Sep 6, 2008 12:26 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

So because his jersey sales are high he's the most popular?

Maybe it’s because he went to a new team, a team with a large fanbase. People aren’t going to keep buying a new Tom Brady or Peyton Manning jersey each year if they already have one. I think to say Favre is by far the most popular player in the NFL, is a huge stretch.

Or

Frontrunners/bandwagoners buy his jersey because he plays for the most high profile team in the leauge. Real basketball fans, the majority of them don’t love Kobe.

Same is probably said of Favre. They respect him but do they like him enough to buy his jersey? I doubt it. I’m a 49er fan and I have no need for a Brett Favre jersey. Jersey sales are a pretty bad source for trying to figure out a player’s popularity.
