Just my 2 cents on next year and the offseason.

Star-divide

Feel free to rip me apart like usual. BTW, this is not what I think is probable, but just my two cents on what I would do.

The lineup I would like to see next year, is a fairly young one. Here is my starting lineup for opening day:

LF: Lewis
SS: Burriss
1b: Ishikawa
RF: Schierholtz
C: Bengie
CF: Rowand
3B: Pablo
2b: Frandsen
P: Lincecum

This offseason, the Giants should have 1 focus: pitching. Now, most Giants fans would question me in this decision. The Giants have a pretty good staff right now and very few consistent hitters. I think all Giants fans can agree that the Giants need a brand new bullpen, besides Brian Wilson.

C.C. Sabathia has spoken of great interest to be a Giant next year. He wants to be close to home (Vallejo) and he doesn't want to play for the A's, a team that can't afford him. If the Giants can package Jonathan Sanchez, Barry Zito, and Randy Winn for a couple mediocre prospects, along with taking part of Zito's contract, the Giants can easily afford C.C. and have the best pitching trio in baseball.

Starting Rotation:

Lincecum
C.C.
Cain
Lowry
Correia

As well, I think the Giants should go after some relievers like: Kyle Farnsworth, Casey Fossum, and Juan Rincon. As well as signing a few relievers, the Giants need to continue to work with their young talented relievers like Matos, Romo, Sadler, Otero, and Hinshaw.

The 2009 season will be a year of preparation for 2010. We will get to see which of the youngsters pan out and which don't. For the ones that don't pan out, we replace them with free agents the following offseason, especially the position players. In 2010, the following big bats will be available at each position to replace a possible young bust:

1B
Aubrey Huff
Wes Helms

2B
Adam Kennedy
Placido Polanco
Brian Roberts

3B
Adrian Beltre

SS
Miguel Tejada
Bobby Crosby

OF
Rick Ankiel
Jason Bay
Coco Crisp
Carl Crawford
Matt Holliday
Magglio Ordone

As well as the youngsters I mentioned, the Giants should have Buster Posey, Angel Villalona, Nick Noonan, Conor Gillaspie, Madison Bumgarner, and Tim Alderson ready for 2010.

I think if all pans out well with the young players and the Giants can get rid of Zito's contract, or at least part of it, then the Giants will be in contention for NL West, considering the lack of competition in the divison, and primed for a pennant run in 2011.

mostly true

but Aubrey Huff is one of the most underrated hitters playing today.

thats because he plays in Baltimore, and played in Houston and with the Devil Rays…not exactly a tv market in any of the cases

by silentearth36 on Sep 6, 2008 10:03 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

actually, not true.

He’s been awesome this year, but he cannot keep his .313 BABIP that high with a LD% hovering around 17%. He hasn’t been getting any cheap home runs this year, as all of his shots have been over 350 ft, however, I don’t believe he can sustain his performance, and will definitely lose his skills in a lpark like AT&T.

he's no superstar

I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that probably no one wants to trade for Zito.

Roberts?

Don’t we have one of those?

Forgive me my lack of erudite etiquette…but what’s the difference between a Fanpost and a Fanshot? And why are you getting bent when what you perceive as one is placed where you perceive another should be? Does your monitor wink out? Are your in laws insulted? Are you?

Not only can’t you trade Zito, but why would you want to trade Jonathan Sanchez and keep Kevin Correia in your super new rotation for 2009?? Why do you want to hit the FA market heavy in 2010 when you should have all these young players arriving?? The two don’t jibe. The Giants haven’t changed their focus the last couple of years for nothing. They didn’t invest heavily in the draft and international scouting so they can keep signing a bunch of overpriced veteran free agents.

Packaging Sanchez for mediocre prospects?

by Goofus on Sep 6, 2008 8:22 AM PDT   0 recs

I think he meant packaging him with Zito to help? I don’t know. I’m confused.

At least acquiring CC puts Cain in the right spot.

Two more reasons to hate the Zito contract

Not only does paying Zito all that money prevent them from spending that kind of money on another starter, but the Zito contract basically set the market for all pitchers better than Zito is. The bare minimum that Sabathia would except would be about 10 million more than Zito got.

by rxmeister on Sep 6, 2008 10:47 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Maybe it was a plot by Sabean to make all of our starters’ relative value on the trade higher?

If Zito is worth $126 million, just think how valuable a contract like Lowry’s is.

by Goofus on Sep 6, 2008 11:20 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Sabean’s “plot” won’t work so well when Lincecum and Cain go into their free agent year. Maybe he figures he’ll be fired by then anyway.

by rxmeister on Sep 6, 2008 11:44 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I would trade Sanchez for crap only if the other team took Zito’s remaining contract in its entirety. Alas, I don’t think any GM who wants to keep their job would do that trade.

Bonds stands alone.

they would want Lincecum if they took on Zito’s contract, not Sanchez, and a trade like that would remind me of the Horace Stoneham broke years, when he started to sell off his best players.

Why Not Just Sign CC?

We have the dollars even with Zito. If the plan is enough pitching and defense to win with a weak offense would this not accomplish this plan? Run with what we got on offense and in the bullpen and win with a rotation of Lincecum, Sabathia, Cain, Sanchez, and Zito. If Lowry becomes healthy and effective then he joins Correia, Hennessey, and Misch as stariting pitching depth, bullpen help, or trade bait.

by giantsrainman on Sep 6, 2008 12:58 PM PDT   0 recs

Correia is definitely a bullpen arm and I see Lowry starting for a bit to show he has value and then traded for a bat.

by giants9107 on Sep 6, 2008 1:12 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I don’t know about Lowry.

Presuming he is healthy from spring forward ( just for the sake of this discussion) I am not sure a club will be satisfied with "just" 4 months to prove his health. At least satisfied enough to trade anything for him. At this point it might take all of ‘09 just to show he is worthy of 6.25MM team option for ‘10.

by daveinexile on Sep 8, 2008 8:22 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Why not sign CC?? Because he’ll cost 140 million dollars. You say it like it’s an easy thing to make that kind of expenditure. And even if a year or two of CC is in the budget, what do you when you’re paying CC and Zito all that money and the young guys like Lincecum, Cain, Alderson, Bumgarner etc are making more and more money every season, not to mention your young hitters. Something has to give, and when it does it will be bad for the franchise. The Giants should be getting their payroll down now, and spending their money on the draft, international signings, and locking up the good kids that they do have.

want CC

but a franchise crippling move with 2 expensive pitchers. NO

Willie Mays, you ain't kidding

by CB30 on Sep 6, 2008 2:26 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm not sure that's true

They’re massively underbudget from where hey were two years ago and in the meantime, their revenues (along with the industry’s) have increased substantially. The Zito deal was always stupid and will continue o be so for 6 more years, but it’s not as crippling to the team’s financial future as being terrible for six more years would be. CC’s currently one of the game’s dominant players, and getting him would give us probably the sports best two starting pitchers for the next few years. That’s not a bad basis on which to start building a team. And given that much of the rest of the team is going to be dirt cheap, you’ve got that much more flexibility in the high end contracts.

Personally, I agree. I’d rather jump into the CC sweepstakes than anything else in this year’s market.

With 30.5MM committed 2 Player ( He Who Shall Not be Named and Rowan) in 2010. 30.5MM committed to them in 2011. And with again 30.5MM in 2012 I have to disagree with you. The Giants sign a CC or Tex and they will have, at best, no room to add complementary vet in a need position for those years. At Worst the Giants will have purge younger help to meet those commitments.

Best case scenario: I don’t think Either Tex or CC is enough to put this team over the hump. Sure the team will be completive and probably not lose 90 games more then once in those 3 years. But they probably don’t get past the first round either.

Worst Case: Well lets just say it will make the last 3-4 years seem like paradise. Can you say," Spec Richardson"? I thought you could.

.* the link does a little run down of his time of destroying running the Astros before he was inflicted upon us. Just for something different to bitch about.

Bobby Crosby?

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA

Please, Brian Sabean. Trade for him now. Get a leg up on things. I think the A’s will accept a sat-on bag of Doritos in exchange for him.

I can’t imagine signing CC and having any money left over to keep Lincecum.

Zooperstars, they quack me up!

by Goofus on Sep 6, 2008 6:58 PM PDT   0 recs

Can you imagine them keeping Lincecum if he’s spent 6 years on cellar dwellars? I think getting themselves back to competitiveness is step #1 in hoping to keep Timmy around. That said, I’d say basing deals this off-season on things you hope to do 5 years from now is a pretty bad philosophy, bird in the hand-wise.

Get the hell out the way Bengie, Pablito's hit the show!

by Roger on Sep 6, 2008 7:22 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Well, it’s part of my larger belief that the team is more need of bats than more starting pitching.
