A+: San Jose has a bye in the first round of the playoffs
They will face the winner of best-of-three series between Stockton and Modesto. Modesto defeated Stockton 6-5 (10 innings) in game 1 last night.
Notable lines:
Stockton: 3B Chris Carter: 2 for 4, HR, SF, SO
Modesto: RHP Jhoulys Chacin: 5.2 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K--1 HR, 1 BK
The A's' Carter, who 39 HRs were one away from leading all the minor leagues, hit another HR. The Rockies' Chacin, who is the top prospect on the Modesto Nuts after a season in which he had a 2.03 ERA, did not have one of his better starts.
A-: Augusta defeated Asheville 1-0
(in game 1 of the best-of-three series)
Augusta: 1B Angel Villalona: 1 for 3, SO
Augusta: RF James Simmons: 0 for 2, BB, 2 SO
Augusta: LHP Madison Bumgarner: 8.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 10 K--3 PO
Augusta: LHP Andy De La Garza: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 K
Asheville: RHP Connor Graham: 8.0 IP, 1 R, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 10 K--1 E
Villalona had the GreenJackets' only hit, although he was quickly erased on an inning-ending double play when the next batter was called out for interference after striking out. Simmons drew a leadoff walk in the 6th inning and after advancing to third on an error scored on a sac fly.
Just another eight shutout innings for the dominant Bumgarner, who was once again pitching on six days rest. He threw 89 pitches and was almost perfect in that he picked off (on steal attempts) all three batters who reached base against him. He faced just one batter over the minimum because there was a missed catch error on one of the pickoffs. De La Garza had a scoreless 9th inning for the save. Not to be outdone by Bumgarner, Graham, whom the Rockies selected in the fifth round a year ago and had a 2.26 ERA this year, also had 10 K in 8.0 IP. He arguably outpitched Bumgarner, but his own error was ultimately the difference in the score. Total game time was just under two hours.
ssA: Salem-Keizer lost to Vancouver 8-5
(losing their regular season finale but winning their division via a tiebreaker with a 40-36 W-L record)
Salem-Keizer: SS Ehire Adrianza: 2 for 5, SO
Salem-Keizer: 3B Conor Gillaspie: 0 for 2, 3 BB
Salem-Keizer: DH Buster Posey: 3 for 5, 2 2B
Salem-Keizer: RHP Wilbur Bucardo: 3.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K--1 HB
Salem-Keizer: LHP Ryan Verdugo: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K--1 HR
Gillaspie and Posey both reached base three times, surprising me somewhat that they were even in the lineup in a mostly meaningless game. Adrianza was one of three starters in the Volcanoes lineup making his NWL debut after spending the summer in the AZL. The 19-year-old Adrianza was limited to nineteen games this summer due to injury, but hit .288/.382/.409 in 66 AB.
Bucardo had a less than effective start, raising his ERA to 4.57. Verdugo, the Giants' ninth round pick this year, was one of four relievers used by the Volcanoes, two of whom were making their NWL debuts after spending their entire summer in the AZL.
R: Giants won the league championship on Sunday
DSL: Giants at National was postponed by rain
(the second straight day that the opener of the DSL championship series was postponed by rain)

For they year
that makes 18 or 19 total pickoff.
Only one hitter reached second base – and that was because Ciricao dropped the pickoff throw. One LOB.
Pedro Feliz would look great in Dodger Blue.

Anyone else get a phone call from Kevin Pucetas, urging them to come out to Muni and watch the Little Giants defend their title?
That was pretty cool.

Agreed
Adrianza is an interesting kid. Only turned 19 a couple weeks ago, he came from the DSL showing a real knowledge of the strike zone (OBP of .351 to go with .241 as a 17 year old). In his first year in the US, on three different levels (though a pretty small sample size due to a broken foot), he added .040 to the BA, kept the OBP high (.388) tossed in a tiny little peak of power (.409) and impressed the bosses enough with his glove to fill in for a few days at Fresno when they needed a SS (including his much discussed, two-level, one-day, double-header). He’s definitely someone to keep an eye on.

How long has it been since a Giants pitcher has had a lethal pick off move? Rick Reuschel?

Didn’t Jerome Williams have a good pick-off move? He hurt his arm doing it once because it was so weird and awkward.

Wasn’t it that side-arm move? Yeah, that was weird.

Yup, IIRC, it was a drop down side-arm type move.

I remember Shawn Estes as having a really good pickoff move.
Like Barry Zito, I'm mildly half-OK.

Can’t remember whether he picked many off, but pretty much nobody ran on Kirk Rueter.

Jamey Wright
Jamey Wright had the best of recent memory. I sure wish he pitched as well as his pick off move. I liked him as a good character person for the team as well.

He had an excellent first month and was pretty not good the rest of the season. I liked him too so it’s too bad he sucked.

go Modesto Nuts!
I’m rooting for a Giants vs. Nuts Championship series
by FluLikeSymptoms on Sep 4, 2008 5:38 PM PDT 0 recs
It’s fun when the Nuts play in San Jose, although perhaps not so much as when the Nuts were the A’s affiliate.
I’ve seen groups of kids throw peanuts on the ground and smash them with their feet, chanting “STOMP THE NUTS! STOMP THE NUTS!”
