Zito just does'nt get it
I was wondering if Zito was going to go silently into the off season and do his workout routine with Wilson and put a bad season behind him. Nope he had to call Gary Radnich on KNBR and bitch and moan about how fans and media picked on him this year and how much he loves himself.
Zito calls Radnich 5 minutes after the stock market dropped about 700 points when the House rejected the bailout bill. It was about a 25 min interview off the cuff with Radnich handling himself like the pro he is. I almost gagged on my breakfast 3 or 4 times durring the interview on how moronic Zito came off. Zito came off like a guy trying for the part of Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High 2.
Zito just does'nt get it that the fans and media don't think he is evil (his words). He has to realize he cost MaGowan his job and is sucking up like 1/5 of the payroll with his awful two years with the Giants. Fans want a winner and he has let them down. He talked about how he is like Lincecum 7 years ago (Huh!). He blames the baseball structure for his contract and how he earned his 126 mill from the times he spent with the A's. When do the Giants get their return?
Zito has now put a 1000 pound monkey on his back for next year since he says he has righted his ship. What happens next year if he starts 0-4 or 2-6? That monkey just gets bigger every time he opens his mouth. Whoever is giving this guy advice on handling his situation might be dumber than Zito.
I advise Giants fans to check out this interview on KNBR.com and laugh, shake your head and wonder why Zito just does'nt get it.

Nah, but if he’s actually serious in his going on the radio and singing about the “nobody likes me everybody hates me guess I’ll go eat worms” song then I have to ask WTF he’s on. Nobody wants to hear that noise.

Barry Zito had a tRA+ of 91 this year. that means his component stats should have given him an ERA of 9% worse than the average NL (i think) starter in a neutral run environment.

Somewhat OT
but this whole notion that Magowan was forced out by the other Giants owners because of the Zito contract strikes me as, among other things, stupifyingly provincial. Is there anybody in the baseball loving universe outside of SF who doesn’t assume he was forced out by Selig’s office as fallout from the Mitchell Report? I really think we need to stop staring at the trees and check out the forest on this one.

Ok, fine have a link: check way down in the Mitchell Report and Magowan’s Departure section. While they do note Heyman’s article that the timing was related to the Giant’s poor record the last few years, it notes that doesn’t really ring true, and says that rumors had been floating since January that he needed to step down as damage control for the industry.
That’s a lot of the kind of thing I’ve seen the wink wink nudge nudge "no this isn’t about the Mitchell Report, he just wants to spend time with his family’ thing.
Actually doing a quick google search, it looks like the SJ Mercury News made that connection as well explicitly on the day the retirement news broke, as did ESPN.com (further down in the “Mixed Results” graph there’s a quote from ESPN.com with a 5/17 dateline that he got “smacked down by MLB for his refusal to deal with steroid problems.”
And to clarify, I’m not saying anything definitive about how and why Magowan decided to step down, I’m just saying that the perception of those hows and whys on this blog (which are made with just as little inside knowledge as mine) are significantly different from the same perception in the baseball world at large.

How would that work, exactly?
Step me through the mechanics of how a Commissioner “forces out” a team’s owner, other than by banishment or other penalty, as with Marge Schott. How does that work behind the scenes?
A managing general partner can only be removed as such by the other general partners OF THAT TEAM. So they have to vote the incumbent out (or choose not to renew him, if that is how his deal is structured). So you’re saying that Selig… what, hypnotized all the other Giants general partners? Drugged them? Politicked them in such a way that never came out?

He could ask him to step down now or face a protracted and public investigation of the entire front office.
Seems like a perfectly reasonable conspiracy theory to me, and fits a broad definition of “forced out.”

Exactly
He and his allies among the owners (and if I’m not mistaken there are currently 4 owners who were once upon a time his frat brother in college) have some behind the scenes conversations where they tell Peter “the media and Congress are calling for your blood to sate them, but I won’t make you the public scapegoat and fill the headlines everyday with an investigation of you and your club if you decide this is a good time to retire.”
That really doesn’t seem that difficult.
And, really, as SF certainly knows quite well, league commissioners can step in and literally take a team away from an owner — that’s exactly how we got stuck with the York family you might recall.

Sabean's not an owner, he's an employee
He may have legal recourse for unjust termination.
Eliminating both simultaneously would also make the reasons fairly obvious, maybe Selig wants a subtle threat to owners w/o setting the stage for a messy inquisition.

This poster is no stinking conformist
to correct capitalization, or punctuation, for that matter. He finally used a comma ( where’s the guy beating the horse?) in the last paragraph. The funny thing was that he bypassed so many places where a comma was needed, and where he did use one, given the syntax, should have used a semi-colon.
I don’t mean to mean to come off as some sort of anal-retentive twit that insists on perfect English. I make more than enough gramatical errors that I normally don’t say anything about someone else’s grammar. But these posts are just painful to read.
I visit the McCovey Chronicles because the level of writing is, for the most part, top-notch. A lot of the contributors are smart and funny, and I am constantly amazed at how clever some of the posts are. (See; I just ended a sentence in a preposition.)

I am honestly intrigued
To see what Zito shows up in spring training look like. From all accounts, Wilson is one serious fucker when it comes to working out.
Could be a real positive. Zito w/ Wilson’s physique could regain some effectiveness.
On the flip side, Zito could expose Wilson to the starlet boning lifestyle, and the whole situation could go down hill.

Actually Zito wasn't that bad
the last 2 months of the season. His whip was 1.95, 1.56, 1.99, and 1.65 every month through July. In August and September it was 1.29 and 1.28.
It’s an absolutely terrible contract; I think we all agree. But it’s the reality we all have to live with, If he has actually discovered something and can pitch as well next year as he did at the end of this season he can be a very effective 3rd or 4th guy.

There's an old saying in Tennessee
It’s actually in Texas, I’m sure you heard it in Tennessee, it goes ‘fool me once… Shame on… Shame on YOU… You fool me can’t get fooled again!’
We thought the exact same thing at the end of last year. And he went out and did what Barry Zito always does, he pitches piss poor in the first half, then turns it up a notch in the second half. October 1st, 2008 prediction for the 2009 season: Zito will suck in the first half, and look better in the second half.

Ahh, W. He has a gift for the turn of a phrase.
It’s true that the pattern is similar to 2007, but it’s not as extreme as 2008. He wasn’t nearly as bad at any time last year as he was the first part of this year. It was so ugly this year that I hope it is something we never have to see again.
