Farewell Vizquel!
"I hope I can work something out here because I'd really like to retire here,'' he said
Time to tell it goodbye. Vizquel was and is one of my favorite Giants in the past few years. Hope he comes back sometime with a desk or coaching job. Maybe he can really retire a Giant like JT Snow did? I wouldn't mind signing him as a reserve though. Thoughts?

I was lucky enough to be in SD for Ozzie Smith’s first few years in the league. It’s a really tough call as to who was better.
Ozzie was more spectacular with his leaps and dives, but Omar’s grace and smoothness were amazing.
They both made virtually every play imaginable and seldom made mistakes.

I think the tiebreaker is that Omar is the most fashionable man on Earth. That tilts the scales in his favor, imo.

But isn’t that offset by Ozzie Smith’s kid making the “Top 20” on American Idol?
Incidentally, that’s not even the best the kid of a pro athlete has done on that. The gal who won it two years ago is the daughter of former Giants CB Phillipi Sparks.

Omar
Now you have all the time in the world to paint obese women (NSFW).
All kidding aside, Omar was one of the best defensive shortstops I have ever witnessed in my life. I was fortunate to personally thank him for always putting on a show on the field. He really is the most charismatic guy around.

During his four years here, he was my favorite Giant. It was an honor to witness his defensive wizardry and a helluva lot of fun to watch his love for the game and zest for life.
My favorite moment was when he dressed up in San Diego a grounds crew uniform and helped rake the field between innings.

They need a loophole in the rosters to allow 1 player/coach for each team. Would be awesome to have Omar around for another year to teach the kids how to field…as long as it didn’t cost us another $5 mil. Maybe like a tenth of that
by m34josh on Sep 30, 2008 12:34 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Absolutely. I’d love to have Omar as a coach or working in the org in the vein of Felipe Alou. Mentoring young Latino players aside from just coaching them on how to play the game.

Mentoring...
Why just Latino players? I think all young players would benefit from Omar.

Surely they all would. I drew a line from the young Latino players in the org to Omar because he came to the States very young, in a time when it was much more difficult for Latino players to adjust to life in American baseball. Looking up to someone who walked the same path as you’re walking is a world of help.

speaking of managers and coaches
Does anybody know what Matheny is doing now? If he ever decides to coach, I would love to have him back, although the obvious choice for him would be St. Louis, I guess.

On January 24, 2008, it was reported that Matheny would return to the St. Louis Cardinals organization to act as a special adviser for the first two weeks of spring training.

For everything you did as a Giant. And thank you, Omar, for being the first big leaguer I ever interviewed, even if it was just a brief two question thing. It was a proud moment, to call up my dad and tell him I interviewed someone he has heard of.

I was at the game on Sunday...
when Omar left the field, everyone in the park was standing. They would not sit down until he came back out of the dugout for an encore.
When he was signed I, like many others, could not understand why the Giants would sign a 36 yo shortstop. Then I got the chance to see him play. I was very, very wrong. Being a “West Coast” NL Guy I had only seen bits and pieces of his play prior to 2005. Watching him play everday was joy. He made 2005,2006 and 2007 almost tolerable.

Auf Wiedersehen, Omar
While in San Francisco, you set the record for most games played by a shortstop, oldest shortstop recipient of the Gold Glove, and, most prestigious of all, most triples by a Giants middle infielder of Venezuelan origin who owns a kangaroo.
Through these records your name will live on here long after you have gone home to Seattle to update your autobiography – Omar! Part Two: Why I still hate Jose Mesa. I look forward to seeing you inducted onto the Giants Wall of Mediocrity in 2017, where you will be introduced by Rich Aurilia (Giants starting shortstop 1998-2003 and 2009-2022*). Until then, enjoy your retirement making weird, funky music with the Goo Goo Dolls and sweet, sweet music with Kenshin.
*Aurilia will die in a freak cauliflower explosion in June 2018, but despite his death Bochy will keep pencilling him into the lineup. From then until the end of the 2022 season, Aurilia will set the record for most games played by a corpse, ironically breaking the record that Omar set this season. And so the circle of life continues…
